Volcan house description
Our finca, 'La Candelita', is named for the delightful Collared Redstart which inhabits this cloud forest region. We are situated in a farming valley just a 5 minute walk from the entrance of Parque Internacional La Amistad, a magnificent park shared with Costa Rica. At an elevation of 2,000 m (6,500 ft.), the climate is spring-like year round. Trails take you along mountain streams and through giant oak forests where the magnificent Resplendent Quetzals commonly nest.
The area is particularly attractive to naturalists and birdwatchers. Local guides, knowledgeable in the natural and human history, are available. A 15 minute drive down a recently paved road takes you to the small town of Cerro Punta and a further 20 minutes to Volcan where you will find grocery stores, bakeries and a good variety of restaurants.
The area is best accessed via a one hour flight from Panama City to David where a car can be rented for the 1.5 hour drive to the mountains. Situated on a small, picturesque lot with a stream and waterfall, the house is 1,100 sq. ft. with 2 bedrooms, one bath and is fully and comfortably furnished, including a completely equipped kitchen.
In addition to hiking and birdwatching in the park, during a stay of 3 days to a week you will find many other interesting activities such as Dracula Orchid Farm (an internationally known orchid breeder), Volcan Baru National Park, Barilles Archaeological Site and white water rafting on the Chiriqui Viejo River. Or, you can just relax on the property and enjoy the expansive view from the comfort of the living room. Many bird species visit the ‘back yard’ and cloud forest specialists such as American Dipper, Torrent Tyrannulet and Black-faced Solitaire are seen almost daily.
You can easily combine a few days at La Candelita with an extended itinerary including the beach (Pacific or Atlantic), the canal area and Panama City.

The property is better than described, clean, well equipped and in a stunningly beautiful location. A short walk to La Amistad National Park and beautiful strolls in the countryside lie just outside the door. Serene colorful gardens surround the property and a lovely, cascading stream borders the house, birds constantly land at the feeders off the deck, the fireplace is stocked with wood, a great movie collection and home theater provide entertainment during the cooler nights. It was a perfect 3 day holiday and a privilege to share such a magnificent home.

the house is set up beautifully for the renters comfort! we rented for only 3 nights and due to flight problems could not make it the first night. darn! wish we could have stayed longer. it did rain while we were there, but the walls of windows in the home made it absolutely beautiful to be inside with a cozy fire in the fireplace. there were constant hummingbirds on the back porch and the rushing stream and gorgeous landscaping turned the property into a secret garden. great - up to date - dvd collection, comfy furniture, good linens, wonderful kitchen. couldn't ask for more! SUV needed to get there.

Owner response: A "secret garden"--what a great way to put it. As you drive up to the gate, there is no way of knowing what a beautiful haven awaits. We travel a lot and we try to make our place the kind of rental that we would like to find. So sorry that you missed one day. Maybe you'll pass our way again. We appreciate you taking the time to let others know that it was a positive experience for you. Kind regards, Connie and Jack
A special place in Panama
A special place in Panama
Even though we visited during the "green season", the rain did not keep us away from exploring this beautiful location. Located within walking distance to the La Amistad park, the home provided us a relaxing place to come back and sit next to the fire and enjoy the lush and tropical scenery outside the windows. The little cafe inside the park served a terrific lunch of soup and the most fantastic tortilla's I have ever tasted. The birds were fantastic to watch as they soared thru the air chasing each other. Thank you Connie for allowing us to share your home.

Owner response: Hi Beth and Steven, Thank you so much for your kind words. It is especially gratifying to hear from folks who have visited during the rainy season. At times it can be quite a challenge, but you obviously not only survived, but enjoyed all that the house and the area have to offer. You're definitely the right kind of people for Cerro Punta. You'd be more than welcome to come back again anytime--perhaps a little longer next time? All the best, Connie and Jack
Better Than Imagined
Better Than Imagined
What a surprise! We arrived to a spotlessly kept home, perfectly equipped with all essentials and more. We could only imagine from the pictures....seeing it in person was even better. The first day we wanted to "sight see" up the road at the Parque Amistad but found out quickly we saw much, much more from the living room at the house. With the tall ceilings throughout we already felt like we were outside. The huge windows open up with screens which added more to the open air sensation. At night we could sit by the fireplace, turn out the lights, and enjoy a firefly show which runs a close second to the meteor showers we've seen in Oregon mountains and Cancun. The birdfeeders attracted so many birds they would actually wait on one another to take a sip! Just below the windows is a beautiful stream with it's constant flow reminding us we were definitely out of the city. As mentioned in another review, a closeby, very reasonably priced restaurant, a walk down the street a couple small markets where we could get essentials, and vegetables growing all around us. We stocked up with a few groceries in David before taking the very inexpensive bus & taxi up the mountain, then got a huge bag of mixed vegetables for $5...we had very little reason to leave the place nor desire. The kitchen was stocked with everything imagineable. We enjoyed strolling down the road and talking with the friendly locals. This home was built with a lot of careful planning to maximize it's outdoor views and comfort. A definite "must" see for anyone who wants to see Panama's natural environment with comfort and style.

What a place
What a place
This is the most home like rental I have ever experienced. From the complete users manual to the great field guide collection, it was very comfortable. We did not want to leave. I wish I was there right now. The views out all the windows of the stream and the gallery forest are terrific. Great garden and kitchen. The surrounding fields and forest are so beautiful it is easy to build a photo collection for your memories. The birds were great and we had a 20 minute show by a male Resplendent Quetzal our last full day in the gallery trees, wow. The hummer feeders were a great show also, Violet Saber-wing battles every day at the feeders were awesome. This house if an easy walk from the entrance to La Amistad Biosphere park. The restaurant just inside the gate, run by local ladies was unbeatable. The owners help with directions for our route and for things to do in and around Volcan were very helpful. This place is a top notch way to experience the mountains of western Panama, and it's wonderful people, scenery, and wildlife.

Why the Owner Chose Volcan:
Being from northern climes, we wanted the cooler temperatures of the cloud forest. After experiencing the over-visitation of cloud forest in Costa Rica, we looked to Panama which is yet largely undiscovered by tourists. We discovered our property while hiking in the area. A former potato field, bordered by forest and stream, it is now a lush and peaceful retreat.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
The highly sought-after Resplendent Quetzal nests within 15 minutes walk of our house and often visits our yard to feed. This is a birder's paradise!
