Casa Sisal is located in the Mayan village of Sac Chich, 35 minutes from the city of Merida, but worlds away. Relax in the privacy of this contemporary home. Casa Sisal is adjacent to Hacienda Sac Chich, Casa de Maquinas ( VRBO # 202866) .

Surrounded by water lily reflecting ponds and a large green lawn this 2000 square foot home is built within the 2 acre henequen drying fields of the hacienda and is enclosed by the haciendas original 10-foot wall, creating its own private world.

Casa Sisal has 2 BEDROOMS (ONE KING AND TWO QUEENS), 2 BATHS, FULL KITCHEN, LIVING AREA AND DINING FOR 8. Walk out of the living area on one side you'll find a patio with a 30 foot lily pond and out the other side is a beautiful 3-sided infinity edge SWIMMING POOL, palapa and patio.

The sunken living room has a large couch, fireplace, flat screen monitor for viewing DVD’s and the home is wired for sound and i-pod ready. This home is constructed of hard woods, limestone and plaster polished to a sleek finish by the ancient Mayan technique called chukum. EACH WINDOW IS SCREENED, EVERY ROOM HAS FANS AND THE HOUSE IS FULLY AIR-CONDITIONED. The ceiling and door heights are 10 feet giving every room a sense of great space. The house is lit very dramatically and on the lawn there are 2 rows of 9 royal palms that at night seem to be suspended in space.

The great lawn in front of the house is 2 acres and is a perfect place for playing frisbee, soccer or volleyball. The sky at night can be viewed while lounging on the chaise lounge by the pool or in the back or even while dining inside the house. Designed to experience the beauty of the Yucatan light and sky you will find Casa Sisal a respite from it all.

Casa Sisal is just outside of the town Acanceh, 10 minutes from the Cancun/Merida highway 180 where you can drive to Chichen Itza ( 45 minutes), Izamal (40 minutes), Progresso (45 minutes) and is exactly a 3 hour drive to Cancun. We are 5 minutes from the Convent Route which is the road to not only many of the Convents (Tecoh, Muni, Mani, Ticul) but the Mayan Site of Mayapan( 20 Min), Loltun Caves ( 1 hour). Uxmal is also 1 hour away. We are also close to many cenotes where you can swim in crystal clear water . The Cuzama cenotes are 25 minutes away.

This house shares the private entrance to the Hacienda Sac Chich ( VRBO # 202866) and has its own winding driveway that leads to a private entrance and parking area.

There is a housekeeping staff to wash dishes, do laundry, clean daily and change linens on beds every three days.

We really enjoyed our stay at Casa Sisal a couple of weeks ago. The house is absolutely stunning and very comfortable with all you could want. Only wish we had stayed longer than 3 nights..!

Sometimes pictures make things look better than they are in reality (working myself in marketing, have seen this dozens of times). But even the pictures of Casa Sisal are extremely beautiful they don't compare with the reality of being there, nothing but silence, "private" garden larger than a football field just for you and the home made Yucatecan food from the lovely ladies of the Hacienda Sac Chich staff. I still wonder why people would prefer a five star hotel to a private residence? Probably because they haven't experience this. Great for a romantic scape or to enjoy your family by the pool. Can't wait to go back again to Casa Sisal.

Cyndy, we are back in Minnesota from our wonderful stay at your property. You and your husband have really created a special place there. I see what you mean, once you arrive you really never want to leave. Being in Real Estate I have the luxury of seeing some amazing properties, but yours is one of a kind. I can tell you we stayed at a fairly high end resort in Playa del carmen costing twice as much a day and the finishes in your place surpassed the hotel by far.

My wife and I flew into Cancun from Milwaukee. After meeting our son, his wife, and their thirteen month old son at the airport (they flew in from New York City), we rented a car. The three hour drive via the toll road was pleasant and there was only light traffic. We stopped at a toll road service area for cappuccino and a rest room break. The coffee shop was called "Italian Coffee" and was similar to Starbucks. Casa Sisal is stunning! The pictures and owner's description are very detailed and accurate. Having said that, it was even nicer in person than we expected. We swam in the pool every day and enjoyed the two acre yard for Frisbee, etc. The staff was very helpful. We arrived to chips and homemade salsa as well as freshly baked banana bread. The house is large and well equipped. Everything that we needed was there for us. They even provided a "porta-play" type crib for the baby. The house served as a unique place to hang out as well as a base for nearby sights and activities. Within a 30 to 60 minute drive there are many Mayan ruins, cenotes, haciendas, convents and historic towns. We went to Merida (we liked Paseo Montejo which is a beautiful boulevard with old mansions); Cuzama Cenote (sadly we only had time to see and swim in one of the three cenotes there); the seaside town of Progreso (disappointing compared to Playa Del Carmen or Tulum); the nearby Hacienda Teya (we had a very nice lunch). We were only able to stay 3 nights at Casa Sisal and wish we could have stayed longer.

Casa Sisal is a wonderful place to spend a week of your life. For my wife and me, it was as if we had been transported into an exotic world, clearly connected to today but also steeped in the history by which the Hacienda Sac Chich found its way to this time and place. It is more luxurious than any hotel suite at ten times the price, and comes with a well-stocked kitchen and staff. Nonetheless, if you are the all-inclusive hotel type, this place is probably not for you. The accommodations at both the Casa Principal and at Casa Sisal express a quiet tastefulness that combines a sense of high luxury without making the error of overstatement. Attention was paid to combining the modern comforts we all seek with a feel for the past. While the Casa Principal consists of restored historic structures in a most pleasant way, Casa Sisal, newly constructed, rose out of the grounds and ruins combining ancient Mayan building techniques with almost a Frank Lloyd Wright sense of style… We liked the results so much that we took our hosts up on an offer to obtain a copy of the book dedicated to its construction. Speaking of our hosts, if you are so lucky as to run into Cindy and Howie during your stay, you will encounter hosts that made us feel like longtime friends.

My husband and I spent a wonderful 9 nights at Casa Sisal earlier this month. We are design and architecture enthusiasts, and the house exceeded our expectations with the attention to detail and thoughtful touches. It was a delight to wake up each morning in such a beautiful setting. Late afternoons were often spent enjoying the pool and seeing the sky darken over the beautiful grounds. Our day trips included visits to Merida (including a Wednesday morning house and garden tour), Chichen Itza, Mayapan, Uxmal, a local cenote, Hacienda Temozon for a lovely brunch, Hacienda Yaxcopoil, Hacienda Ochil for an early dinner, Hacienda Xcanatun for an amazing dinner at Casa de Piedra, the charming Izamal where we enjoyed a carriage ride, and Vallodolid, among others. Bartola and her sister Soco were very helpful and unintrusive. Cyndy and Howard’s notes and suggestions were great in planning our trip and daily outings.

                  Owner info

                  Year Purchased: 2006

About the owner: Being frequent visitors to the Pacific beaches and colonial central Mexico since the 70's we read about the restored haciendas of the Yucatan. In 2001 we went on the first of many "hacienda hopping" trips to the Yucatan. The grandeur, architectural scale, historical and economic relevance and process of restoration of these haciendas intrigued us and soon we were researching haciendas for sale on the internet. It wasn't until we rented a Hacienda for my 50th Birthday in 2003 that we experienced a sense of ownership while entertaining friends and family there. On that trip we toured hacienda Sac Chich, shortly thereafter made an offer and 5 months later it was ours. Sac Chich was the first and only hacienda we looked at for sale. In 2006 we purchased the drying field lands and in 2008 we began construction on Casa Sisal. This is Sac Chich 2010 with architecture in a modern vernacular. Casa Sisal opens itself up to the magnificent sky and light of the Yucatan. It is comfortable, magical and serene. We always knew we would someday have a home in Mexico, but always envisioned the Pacific coast or colonial interior. The Yucatan became the pure isolated uncomplicated Mexico that we remembered from travels 30 years ago.

                  Why the Owner Chose Merida:
Being at Sac Chich is our opportunity to stop. We are surrounded by such tropical lushness and architectural grandness that sometimes you find yourself just sitting taking it all in. The simple sounds of the village children playing or a dog barking mingles with the bamboo swaying and clacking in the wind or the amazing birds that sing all day. We relax and enjoy the people we are with, swim, read a book, nap in a hammock, bird watch, play pool games, volleyball, frisbee, card games, charades, enjoy music, dine by candlelight. We are always hopping in the car to explore and discover. We go to Mayan ruins, cenotes to snorkel and swim, nearby haciendas to just see or relax and have lunch or dinner on their patios, go to the beach and eat seafood in Progresso or Celestun, visit Merida for tacos at our favorite taco stands, visit the early weekend market downtown Merida or enjoy one of the many cultural events that take place all week long there. Sometimes we just get in the car and drive and head down a road towards a village we have never been and stop in a tortilleria to get a stack of fresh tortillas. We always find smiling and curious Mayan people, giggling children and if we're lucky there is a tienda next door with very cold Mexican Coke in a glass bottle for us to enjoy! It is the simple pleasures of being at the hacienda that gives us the greatest joy!
