Our family of five spent Thanksgiving week at The Tannery. It was the perfect cozy get-away! We spent lots of time around the wonderful wood stove, reading, playing board games and watching a few movies. I even cooked a 10 pound turkey along with a full Thanksgiving meal in the tiny kitchen. We loved the comfort, warmth and charm of The Tannery along with the warm mineral spring right in the backyard. We also enjoyed walks with our dog around beautiful Warm Springs. My two teenage sons even slept one night out on the sleeping porch with lows in the 30's! Thank you for the down comforters provided! Thanks for a great cottage!

We went to the Tannery to celebrate my brother's birthday. The property was very nice, and pet friendly which was a must for us. We went hiking and fly fishing on the Jackson River, and spent a morning at Jefferson Pools. A very relaxing getaway! Perfect for two couples. I would definitely recommend staying here, we hope to return in the spring!

All I keep thinking after I have gotten back home and to work is ... it was so... nice. My husband and I spent a week at the Tannery with the grand-kids. We did day trips every day to the surrounding areas. We went paddle boating on Lake Moomaw. Then we went swimming on Lake Moomaw, the water is so beautiful there. We played in Back Creek by the Blowing Springs Campground and checked out the Blowing Springs. We took the kids to Cass WV to ride the railroad up the mountain. We also visited the National Radio Astronomy in Green Bank WV ( we told the grand-kids that they were listening for ET). They loved the place. We hiked in Hidden Valley by the Jackson River. We visited the Bath County Historical Society and the local thrift shop. We ate in and we ate out and enjoyed the dipping pool out back with the minnows. I enjoyed the fireflies at night after it got dark. We spend three great nights on the sleeping porch my husband and I in the beds and the grand-kids in their sleeping bags. We all enjoyed Mimi's painting and artwork around the house. Even the grand-kids enjoyed looking at her paintings. We were very pleased to meet her and Jack during out stay. We had a great time, the place has a wonderful view. I have already been telling my co-workers about the place. It is really wonderful and if you go there do not wait too long to jump into the dipping pool because once you do you will want to do it again. Alice and Dennis and the grand-kids

Owner response: Dear Alice, Dennis and grand-kids, You all are so sweet. Thank you for staying at our house and visiting all our favorite places in and around Bath county. And thank you too for the compliments on my paintings. The Tannery is a treasure and we are lucky to have such great guests love it as much as we do. We enjoyed meeting you all. Please come again soon. Jack and Mimi

Enjoyed a wonderful week "off the grid" at the Tannery. The home is beautiful and wonderfully cozy. The sleeping porch is perfect for those afternoon naps. The location is absolutely perfect as well. It is a quiet little town with all the amenities of home. You can find everything you need between the Dollar General and the IGA - no need to bring tons of food (lesson learned for next visit). Also close enough to attractions such as Natural Bridge and Lake Moomaw for fun day visits. The absolute best part of the Tannery is the dipping pool. Many many many hours were spent enjoying the time in the spring. We also enjoyed watching wildlife (rabbits, deer, chipmunks, squirrels and even the minnows in the spring) and just relaxing. We will certainly return to the Tannery and have already recommended it to family and friends.

I almost hesitate to write this review, because once the "secret" is out, we might have a hard time getting a reservation to return! Ok...here's the secret...only a mere 4 hrs. from DC, The Tannery is the perfect place for a couple to "retreat and de-stress" from the day-to-day craziness of living and working in the greater Washington DC area. Special charms of the house: the screened sleeping porch, the wood stove (to ward off the night chill)...but most of all, the warm springs stream with the dipping pool that flows by the back of the property. We "took the waters" (like Thomas Jefferson did) at least twice each day during our weekend stay. While not "hot" (the water is about 90 degrees), it is so relaxing to just sit on the pebbly creek bottom and let the pristine waters flow around you. Also, if you sit still, in a short time you will have dozens of little minnow "friends" come to visit! Don't worry...they don't bite off that much flesh ;-) As soon as you drive away from your stay at The Tannery, you WILL be planning your return....like we did.

Owner response: Thank you for your wonderful review! And we look forward to having you all stay again! The Tannery is so special to all, especially those who come every year. Glad you are now part of our group!

We were looking for a place that was quiet and cozy, what we found was just that and more. The Tannery is wonderful . The moment we walked in , we knew we were in the right place , the living area is perfect for 4 adults, the wonderful wood stove kept us cozy. Beds were extremely comfortable. Although , we did not sit in the warm creek behind the house we did walk in it. The Jefferson Pools are just down the road and that was a great time relaxing in the warm springs. We found the restaurants delicious , esp Jason's - good sandwiches. I hope we go back during the warmer weather so we can enjoy the beautiful back porches and look at the scenery. The area is quiet ( but great outdoor adventures are available) but we were looking for just a relaxing weekend away with friends and The Tannery fit the bill. The owners are very great to work with and well... just go to the Best Place Ever.

My wife and I and another couple, stayed at the Tannery to participate in the annual Bath County triathlon and it couldn't have been more perfect. We had such a great time. The house is walking distance to the Gristmill Inn where we picked up our race packets, and the baths where we soaked our tired bodies after the race. We also spent hours in the stream out back and lounged on the beautiful porches and lawn. It's important to note that this is the country and this is an old house. We loved every aspect of the house and grounds, and found it provided everything we wanted and needed, but others may miss cable TV or be spooked by a few mice. This place is the definition of country chic but if you're looking for the lap of luxury, you should probably go elsewhere.

Owner response: Thank you all for the wonderful comments both at The Tannery and here in the reviews. It was a pleasure to have you all stay and hope you will come back to Bath County often. The Tannery is a special place and we can't wait to get there each year. We're so glad our guests love it as much as we do.

We drove down from CT and we were certainly not disappointed! We came with our two dogs, and we enjoyed the trails and the lakes immensely. Best of all, was coming back to this lovely place and soaking in the hot spring, or reading on the porch with a glass of wine. Thank you. Denise & Bob, Newtown, CT

We enjoyed our stay at The Tannery immensely. I heard about it from a friend and am so glad we made the trip from St. Louis, MO to stay here. The lovely warm spring was like our personal spa and so refreshing after hiking Warm Springs Mountain. We will be back!

The Tannery is a fabulously inviting picturesque get-a-way!! Our girls weekend was restorative!!! We shot sporting clays, hiked along the Jackson River in the Hidden Valley (look for wild orchids on the bank under the Mountain Laurel) and above the Ingles overlook--perfectly beautiful. We laughed, we ate well at the Grist Mill (be sure to visit the wine cellar), John's Stake House (the view down the valley is breath taking) and on the porch at the Tannery where true simple elegance abounds! Lounging in the warm spring behind the house is a must- I recommend a glass of wine at arms reach. The sleeping porch is the perfect venue to snuggle into the cumfy VMI iron beds, listen to the babbling warm spring and to view the light show provided nightly by the lightening bugs. Don't forget to take a glass of fresh 55 degree spring water to bed with you-just take your glass to the pipe that comes out of the hillside across from the front door. We loved our time at The Tannery and can not wait to return. Thank you for sharing your piece of Heaven!

Mimi, Thanks so much!!! What a great place. My wife two children and two four legged children stayed here in the beginning of August 2009. My daughter loved sleeping on the sleeping porch. We drank the water from the spring in front of the house and soaked in the warm (like bath water) stream behind the house every day. The dogs loved playing in the back yard and walking a long the stream. We had a wonderful dinner at the Grist Mill down the street and a great lunch at The Homestead resort. Great get-away from DC. Thanks again, Jimmy

What a wonderful treat to have an opportunity to stay in this building! It was built by my g-g-g-grandfather, William W. Shields and he was the tanner that operated the tannery. The big yellow house that can be seen up the hill behind The Tannery was his home. Thanks so much for sharing your home!

My spouse and our two college-aged daughters stayed here on Easter 2009 weekend, and despite the dismal weather, we had a delightful weekend. The cottage is cozy, tastefully decorated, peaceful, and very convenient (easy walking distance) to nearby amenities, including a great restaurant, an excellent spa and a friendly and well equipped miniature tavern. The setting and grounds are gorgeous, the rear veranda a delight. The Tannery is a perfect location for a couple's romantic getaway, or quiet weekend with friends --- we will definitely be visiting the Tannery again. Highly Recommended !

Me, my wife, and our dog enjoyed the Tannery because of its seclusion and privacy, but it also offered nearby a wonderful restaurant and warm, natural springs (Jefferson Pools) within walking distance. Quiet location settled on a slopping property with a warm water river in the back of the property. Hammock makes for great napping, and the outsides become the insides thanks to a wonderfully covered and screened porch where two single beds for overflow guests (or napping!) are located. The world famous Homestead hotel is 5 miles away in Hot Springs, with a few shopping distractions for those who must spend money. And just so you know, the Tannery's interior decoration is incredible. Recommend Spring and Fall time of year only, as we did an end-of-summer visit and it was still fairly hot/humid in the area. Overall, it's a "can't miss" vacation for a 2-4 day getaway.

I stayed at the Tannery this past June with my beagle Gracie and a couple of friends including their dog. The Tannery is as lovely as the pictures and wonderfully relaxing and secluded. And although there is a great restaurant close, we didn't feel the need to check it out. There is a grocery store not not far away that was well stocked so we preferred to just stay at "home." We loved the layout which allowed the pups to have a safe run of the house and both porches. We took advantage of the warm spring in the back and just propping our feet up on the back porch. I don't think any other setting could be more relaxing (and Gracie and I travel a lot). We plan to return on a regular basis!

I can't say enough about our experience at the Tannery. Perfectly maintained, clean, and so beautiful. Every modern comfort yet the feel of the history of the place was ever present. A perfect balance. The sleeping porch was a dream for our children as well as the warm stream flowing through the back yard. They found it as entertaining as an in ground pool with the added thrill of being able to bath each night there. The area is beautiful and "slow", perfect for biking through the tiny town, viewing the galleries and local museum. We also found so much history and areas of interest in the area we never knew existed.

My husband and I stayed here last fall 2006 for a week. We were lucky with the weather and the fall leaves were at their peak. The Tannery is an incredibly charming place. In the evenings when it got a little chilly, we built a fire in the Vermont casting stove. We either cooked in or walked down to the local pub. What a wonderful time we had. Can't wait to visit again this year.
