Life goes a little bit slower when you enter Mendocino County, mainly because of the winding roads! Shalimere is located west of Highway 1 on the "ocean side" of the Irish Beach community, well sited to provide maximum privacy. The real vacation starts when you open the door to Shalimere. Hang your keys on the coat rack and walk into the living room. Take a minute to gaze out the front windows at the glorious Pacific Ocean. Open the sliding glass door leading onto the deck and step outside and listen to the waves breaking about 50 yards away. Take 5 deep breaths and your vacation has officially begun. Your next decision is only necessary if you have brought perishables or your pet. Put the perishables in refrigerator or freezer. Take your pet for a walk, whichever has the most immediate need. (probably the pet!)
Bedroom decision time is easy if its adults and children. The adults get the Master bedroom, the kids get the other. If its all grown ups then a flip of the coin, "rock, scissors, paper" or drawing straws may be necessary. Both bedrooms have luxury sheets and down alternative comforters with duvet covers. Bathrooms have Aveda salon hair products and full size hair dryers. After deciding---settle in.
The hot tub is ready whenever you are. There are robes in both closets if you have forgotten your own. You might want to bring slippers, just in case.
There are videos and DVD's to watch or books to read. Many magazines to peruse. Cards, board games, jigsaw puzzles. Seashell guide, hiking guide, kayak guide, tidepool guide, 2011 tide chart and more. We also have an "out and about book" for local activities information and keep the monthly Mendocino County Tourist newspaper. Our large flat screen TV is hooked up to the Dish Network so you can stay up-to-date with CNN, NBC, HBO or listen to the music channels with a huge variety to choose from.
The new soapstone gas fireplace starts with just a flip of the switch on the side. We call it "instant ambiance".
Shalimere is easy to just stay in and enjoy. If you want to head out to the private beach and are up for a rigorous walk down and back, then go for it! Or you can easily drive down the gate accessed private drive, after all, this is your vacation! The beach is nearly 5 miles long, depending on the tide. Sometimes you have it completely to yourself. You might see a few people. It is only for Irish Beach residents & guests so you may meet a kindred soul. The surf can be mighty -so be watchful.
In the surrounding 25 miles you can find all sorts of diversions, enjoyment, pampering. Exploring the nearby towns can yield many treasures and pleasures. The main thing is to enjoy yourself--have a wonderful time and plan to come back again soon. We treat our returning guests to special rates! Ditto if you refer someone. Contact owner for details.
Everyone loves a bright sunny day, but there are those of us who love watching whale migrations (or signing up with one of the nearby whale watching groups) or just relaxing on the huge couch with a book or watching a DVD with the gas fired soapstone fireplace roaring with heat! Come check out this amazing house at an incredible rate. Shalimere is the exception within the Irish Beach community. Updated with care by an owner who loves the house, with great furniture, new beds and luxury linens, not tired old house with 20+ year old furniture by an absentee owner managed by an inflexible rental agency. Come experience the difference of a caring owner with an on-site manager 5 minutes away. Read the reviews and see how our guests are treated and feel about the house. The pictures do not do this house justice!
(Please note, I keep the availability calendar up to date. VRBO does not show "pending" listings. I usually hold requested days for a few days and then update/remove when i don't hear back or receive the deposit) Many holidays are still available for 2012. Come enjoy the days on the wild Mendocino coast in Winter.
Current pending dates as of 16 December 2011:
none
All other reservations currently confirmed with no cancellations
Take good care,

Map & Owner's Profile
Beautiful Vacation Home 50 Yards from the Bluff at Irish Beach
Year Purchased: 2007
Why the Owner Chose Irish Beach
Location? Views? Well, it was both! I love the octagonal shape of the front of the house with all the windows and the fabulous views. Basically it just needed a some updating to make it work better. (Goodbye carpet, hello bamboo!) Just far enough from "the City/SF" yet close to "the Village/Mendocino". Also perfect to just stay "home" and chill in the hot tub. As a dog owner, it has a great deck set up to keep the pooches safe from the wilds and they can still march around and check out what's going on or just snooze in the sun. The private beach is also a great asset. Put it all together and you have a perfect vacation home location.
The Unique Benefits at this House
Peace, quiet, ocean view enjoyed best from the hot tub with a glass of wine. Personally I love the fog so I don't get too worked up about the weather. Great star gazing also with our star scope! Nice big couch to lounge on. Center Island has stove with ocean view and seating to keep everyone busy helping or chatting. A self admitted caffeine addict, there are three different ways to get your fix: mr coffe drip, a french press or the espresso machine. There are usually pods available for the espresso machine to save you the trouble of grinding and packing it up and cleaning it afterward. Satellite TV provides huge variety of music or channels for those who cannot live without CNN or HBO or NBC. Comfy deck chairs with cushions for sun worshipers. I have been known to sit in the hot tub with an umbrella if it is raining. It's an invigorating walk down to the private beach--not for the faint of heart. Personally, I drive down and take a long walk and live to tell about it.
Owner's Map of Irish Beach
Another trip around the sun and it's time to go back up to Shalimere. We have been visiting Irish Beach for almost 25 years and finally decided to take the plunge and buy and do our own vacation rental. I did most of the sweat equity work with a lot of help from Ron and Julie Trathen. Ron built the center island and custom stainless stove surround, installed the soapstone gas fireplace, "on demand" hot water, oversaw the new heating system installation, arranged for the bamboo flooring installation and installed the pillar chandelier above the dining table. No small feat considering the peaked ceiling. I got to strip off wallpaper, scrub walls, paint, paint and paint. Julie takes care of all the pre-visit cleaning, interior and other details, Ron takes care of everything else. Couldn't do it without them. Tired of the hassles and fees with the local rental agency, we have lowered the rate and gone independent. We love this home and wish to share it with others

My husband and I just celebrated our twenty-fourth wedding anniversary at Shalimere. We had an amazing time! The house is clean, warm, cozy, welcoming and is truly like a home away from home. We went to Fort Bragg twice and ate lunch at the brewery and at Piaci Pizza. We ate lunch at the Pier Chowder House and Tap Room in Point Arena one day which is a must! They had excellent food and the atmosphere was great. There were people surfing and we sat right by the window so we could watch. We had planned on eating at some of the great restaraunts in the area for dinner while we were there, but the house and the hot tub were so great, we ate in each night. The only regret that we had is that we did not bring our two dogs. The house is set up perfectly for your pet, with a fenced in deck, crate, and a basket full of things for a comfortable visit! The welcome basket for us was a nice touch also. This was our first VRBO experience and it was great. Lorie, Julie and Ron are all very easy going. We will definately be visiting this property again and again, next time with our dogs! Thank you again Lorie, Julie and Ron.

My adult son and I stayed at Shalimere from Dec. 24 to Dec. 27, and had a wonderful time. The house is very comfortable -- we really enjoyed the gas-powered soapstone stove each night. The view is fantastic, especially at sunset, and the beach is a short 20-minute walk away. Check the tide tables before heading to the beach, though -- we almost lost a dog to a rogue wave when the tide was coming in. We spent one day exploring further afield, visiting a virgin redwood forest, but we were mostly content to hang out right at "home." We had an excellent fish dinner at the Point Arena pier chowder house -- fun, relaxed atmosphere with 31 beers on tap. Be smart and book several nights; we had a hard time pulling ourselves away to return to the "real world."

My family just returned from a week at Shalimere, and we are already planning on our next visit! Two very comfy beds and well-appointed bathrooms (with plenty of hot water), quality, cozy, linens, a wonderful great room/kitchen/dining area with the best views you could ask for. We loved the dog-proof wrap around deck, the basket of dog goodies and a full size washer and dryer. Lorie, Julie and Ron haven't forgotten a thing, and they got back to my (many) questions very quickly. We had a wonderful time! We highly recommend this home!

Three of us plus our two small pooches stayed over the Thanksgiving weekend. We had an wonderful three days and plan to return at the earliest opportunity. The view is magnificent and the interior was a pleasure to enjoy. Lots of nice touches to make a person's stay even more enjoyable. We ate the Garcia River Casino for Thanksgiving and the recommendation was right on. Absolutely wonderful food. Food shopping is close in Manchester and we loved that Irish Beach is out of the hurried pace of Mendocino and Fort Bragg. We'll be returning. Thanks Lorie..............
Owner response:Hi Jim, It is always great to share the house over the holidays. Julie is amazing with the "local" information on restaurants. Looking forward to seeing you back. Take care, Lorie

The two of us stayed 6 nights mid-Sept 2011; the house is lovely and nicely equipped, very comfortable furniture and queen bed in master (we didn't use the other bed). Double shower; large kitchen; nice bathrobes, views from every room. And the hot tub was wonderful at night! The view is nice but there were certainly days the fog was too thick to see much. We were disappointed in the beach itself - the sand was cluttered with huge wads of kelp which had washed up - everywhere. Not a pleasant spot to sit or picnic. Perhaps this is seasonal. The roads are very narrow and windy so we chose not to go out at night or to visit the wineries on Hwy 128. Golf was great at Sea Ranch, less than an hour away; hiking is good, Mendocino is very touristy. Would definately recommend this property for a few days.
Owner response:Hi Emily, Great to have you at the house. The storms brought all the kelp onto the beach. Not something anyone could have predicted. I was up after you in Oct and it was still there. Let's hope the winter storms take it all back. Glad you enjoyed the golf at Sea Ranch. There is another course at Little River waiting for you to try out! Smile. Hope to see you again.

My little family of 3 had a wonderful time in this charming home. The house was beautiful in the pictures, but we were so surprised and estatic when we first arrived, better than expected. The home was so comfortable that there were a few days we didn't even leave the house. Our daughter, 11 years old, loves coming to Irish Beach and ask if we can come back again. We will be back!!!! Thank you so much for the goodie basket and the fabulous vacation.
Owner response:Hi Carrie, Glad you enjoyed your stay. Hope to see you and your family again in the future.

what a beautiful spot to spend this special occasion. the house was exactly as pictured and described - it felt like home, only better. The welcome basket was so appreciated, as we were "starving" from the road trip from SanFrancisco. Bed and bathrooms were well appointed, the decor was truly relaxing. We loved the big kitchen and being able to see the ocean from all the windows. Everything was immaculate, and the only thing we missed was our dog. Lori's email was very helpful, but just a note: the trip from SF via 101 / 128 is VERY, VERY winding and a bit nerve-wracking. Watch for bicyclists in the summer - the roads are narrow, no shoulders, and there are too many hairpin turns and switchbacks to count. Renting a car? Get a small and sporty model, and watch for cows on some of those mountain roads!! Seriously! We met some very friendly residents who shared their knowledge of the area. Don't miss Mendocino shops off the main drag, Ft.Bragg's sea glass beach, and the redwood forests. we have trees in Central New York, but nothing like those!! We will return - and can't thank Lori and Julie enough for all they've done to make Shalimere "the best vacation we've ever had" verbatim from my hubby.
Owner response:Thank you to the Happy Honeymooners! Glad everyone enjoyed their stay. There is so much to do, it can be overwhelming. Sounds like you made good progress on some of the highlights of Mendocino County. The Irish Beach Neighbors are very warm and welcoming. The roads are all winding, so best to opt for the sports car and enjoy the trip? Worth the drive in the end, I think we all will agree! Looking forward to seeing you again in the future! Take care, Lorie Julie and Ron
