The cabin is located in the community of Whale Pass, in the heart of the Tongass National Forest. Do your homework before you come, with some 17 million acres the Tongass offers a wilderness experience unlike anywhere else. Most of our guests travel to Ketchikan via Alaska Airlines, then a short float plane trip to Prince of Wales, from there you are met by one of our staff and escorted to Whale Pass. All the amenities are available on the island, ie. groceries, gas, etc.
Your cabin includes the use of all the equipment to make your trip memorable, from canoes, kayaks, 4x4 SUV, for the 1600 miles of road on POW. There is a commercial fish vacuum machine, freezers, crab pots, shrimp pots, all the usual sport fishing equipment. For the eco-tourist, fish and wildlife abound, from resident bears, eagles, seals, boat access to whale watching, nearby caves, totem parks and such. We are set up for year round guests, be it winter steelhead runs or a chance to experience the solitude.
Our family lives on the property, and are always handy to answer any concerns. This is not a rough camping trip for the guys, this is a place you could bring your family and be comfortable. This is the wilderness, not the cruise ship or tour bus scene. At the end of your stay we will deliver you back to your float plane, another advantage to POW is a daily ferry service to Ketchikan. There is no fear of being stuck here in inclement weather.

We had a wonderful stay at the cabin. It sits above a beautiful fishing spot - the salmon were spawning and there were bald eagles all around. Even the occasional shy bear came out for a peek. We had a group staying the the cabin for a work trip. The found it to be super comfy - with all of the amenities you could possibly need. It's interior is clean and lovely and the kitchen is fully equipped. The Cook family really made us feel at home and helped us when we had questions or needed a little extra support. Super nice family who made us feel welcome - we all would love to come back for another stay (but next time for vacation)! We recommend touring the nearby caves, the impressive karst trails and the marshes that have fantastic bald eagle viewing!Recommended for: Sightseeing, girls getaway, families with young children, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.

Got back a few weeks ago from a week stay at Gregg Cooks Alaska Fish Tail Lodge. My wife and I had a great time. The cabin had every thing we needed. The boat was great for fishing and picking up the crab pots. The Cooks' were a great host. The boys, Nate and Jarred were more than helpful.Enjoyed fishing with them. IF you want a great remote place to go to, this is the spot. If your looking for shopping centers, go some place else. The only problem was, one week wan't long enough. Starting to plan next years trip there. Bring everything you need, no shopping malls. Taking my own pickup worked great for us. Didn't have to worry about weight problem, and what to bring or leave at home. The Ferry ride from Prince Ruppert to Ketchikan and then to Prince of wales is very enjoyable.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, families with teenagers.

My wife and I had a great time. The cabin was nice and clean and located right on the river. Great fishing in the river and in the bay. Greg and his family were friendly and most helpful and went the extra mile to make sure we had a great time and caught fish. We will definitely go back again.Recommended for: Sightseeing, tourists without a car, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.

Greg and his family were great host. His knowledge of the area was a bonus. The Cabin was well stocked and very clean. A great place for 4 people to stay. Although we did not get to fish all the areas that were available, the areas that we did fish were great. Fresh fish and seafood every night for dinner. It is always taste better when you catch it yourself. Black Bears, Sitka Deer Eagles, Whales, and seals galore. What a treat when you are fishing and you can see the whales in the distance. Whales Pass is a great place to get away from it all. Trust me, you are away from it all. It is a must that you are a self reliant. But that is a bonus when you can go out on your own and catch big fish in Alaska. The Island is beautiful and worth a drive in a vehicle that Greg provides. That was worth a lot to us to have the vehicle. That way you are not on anyone elses time frame. Can't wait to go back.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+.

My family stayed here on our vacation. With 2 teenage girls having fun in a remote wilderness seemed unlikely. But they had so much fun. Lots to do including fishing and just watching the wildlife from the deck. Even my 4 year old nephew had a wonderful time, he still tells everyone about his trip and the fish he cought that was bigger than he was. Highly recommend this spot and the cabins. Very clean and all the comforts of home.Recommended for: Sightseeing, tourists without a car, people with disabilities, girls getaway, families with young children, pet owners, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.

About the owner: My wife and I were raised in the mountains of Western North Carolina. An outdoor family always looking for an excuse to travel. I am the fifth generation in the lumber business in the Appalachians and my wife a school teacher. A few years ago we realized we were living in a rat race and the rats were winning. After careful prayer and consideration we uprooted and moved our family to Whale Pass. This is not a hobby or investment property for our family, this is our home. If you need a break from your own version of the rat race, my family and I welcome you to take a break. Whether you are an avid sportsman, or just need a little fresh air, Alaska really is the last frontier.
Why the Owner Chose Whale Pass:
Southeast Alaska has so much to offer for the outdoorsman, plenty of wildlife, clean water, and the ocean. As a young man I remember my grandpa telling me. "Son, your either at the mountains or at the sea, or you aint nowhere." I tell you there is a lot to that, and Prince of Wales has it all.
The Unique Benefits at this Cabin:
Be awaken by the scream of eagles. We are located on the road system, with electricity 24/7. Endless hot water and the comforts of home in the Alaskan bush. We keep a boat at the public dock, there are endless days of wildlife viewing, and trekking then return to all the comforts of home.
