This home provides a cool respite from the summer's intense heat, or a cozy place to 'hole up' by the fire during winter storms. Located at an elevation of 7100 feet in the Sandia Mountains. It is just off The Turquoise Trail, a National Scenic Byway that traverses the back country between Albuquerque and Santa Fe. On it you'll travel through the old historic mining towns Golden, Madrid, and Cerrillos where you can find art, crafts, theater, music, museums and more. The name comes from the blue-green turquoise first mined by the early Pueblo people and now nationally recognized as a precious stone that is typically set in silver. In fact, turquoise mined here found its way to the crown jewels of Spain.

You'll also pass by the Ortiz Mountains Educational Preserve, a 1,350-acre Open Space Preserve managed by Santa Fe Botanical Garden. Like horseback riding? Try the Broken Saddle Riding Company in the Cerrillos hills; trot along Miner's Trail to Devil's Canyon and Cash Entry Mine while enjoying breathtaking vistas of the wondrous New Mexico landscape. Or drive 14 miles to the top of the Sandia Mountains (elevation 10,760 ft) for a spectacular view of the Rio Grande Valley and far away mesas. There is so much to do and see in every direction and you can use this home as a launch pad for your day trips.

The home sleeps six with a hide-a-bed sofa, or seven using the single-bed futon mattress on a sturdy 40'-wide cot. There's also a crib-size mattress for toddlers/babies. The living room is large and comfortable and the SPACIOUS KITCHEN offers all the amenities and cooking utensils. Towels, extra sheets and blankets are provided. A large wood stove (as an alternative to the electric heat) will radiate a comfortable warmth during the winter months; firewood is provided. The two-car car port provides shelter for your vehicle(s) during the winter months. There are two large redwood decks; one is covered providing a shady, cool and private respite among the surrounding pinon pines.

A HOT TUB is provided to help you recover from your sports-related injuries, or just to relax under the night sky. This is great both in winter and in summer and it's right outside the back door in a setting that is private, bounded on the sides by trees and above by the fabulous New Mexico night sky. The back deck also has wooden deck furniture (table with umbrella and chairs) and a large barbeque gas grill for evening cook-outs.

The location of this home is perfect - situated in the Sandia Mountains 12 miles east of Albuquerque, 35 minutes from the airport and less than an hour from Santa Fe. Providing a relaxing, getaway, it's less than 2 miles to grocery, gas, galleries and restaurants, 10 minutes to hiking in the Cibola National Forest or to the nationally-acclaimed Paa-Ko Ridge Golf Course, and 20 minutes to the ski area or to the city. It's quaint, homey, and private with attractions in every direction. A great place for your family members and friends to stay during Thanksgiving, Christmas, Balloon Fiesta, Spring Break, the State Fair or your summer vacation. If you need more detailed information or wish to inquire about a longer-term stay, please contact me by using the 'email owner' form at right.

P.S.(Like to work on your ... 'vacation' ? No need to hassle with or risk bringing your laptop with you - a computer is provided for your convenience, loaded with common software applications such as Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Power Point, Access, Publisher, Outlook) , Open Office Suite, Google Earth, Skype and more, and of course, internet access.) Also, don't want to lug those golf clubs on the plane? I have 3 sets of golf clubs available free for your use.

READ THIS: Reservation Process: check availability by clicking the View Calendar button at upper right. Then, using the Email Owner dialog at right, fill in the text fields and inquire about anything else and submit. You will receive the Rental Agreement along with a complete layout of the costs via email for the period you requested. You can then review that and, if you decide to rent it, follow the instructions on making the confirmation payment in order to reserve those dates and have them shown as unavailable on the calendar. Calling is fine, but use the Email Owner dialog also so I can retrieve the information from anywhere and won't lose it.

We very much enjoyed our stay at this cute mountain home. It is fully furnished with everything you need. It was handy to have a washer and dryer and, though we didn't cook while we were there, we certainly could have! The hot tub was a nice extra! The pull-out bed in the living room wasn't very comfortable, but we just used the mattress on the floor for the kids and that worked great. There are two bedrooms and one and a half bathrooms, plenty of room for our group - two adults, two kids and a baby. Looking forward to staying there again the next time we visit the area!

The home was clean and comfortable and nearby many outdoor sites, activities, groceries and a decent retaurant. The various amentities - hot tub, grill, wood stove, etc., were all present as described. The owner was responsive and helpful, both by phone and email. My colleagues and I would probably not recommend this home to friends, however, for the following reasons: As folks who love to cook and enjoy good food and wine, we found the quality and variety of cooking tools and untensils insufficient for many tasks. The level of (hard water) mineral depsosit son all dishes, flatware, glassware and cookware was frankly alarming- for example, all the (originally clear) glassware was white. Although part-way up the "back side" of Sandia Peak amidst attractive scenery, there was virtually no mountain view from this particlar home/lot. Hot water had to be conserved. One could not take a shower and run the dishwasher at the same time, for example. All in all, it served its purpose as temporary lodging near Albuquerque by we would be unlikely to return.

Owner response: The place is not perfect, but I am baffled at some of the criticism. After reading this I pulled out everything in the kitchen to do an inventory and take pictures. I removed a few items that were substandard quality but those that remain include four fry pans (two Teflon, a Caphelon pan & cast iron), two smaller fry pans with lids, 3 Magnelite pots with lids, a large rectangular baking pan, stoneware pan, two Crock pots, an electric vegetable steamer / rice cooker, an electric sandwich press, two waffle irons, two blenders (one is Cusinart), an electric juicer, a small Cusinart food processor, a toaster, a toaster oven, a microwave, a coffee bean grinder, a Krups 12 cup coffee maker, two tea pots, 3 large mixing bowls, a hand blender, lots of silverware, Chicago cutlery, wooden spoons, 2 spatulas, a ladle, measuring cups, a cheese cutter and slicer, wine openers, etc. The refrigerator is a very nice, large, side-by-side, with ice maker. I thought I had most things covered - not sure what I am missing. I noticed that a bunch of dishes have "gone missing" and those I will have to replace. There's even a set of China and nice table cloth for Thanksgiving or Christmas dinners. There's plenty of glassware, coffee cups and wine glasses. The white coating on the glass was due to a problem with the softener. It's unfortunate I did not catch it (or be informed by the cleaning staff). But that has been rectified and it now all looks new. It's too bad the renter didn't simply leave me a note (or call or text me) detailing the issues they were having instead of hurting my business by writing a poor review. Because I live nearby, I can attend to problems readily. Concerning the lack of a mountain view, the house is surrounded by trees and is more private - the webpage does not advertize mountain views. I lived in this house for 10 years and never had a problem with showering and running the dishwasher at the same time and no one else has ever complained of that; this I will have to investigate. The bottom line is I try to provide a usable and comfortable living environment for a reasonable cost and continually make improvements. For example, I bought a bunch of nice new towels, but unfortunately, a guest poured Chlorox directly on them in the washer so that now they look old and used when in fact they are not. The profit margin on an enterprise like this is not what you might imagine it to be.

This was a great location, we used it as a launching pad for day trips all over central and northern New Mexico. We loved the scenery, the energy and the warm cozy fires as we watched it snow. We relaxed in the hot tub, built a few puzzles, played a few games and ate at Cedar Crust pizza (we managed to go on a night that Jimbo was playing it was awesome if you like classic rock). The beds were comfy and we had enough linens and cooking ware - it was just like being in our home - plus the natural beauty. We even had a person who was in our group who was worried about being away from "a city" - she was glad that it only took 11 minutes to get to the nearest Starbucks! Would stay here again and again!

We would rent this house again. My wife, child, and our three dogs had a very comfortable stay. The owner was very easy to communicate with and proactive in warning us of a snow storm expected on the day of our arrival, advising us to get there a couple of hours earlier so we could get there and unload our stuff before the bad weather hit. He even lit the fireplace and got it all warm and cozy just before we arrived. The place is about a 5 minute drive from NM-536, which leads to the Sandia Park Ski Area, and about 5 minutes the other direction to groceries, restaurants, bars, shopping. The photos are accurate. The place was very clean and well-mantained. I recommend this rental.

My husband and our 2 Beagles stayed in this charming house for 2 weeks and thoroughly enjoyed it. The location is great! Just a short drive back down I-40 to Albuquerque and also a short drive north to Santa Fe. Lots of tourist attractions in Albuquerque. Really enjoyed the Unser racing museum and the archaeological museum which is very near the house. Our dogs loved the fenced in yard. All the amenities were great - kitchen, deck, hot tub, outdoor grill - and the beds were very comfy. Lots of golf courses to choose from. Not much on the TV as no cable or satellite but plenty of reading material and DVDs. We hope to return again next summer!

My family had been planning a vacation to the Albuquerque/Santa Fe area for about six months and after pricing hotels in the area decided to look for a vacation rental. We located this house in the perfect location at a rate LOWER than reasonable hotels for the four adults and two children. The house was extremely clean upon arrival and is larger than it appears in the photographs for a two bedroom house. The kitchen is stocked with spices, cooking utensils and dishes. One night we had a group of 10 adults together for dinner with plenty of space remaining. There were plenty of linens for those staying in the house and comfortable living areas. The memory foam bed was awesome. A significant library and movie collection let us relax indoors when we wanted to. We grilled outside several nights under the stars and took advantage of the hot tub once it cooled down. We drove daily to Moriarty which is about 30 miles east. Going into Albuquerque is a quick 15 mile drive west to near Kirtland AFB where there are plenty of restaurants and shopping opportunities. For the more ecelctic, try going to Madrid for lunch and turqoise hunting - about 30 miles north.

Our family felt very comfortable and welcome in this home during our stay in spring 2011. The large, warm kitchen is well-equipped with thoughtful touches such as basic spices available for use in recipes. Star gazing from the hot tub on the private deck at night is a great way to end the day. For runners, the roads surrounding the property form a nearly perfect one-mile loop, and at 7,000 plus feet, is a challenge for those accustomed to lower elevations. Beautiful scenery, private and situated in a friendly mountain community just minutes from all the amenities of the nearby city of Albuquerque. Very comfortable for our family of three adults and a dog. The owner is local and quickly responds to any inquiries. He has stocked the home with an assortment of local guides and periodicals for familiarizing oneself with sites of interest and various events scheduled in the area.

My husband and I took a much needed weekend away from the kids to spend some quality time together. We were hoping for a quiet couple of days, but what we enjoyed was that and so much more! This home is beautifully kept, squeaky clean and the homey ambiance just embraced us from the moment we arrived. The views of the night sky from the hot tub were incredible! The variety of books and movies is great, there is nothing like relaxing by the fire with a book or enjoying a good movie. Why spend money on a bed and breakfast, or a hotel when you can have more privacy with all the amenities at Tony's for the same price? Definitely a do-over for us!

                  Owner info

                  Year Purchased: 1992

About the owner: We lived in this home for 10 years and continue to take good care of it. The location and 'feel of the house' is just so good, we couldn't part with it. I am a geohydrologist with the Bureau of Indian Affairs, working on the adjudication of water rights for Indian Tribes in the Bureau's Southwest Region (New Mexico and Arizona). We have lived in 'The Land of Entrapment' (Land of Enchantment) since 1985. Be careful, if you stay too long, you may not want to leave.
