Helena cabin description

The Professor’s Elkhorn Cabin is a modern Log House built in 1982. Nestled on the edge of the trees at a little over 5000 feet, often times during the summer it is refreshingly cooler here than in town. Your stay here will be a quiet one. The house is 1/2 mile down a private lane which has five homes. One of the adjoining landowners has 6000 acres - his neighbor is the 300,000 acre Helena National Forest and Elkhorn Wildlife Management Unit.

Needless to say there are many wonderful day hikes in the area including 8491 foot Casey Peak. We can furnish maps and guides to local hikes and fishing. Some of the best trout fishing in the world is nearby (one little stream is only 4 miles away).

We have his and hers mountain bikes you can borrow to go for a ride and explore around.

We have lots and lots of wildflowers - we'll leave a book for you.

The cabin is furnished with many antiques and uniques plus art from many Montana artists, photographers and ceramicist.

'The Best Small Art Town in America':
Helena has been named 'The Best Small Art Town in America' - you don't have to wander around town too far before you realize why. I'm proud to contribute to places like the Holter Museum of Art, The Archie Bray Foundation for Ceramic Arts and The Myrna Loy Center for the Performing and Visual Arts and Helena's Professional Symphony.

Live Music:
Alive at Five rotates around town on Wednesday evenings during the summer, closing off a block, providing live music, food and crafts.

Montana is a small town:
This house was new to VRBO in 2010 - I have listened to the advice of a friend of mine who has a VRBO listing in Missoula, MT. Many of his favorite visitors are return visitors and friends of past visitors. He has a long list of glowing Guest Comments. I am offering this cabin at a reasonable price because also I want to get to know return visitors and their friends.

Warning, on your return home you may wind up developing the urge to buy a new mattress after staying here.

This house has always been a non-smoking household.
Please, in respect to others and because of the threat of forest fires, no smoking in the house or on the property.

                          Owner info

                          Year Purchased: 1990

About the owner: I (Jeff Van Tine) am just starting my 10th year of teaching Photography at Carroll College in Helena. I was a 2010 recipient of an award from the Hunthausen Center for Peace and Justice. This award made it possible for my students to photograph portraits of homeless people at the God's Love Shelter here in Helena. Prints accompanied by their stories were on exhibit at several Helena venues in 2010 and 2011. I grew up in Northern Delaware and have lived in Helena since 1980. I thought that I would just live here a couple of years and then move on to a nicer place - I haven't found that nicer place yet. My photography has been published and collected throughout Montana and nationwide. Some of the organizations who have used my images include, The Nature Conservancy, Montana Wilderness Association and The Sierra Club. My images are sold at Helena's Holter Museum of Art and Latigo and Lace in Augusta, MT.

                          Why the Owner Chose Helena:
My mother purchased the house in 1990. In 1998 she decided to trade houses with me - she moved back into town and I moved to the Cabin in the Mountains. This place is a special refuge from the hustle and bustle of the real world. At the same time, town is nearby if needed. On a larger scale, Helena is halfway between two of our National Wonders - Yellowstone and Glacier National Parks.

The Unique Benefits at this Cabin:
Eating breakfast or dinner on the deck is a wonderful experience. Seeing the sun rise and set over the mountains, watching and hearing hummingbirds plus the many other birds at the feeders and in the trees surrounding the house seems to make time stand still. Wildlife regularly seen on the property includes Elk, Mule Deer, White Tail Deer, and Fox, . Wildlife seen near by includes: Fox, Coyote, Moose, Black Bear, Pine Martin and Bobcat. Birds: Many birds can be seen if you keep the feeders here from going empty (we supply the seed). Some of the regular visitors include: Black Capped and Mountain Chickadees, Pygmy, Red and White Breasted Nuthatch, Downey, Hairy and Pileated Woodpeckers, Crossbills, Grosbeaks, Junco and Three kinds of hummingbirds. Others seen around the property include Owls, Ravens, Red Tail Hawks and Wild Turkey.
