Not one of the TV's worked, No wireless cable or internet connection, no soap or shampoo was supplied and the beds were not made. I called the owner for assistance and he was no help. He said he would call me back and never did. I followed up the next morning via text and they again told me to call Charter to fix the issue. This is unacceptable and due to the lack of concern and unready home for rent I would not recommend renting this house.

Owner response: I am sorry you did not find your overall experience at Black Bear retreat a positive one. We do what we can, even on short notice, to solve any issues that arise. The other guests who have stayed in my home can attest to that. The home was completely ready for your 2 night rental. My housekeeper confirmed that there was sufficient soap in the home perhaps the soap was moved? I did not know that the beds “were not made” It is custom in Black Mountain to leave the clean linens on the bed. When I travel to a vacation home as compared to a hotel, I usually bring toiletries with me just in case. You never told us that about this before this review; Nor did you complain about the home in anyway except to say that you could not get the cable TV to work. I walked you through troubleshooting the cable TV the best I could over the phone for over 20 minutes while I was in the middle of traveling with my family during the Veteran’s day holiday. I could not determine over the phone if it was a cable company issue or your inability to navigate the TV controls. The quickest way and really the best way to help solve your Cable/internet problem was to recommend that you call charter directly to see if there are cable connection issues that they could resolve. I could not call them for you as you need to be troubleshooting in front of the TV. Calling them would definitely have solved the internet issue as I have cable modem install. I gave you the information you needed to call them. I confirmed that you never did call them. Information on how to use all TV’s and how to reset the cable modem was also available in the guest book. I never heard back from you after your text. I assumed at that point the issue was resolved. My housekeeper confirmed that the settings on the TV were off but by following the written instructions she was able to get cable in the downstairs TV like prior guests had been able to do. If you would like to talk further about your stay at our home please do not hesitate to contact me.
2 couples spent a wonderful week in the Black Bear home. It was everything it claimed to be. A spacious upstairs bedroom/full bath for one couple, downstairs owner suite for the other. The door at the bottom of the stairs is good, it kept the early downstairs risers from waking the later sleeping upstairs couple.(Handicapped persons might find the stairs difficult, but the door can close it off for climbing toddlers) The sunroom was wonderful, cozy for the girls for reading, while the guys watched the big screen TV in the living room. We spent most evenings in the sunroom, going over the days activities and planning the next days outings. The garage option was nice as we could drive in each evening. The long and winding road to the house is paved and well-lit. We didn't use the back porch, but enjoyed being up in the trees with the beautiful changing leaf colors. It is a short 5 minute drive to the quaint shops downtown or to walk around Lake Tomahawk. This is a great location for getting groceries at Ingles, gas stations and getting on I40. We loved eating at My Fathers Pizza, Phil's BBQ, and some hot chili at Wendys on a cold night. We went to Biltmore house, drove on the Blue Ridge Pkwy, went to Chimney Rock and Lake Lure, spent a day In Asheville with lunch at Packs Tavern - great food! While there, don't miss Mast General Store. Be sure you visit the Farmers Market on the way home, it's a fun place to explore. The only thing we couldn't figure out was how to turn off the light above the kitchen sink. We will definitely be back to Black Mountain and we have recommended this home to several friends. Thank you Ed for sharing your lovely home, it had everything we needed for a wonderful vacation.

Black Bear Retreat
Black Bear Retreat
We spent the summer at Black Bear Retreat and were extremely pleased with the house and the area. The house was clean, comfortable and nicely decorated...felt more like home than a rental. Since the house is surrounded by trees and the only home on that cul-de-sac,it is secluded, quiet and private. The quaint, charming town of Black Mountain, only five miles away, has everything needed for everyday living. Close by Asheville has great restaurants and amazing "must see" sites...like the Biltmore Estate,Chimney Rock,Pisgah Mountain and the Grove Park Inn.God willing,we will return next summer, taking our excursions farther north on the Blue Ridge Parkway to Grand Father Mountain and the towns of Boone and Blowing Rock. Another plus...the owner was always available to answer any questions and we thank you,Ed and your family, for a most memorable and enjoyable summer.

We recently spent 4 nights here and had a great get-away. The house had everything we needed and was in a great location with a great community lake less than a 5 min drive away. Black Mountain has a great downtown area is perfect for a nice weekend away. I would recommend this house to anyone wanting a great mountain get away.

Location of this house is fantastic, lots of woods and privacy; plenty of space for two couples. We found the property lacking in some of the amenities mentioned in the description. The beds were not made upon arrival; Wifi did not work during our entire stay, contacted owner and local cable company, cable technician needed to visit property, but we did not wish to be tied down for the visit; There were two coffee makers and neither worked; I contacted the owner with this list of issues. If these issues are remedied, I would highly recommend the property. Again, we enjoyed our stay, were just disappointed with the aforementioned issues.

Owner response: Thank you for you review. I appreciate your concerns about the cable TV and coffee maker. I addressed these issues with you during your stay. If you would have had more time, these matters would have been taken care of during your stay. Good news is that the cable company has made the necessary repairs and installed an upgraded cable package and modem. Hopefully no more issues there. The broken coffee maker, that was new, has been replaced. Some guests prefer the bed made others prefer the bed linens on the bed so they know they have been cleaned. I will check with my house cleaner to make sure that all is in order. I am glad that otherwise the home met all of your needs. I hope you will be back soon so that we can give you an even better experience.

This is a wonderful place to stay while in the Black Mountain area. When we drove into the garage, we already felt like we were home. The house is comfortable and inviting. It had everything we needed for our month long stay. The bed was so comfortable we wanted to bring it home with us! The kitchen and bathrooms were well equipped and the deck and sunroom became our favorite places to relax. The area is quiet and secluded yet close to shopping, restaurants and grocery stores. We have found the house we will rent every time we visit Black Mountain. Thank you Ed for making it all so easy.

A pleasant place to stay
A pleasant place to stay
The property was very nice (2-4 people) and the location was close to Black Mountain yet far enough out to be quiet. Also, very close to Lake Tomahawk for casual hiking. Black Mountain has a nice assortment of shops and dining and Asheville is only 20 minutes away. Pros: Good jump off point for hiking Location - leaf season would be spectacular. Mountain views in the winter. Shopping and dining Cons: Kitchen and dining utensils need upgrade. Linens need replacing (towels and sheets) Cable - advertised as "basic". I took that to mean no premium channels. It truly means BASIC - no ESPN, Discovery, A&E, History etc. Pretty much the main network channels and some local ones.

Owner response: Thank you Brian for your comments. We agree that it is time for upgrades and will be providing same. As far as basic cable is concerned, cable prices have become almost prohibitive and many of our guest are happy with streaming netflix or watching DVD's. However, I am looking into upgrading to a better tv package with directv. I hope you will join us again soon. I agree that leaf season is the best time of year for Black Bear. Please return and experience it yourself!

My husband and I rented this home with my husband's father. We were in the area for a 90th birthday party. The home was excellent! We truly enjoyed bringing our dog! If we are in the area again, we will rent it again. It was in an great location; not far from town at all. Loved the spacious kitchen! The views were awesome! It was great to sit back, relax and enjoy God's beautiful creation! We truly enjoyed our stay!

Black Bear Retreat is a beautiful, large home with a great natural view from the many windows, especially in the sunroom. The beds were very comfy and kitchen spacious (big fridge too!). We liked being able to pull into the garage when it was pouring down rain at our arrival. Having a grill to cook on was very useful as well. The owner was quick to respond to any questions or concerns via email or phone. The only reason why I didn't rate it 'excellent' was the lack of good cookware (pans need replacing and knives need to be sharpened) and an awkward dishwasher....nothing to keep me from returning!
