Tybee Island house description
An original Tybee raised cottage brimming with vintage charm, modern conveniences and ocean views. This newest addition to novelist Mary Kay Andrews’ beach cottage collection is named after the beach house in her New York Times bestselling 'Summer Rental'!
NOTE: Dining and living room walls are now painted white as in the attached video; bright, beachy and ready for you to enjoy! Also a new electric fireplace in fall 2013!
Can you remember going to Grandma’s for the summer? Ebbtide is the perfect, quintessential beach house for nostalgia lovers (who also love the beach!) It’s like Grandma’s house at the beach! This vintage circa1932 raised southern-style beach house offers everything you can think of for an unforgettable beach vacation! Whether a family holiday, girlfriends’ getaway or couples’ retreat, Ebbtide will not disappoint! The historic beach house features original board & batten wood paneling and wood ceilings, hardwood floors and all the ambiance you can imagine! Lovingly preserved and restored, this kind of historical, original construction adds a special, memory-making touch that is one-of-a-kind and cannot be reproduced; it is a place you will remember fondly long after you have checked out and returned to “the real world” and one that you will dream about returning to again and again! The wood-paneled walls envelop you in warmth and you can easily imagine how good life was for those who called this place home so many years ago.
The kitchen greets you upon entry with its red & white décor and simple, yet elegant style. All brand-new stainless steel appliances and granite countertops give you all the modern comforts and conveniences and the red & white gingham reminds you of yesteryear!
From the kitchen, you move into the combo dining/living space. An enormous room with a large, rectangular oak dining table with seating for 8 (highchair also provided). Beautiful barn-style vintage-inspired lighting over the dining table and vintage Sunbeam bread store signage and bookshelf chocked full of books and games for all ages complete the dining space.
Buffet table adjacent to the dining table between dining area and living room provides ample space for serving large meals!
The living room features original wood paneling, large, comfy, slipcovered sofa, 4 cozy side chairs, large round coffee table, a beautiful brick fireplace/hearth (with an electric fireplace box) and new flatscreen TV.
Beautiful antique furniture pieces mingle with new pieces in a perfect mix of today and yesterday!
Behind the living room wall to the left is the master suite with king-size bed, luxurious bedding, ensuite bath with vintage black & white tile and claw-foot tub – a complete luxury master suite!
On the other side of the house, on either side of the fireplace, doors open into the hallway leading to the 3 other bedrooms on this level as well as the full bath between the bedrooms. On the right, there is a bedroom with two twin beds and through that room another bedroom with queen bed. This bedroom features a flatscreen TV and French doors leading out to the enormous covered porch and another complete sitting/dining area with slipcovered sofa, vintage rattan chairs, flatscreen TV, table and chairs for dining or games (seating for 6) and yet another sitting area out here with a rattan sofa & loveseat and 2 chairs done up in beautiful beachy blue stripe. This enclosed porch is surrounded on all sides by windows and sliding glass doors with views to the beach and access to the balcony. There is also access to this covered porch through French doors out of the living room.
Back in the hallway, there is a full bath and then to the left the 4th bedroom with queen bed. Beautiful iron bed and wonderful comfy bedding. These bedrooms feature sinks in the bedrooms; a quaint vintage touch that has been left for guests to enjoy!
Door from enclosed porch leads to outside side porch/deck and staircase.
On the ground level, there are 2 additional bedrooms; one with queen bed and one with two twin beds. There is a full bath with shower downstairs as well as a second shower; perfect for taking a “beach shower” and getting all the salty water and sand off before heading inside!
NOTE: There is no access to the downstairs bedrooms from the main floor without going outside and down the stairs. These are completely separate from main floor of the house and would not be suitable for children. Rooms open into covered parking area.
There is covered parking for 4.
Laundry room is on ground level.
You will absolutely love this house! You will love how close you are to the beach and you will love taking the crossover bridge directly from the house over the sand dunes and to the ocean’s waves!
Features 6 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms (one bathroom is downstairs for access from outside.) Located at #1 9th Street, just steps to the ocean. Within walking distance of great restaurants and shopping!

Old Friends Visit Ebbtide on Tybee
We had such a wonderful time at Ebbtide on Tybee. There is plenty of room there even with 6 ladies! Most of us had not seen each other in many years and spent a lot of time visiting inside this beach house. It is beautifully decorated with the important areas (kitchen and baths) being fully updated and comfortable. This beach house has been restored but keeps its original look and feel. The Mermaids make sure everything is just right.

Ebbtide is a Winner!Guest comment entered by manager
Ebbtide is a Winner!
This wonderful beach house allowed everyone in our extended family room to sleep, play, eat, relax, without being on top of each other. The interiors are skillfully decorated by MKA. Love the red and blue color scheme and all the personal touches. The kitchen is wonderful. (But you DO need that step ladder -- cabinets are very tall. It might be a good idea to provide one a little more functional that the darling vintage step/stool, though not as charming.) Open to the dining/family room and yet not so much so that you feel you're staring at the mess you just created! Love the porch. Love the short walk to the beach (esp w a gaggle of toddlers). Love the space to keep all the beach toys outside but protected. Love the parking for three vehicles. Don't love the mosquitoes, but who does? We enjoyed a wonderful week and look forward to renting Ebb Tide again and again in the future. Thanks!

We are coming back soon!Guest comment entered by manager
We are coming back soon!
We had the most wonderful time at Tybee, my husband, our adult children and spouses , and grandchildren - spent four nites at Ebbtide - we left with regrets Labor Day morning. The house is wonderful - homey - cheerful - spacious - touches you will not find in a condo or hotel. We were 12 in number, and had more that enough room to watch the Bull Dogs - read some of the wonderful books in the house - play games - or spend time playing a ukelele as my grandaughter did ! The location was great - wooden walkway to the beach right out the front door ! We made plans to come back on Memorial Day - but you guessed it - it has already been reserved ! Rather than find a different location - we will most likely pick another date. Mermaids are wonderful where-ever you find them - but the most wonderful of all are on Tybee Island Ga. Many thanks to all of you,and also to the owner of Ebbtide - how very gracious of you to share ! Love - love - loved it !

The best beach rental we have ever hadGuest comment entered by manager
The best beach rental we have ever had
This home is by far the BEST beach rental we have ever had. The decor, location, cleanliness, etc was all top notch. Everyone also commented on the beds....they were SOOOO comfortable. There was absolutely nothing that we needed that the house did not provide. The close proximity to the beach was an added plus. When we arrived we realized we had a key that did not work. I text the number that was provided and within minutes I had a replay back from Erin...and this was about 8pm on a Sunday night! By Monday morning, Erin brought by an additional key and along with providing that key she was sincere in asking if there was anything else she could do for us. Her attitude was fantastic. We even got to know the gentleman next door with the macaw bird! So friendly! This was my first time at Tybee Island but it will definitely not be my last. We were so impressed with the small-town feel of the island, the friendliness of the people....and this house! I cannot say enough about the great time we had. We will be back...to this house!!!

Great Beach House!Guest comment entered by manager
Great Beach House!
I rented out Ebbtide for a recent girl's trip (8 women) and it was fantastic! It was much larger than we expected - we each had our own bed and never felt cramped. We loved that there were so many places to hang out. There's one seating area in the living room, two on the enclosed porch, one area on the outside deck and then a lower patio that we didn't get a chance to use. Everything was really nice and very well done, and the decor was precious. Vintage beach theme throughout the house. The beds were very comfortable, and the bathrooms were nice. The kitchen was well equipped with everything we needed, and everything is brand new. Overall just a wonderful beach house for a large group. I can't wait to go back and stay there again!

Year Purchased: 2012
About: Hi! I’m Mary Kay Andrews, the owner of Ebbtide. My husband and I also own The Breeze Inn on Tybee. We purchased Ebbtide in December of 2012 because we were looking for a larger vacation home to accommodate all three generations of our family. I am the New York Times best-selling author of twenty novels, including Spring Fever and Summer Rental. Ebbtide is named after a fictional beach house in Summer Rental. We believe we are only the third owners in the home’s history. We were drawn to Ebbtide because of its location—only one house off the beach on quiet 9th Street, and because of its many period-perfect details, like original board and batten walls. With two small grand-children, the house gives us plenty of space and privacy.
Why Tybee Island:
The home’s proximity to the beach means we can sip coffee on the covered front deck and watch the sunrise over the Atlantic. Mid-day, we can watch huge freighters in the ship channel, coming and going to the port of Savannah, or shrimp-boats dragging their nets. In the evening, we can enjoy Technicolor sunsets from another deck. The mid-island location of Ebbtide means we are just a short walk away from restaurants and shops, as well as Tybee’s only grocery, The IGA-Tybee Market If the weather is less than perfect, the grand-children have plenty of space to play on the upstairs enclosed porch—which is big enough to accommodate the two-year-old’s tricycle, or downstairs, in the covered open-air porch where we grill hot-dogs and hamburgers. Because we love to cook and entertain, we completely gutted the existing kitchen, enlarging the space and installing custom cabinetry and state-of-the-art stainless steel appliances including a gas range plus electric/convection wall oven and granite countertops. We furnished the house with a mixture of some of the original antique pieces that conveyed with the house, plus family friendly and vintage pieces I gather at estate sales and junk shops around the Southeast.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
We furnished the house with a mixture of some of the original antique pieces that conveyed with the house, plus family friendly and vintage pieces I gather at estate sales and junk shops around the Southeast. Everything in the house was selected with the comfort and convenience of our family as well as our guests. Deep-cushioned slip-covered sofas and chairs and multiple seating and dining areas inside and outside are meant to allow family members to gather and relax after a long day at the beach, or biking or strolling around Tybee. We also love bringing other couples to Ebbtide for weekends. The bedroom set-up, which includes a master suite with king-sized bed and bath, plus two other upstairs bedrooms with queen-size beds, as well as a downstairs queen-sized bedroom, means nobody has to bunk on a sofa! Ebbtide is designed for family time, fun-time, quiet time, dream time. You’ll never sleep any better than here, with the sound of the surf whispering in your ears!
