Life goes a little bit slower when you enter Mendocino County, mainly because of the winding roads! Shalimere is located west of Highway 1 on the 'ocean side' of the Irish Beach community, well sited to provide maximum privacy. The real vacation starts when you open the door to Shalimere. Hang your keys on the coat rack and walk into the living room. Take a minute to gaze out the front windows at the glorious Pacific Ocean. Open the sliding glass door leading onto the deck and step outside and listen to the waves breaking about 50 yards away. Take 5 deep breaths and your vacation has officially begun. Your next decision is only necessary if you have brought perishables or your pet. Put the perishables in refrigerator or freezer. Take your pet for a walk, whichever has the most immediate need. (probably the pet!)
Bedroom decision time is easy if its adults and children. The adults get the Master bedroom, the kids get the other. If its all grown ups then a flip of the coin, 'rock, scissors, paper' or drawing straws may be necessary. Both bedrooms have luxury sheets and down alternative comforters with duvet covers. Bathrooms have Aveda salon hair products and full size hair dryers. (A few less things to pack!) After deciding---settle in.
The hot tub is ready whenever you are. There are robes in both closets if you have forgotten your own. You might want to bring slippers, just in case.
There are videos and DVD's to watch or books to read. Many magazines to peruse. Cards, board games, jigsaw puzzles. Seashell guide, hiking guide, kayak guide, tidepool guide, 2013 tide chart and more. We also have an 'out and about book' for local activities information and keep the monthly Mendocino County Tourist newspaper. Our large flat screen TV is hooked up to the Dish Network so you can stay up-to-date with the local major networks, plus CNN, ESPN, TNT with 190 stations or listen to the music channels with a huge variety to choose from.
The new soapstone gas fireplace starts with just a flip of the switch on the side. We call it 'instant ambiance'.
Shalimere is easy to just stay in and enjoy. If you want to head out to the private beach and are up for a rigorous walk down and back, then go for it! Or you can easily drive down the gate accessed private drive, after all, this is your vacation! The beach is nearly 5 miles long, depending on the tide. Sometimes you have it completely to yourself. You might see a few people. It is only for Irish Beach residents & guests so you may meet a kindred soul. The surf can be mighty -so be watchful.
In the surrounding 25 miles you can find all sorts of diversions, enjoyment, pampering. Exploring the nearby towns can yield many treasures and pleasures. The main thing is to enjoy yourself--have a wonderful time and plan to come back again soon. We treat our returning guests to special rates! Ditto if you refer someone. Contact owner for details.
Everyone loves a bright sunny day, but there are those of us who love watching whale migrations (or signing up with one of the nearby whale watching groups) or just relaxing on the huge couch with a book or watching a DVD with the gas fired soapstone fireplace roaring with heat! The rain and the fog are not deterrents to having a great day. Winter is my personal favorite to watch the storms and to see the whales migrating.
Come check out this amazing house at an incredible rate any time of the year. Shalimere is the exception within the Irish Beach community and is the best price house WEST of highway 1. There is no 'high or low' pricing. Exceptionally well priced year round. Updated with care by an owner who loves the house, with great furniture, new beds and luxury linens, not a 'tired old house with 20+ year old furniture' with by an absentee owner managed by an inflexible rental agency. Come experience the difference of a caring owner with an on-site manager 5 minutes away. Julie's goodie basket is full of great treats and fresh fruit. I don’t know what the name Shalimere means, but the best word I can think of is heaven! The pictures do not do this home justice! There truly is an 180 degree view of the ocean and while not hanging over the cliff, it is close enough that you can hear the waves crashing and the birds chirping. My husband spends over 200 nights a year on the road in hotels, so we were looking to get away from it all, and Shalimere was the perfect spot. We felt like we had the entire stretch of coast to ourselves (and in fact on the private beach we did. Not a single soul in site!) The house if very comfortable and extremely well equipped (shampoo, etc in the bathrooms, all the cooking utensils and spices you could ever need in the in the kitchen, tons of games & movies for entertainment and cozy bathrobes for relaxing after the hot tub). The added touch of the welcome basket and ice cream in the fridge made us feel even more welcome. While there is plenty to do in the area, we spent most of our timing relaxing on the deck, enjoying the views, sipping wine in the hot tub and watching the sunset while BBQuing dinner. Thank you Lorie for sharing your beautiful home with us. We truly felt like we were staying at a friend’s house and can’t wait to return to your little slice of heaven!Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, pet owners, romantic getaway.

We've been stayed many times at Irish Beach over the last 20 plus years and this is by far one of the best homes it's been our pleasure to enjoy. Our first time without our kids so we took our dog. The house was perfect for a family get-a-way with the family pet. We will certainly consider a return visit as we love the private beach. The furnishings are lovely, the kitchen is well equipped and the home is well maintained. It was so helpful having someone to call when we had a question. We really enjoyed the quietness of the area. The house suited us perfectly and it was nicely decorated and fully stocked with anything you would need. We didn't have any issues at all, went very smoothly. It was like staying at our own beach house. There was even snacks and fresh fruit set out for us! We have been to Irish Beach many times, but this was our first stay at the Shalimere and we loved it. We will be back. The view of the ocean was amazing. It was a great place to sit back, relax, and unwind. Our dog felt right at home and did not want to leave. The weather was great and we always had the beach to ourselves. The house was clean and well maintained. All the little extras (fruit, snacks, dog treats, and etc) make a big difference. We look forward to our next visit!Recommended for: Families with teenagers, pet owners, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.

My girlfriend and I had a great time at the Shalimere on Valentine's weekend. The views were amazing, and we loved the walk down to the quiet and beautiful beach. The house was very comfortable and is really nicely decorated. It is in a great quiet location but not too far from Point Arena, Mendocino, and lots of other interesting spots to explore. We would strongly recommend this place. One piece of advice: go grocery shopping before you come because the general store in town down the road from the house is a bit limited.Recommended for: Sightseeing, pet owners, romantic getaway.

What a beautiful stay for us. The caretakers Julie and Ron, great job making everything so wonderful for our stay. The hot tub was excellent, the sounds of the surf and thanks for making sure the wheather was perfect for our stay. Traveling up and down the coast was a breeze with the perfect location. Thanks for the extra information for making the road trip home exelerating. BTW, sandwiches have got up to $7 now at that little deli, but well worth it. Will be back someday. We stayed for three nights in the middle of the week. It was heavenly! The house itself is beautifully furnished and clean. The hot tub/spa was clean and we used it each night after we returned from our day trips. The private beach is really cool, we stayed and watched the sunset and it was magical. We wanted to escape for the Thanksgiving Holiday. Our stay here was perfect! The dogs loved the hikes to and from the beach (not difficult if you walk daily) and the view from the deck. They were very interested in the deer. There are a lot of other dogs around and the beach is quiet and private. The views are to die for! The dogs even chased a sea lion into the ocean! We loved the house and it was comfy and beautiful. The kitchen was perfect as we brought tons of food and cooked daily. We will definitely be returning!Recommended for: Pet owners, girls getaway.

Additional information about rental rates
There is a non refundable $125 cleaning fee for the house and spa. The damage deposit is a separate cheque/charge. All the VRBO houses at Irish Beach have these fees. The VRBO "Book it Now" system has double booked my house repeatedly, so I no longer offer that service. Normally I can get back to rental requests within 1-2 hours during the week and 4-5 hours on the weekend.

NO SMOKING ALLOWED IN HOUSE In the event of a cancellation, a full refund of the deposit will be made less $100.00 cancellation fee, if cancellation is received 60 days or more before arrival. Cancellations received 60 days or less will result of the forfeiture of the total rental cost. Refundable damage deposit will be returned within 14 days of cancellation notification. There are no refunds for arriving late or leaving early. By signing below you agree to release and hold harmless, and will make no claim against Shalimere, Lorie Shepard, her family, heirs, agent’s, or contractors by reason of any liability for injury or damage which I may suffer, arising out of stay at Shalimere. I have carefully read this agreement and understand all its contents, and I sign if of my own free will. I am aware this includes a release of liability and is a binding contract between Shalimere/Lorie Shepard and their agents and me, and it likewise shall be binding to my heirs, executors, administrators and assigns, and members of my own family for whom I sign. References herein to I shall include any family member. Shalimere/Lorie Shepard, shall not be responsible for any lost or stolen articles of any nature. Repair and routine maintenance are an integral part of the property management business. All hot tub, VCR, DVD, stereo, washer, dryer, etc are subject to occasional repair and maintenance “down time” and guests are subject to using at their own risk. There are no refunds due to maintenance of hot tub or appliances. We will let you know asap if there is any maintenance scheduled. I agree to these terms and conditions of this rental agreement. Guests who are not in compliance may be asked to vacate the premises immediately with all forfeiture of all monies collected. Any smoking inside of the house shall be grounds for forfeiture of total damage deposit plus any other damage to house. Total number of guests are limited to those whose names appear on the rental agreement. Please respect the house limit of four guests unless other arrangements are made. Check in time is 4 pm and check out time is 11 am. This gives us time to make sure the house is ready for all guests. If booking time allows, we can make arrangements for different check in times. Year Purchased: 2007
About the owner: Another trip around the sun and it's time to go back up to Shalimere. I have been visiting Irish Beach for almost 25 years and finally decided to take the plunge and buy and do my own vacation rental. I did most of the sweat equity work with a lot of help from Ron and Julie Trathen. Ron built the center island and custom stainless stove surround, installed the soapstone gas fireplace, 'on demand' hot water, oversaw the new heating system installation, arranged for the bamboo flooring installation and installed the pillar chandelier above the dining table. No small feat considering the peaked ceiling. I got to strip off wallpaper, scrub walls, paint, paint and paint. Julie takes care of all the pre-visit cleaning, interior and other details, Ron takes care of everything else. Couldn't do it without them. Tired of the hassles and fees with the local rental agency, we have lowered the rate and gone independent. We love this home and wish to share it with others
Why the Owner Chose Irish Beach:
Location? Views? Well, it was both! I love the octagonal shape of the front of the house with all the windows and the fabulous views. Basically it just needed a some updating to make it work better. (Goodbye carpet, hello bamboo!) Just far enough from 'the City/SF' yet close to 'the Village/Mendocino'. Also perfect to just stay 'home' and chill in the hot tub. As a dog owner, it has a great deck set up to keep the pooches safe from the wilds and they can still march around and check out what's going on or just snooze in the sun. The private beach is also a great asset. Put it all together and you have a perfect vacation home location.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
Peace, quiet, ocean view enjoyed best from the hot tub with a glass of wine. Personally I love the fog so I don't get too worked up about the weather. Great star gazing also with our star scope! Nice big couch to lounge on. Center Island has stove with ocean view and seating to keep everyone busy helping or chatting. A self admitted caffeine addict, there are three different ways to get your fix: mr coffe drip, a french press or the espresso machine. There are usually pods available for the espresso machine to save you the trouble of grinding and packing it up and cleaning it afterward. Satellite TV provides huge variety of music or channels for those who cannot live without. Comfy deck chairs with cushions for sun worshipers. I have been known to sit in the hot tub with an umbrella if it is raining. It's an invigorating walk down to the private beach--not for the faint of heart. Personally, I walk, but you can easily drive down and take a long walk and live to tell about it.
