The Aloha Cottage is a charming and romantic Balinese-inspired guest house with magnificent teak wood carvings throughout. Perched atop the highest spot on the property with a backdrop of giant Eucalyptus trees, it is designed to offer our guests spacious living with vaulted ceilings, indoor/outdoor living spaces and an open floor plan. As unique inside as on the outside, the Aloha Cottage boasts a pyramid-shaped skylight at the apex of the eight-sided, vaulted ceiling. One can actually lay-back on the bed at night and gaze at the stars through this unique, architectural feature. Beautiful imported carvings, that were specifically designed and crafted for it by artisans in Bali, can be seen throughout. A combination of recessed lighting and wall sconces with dimmer controls provide great ambience within the well-planned space.
The spacious octagonal living area is enhanced by its 14 foot tall open-beam ceilings. The floors are acid washed terra-cotta with built-in radiant heat for added comfort. The design of the main room with its 'living in the round' is so unique! One section offers an Asian-style sit-on-the-floor dining space with custom-built table for two, while another is dedicated to a cozy lounge area. There is a large wall-mounted flat screen TV and a stereo in the built-in wall cabinet. And finally, at the enter of this amazing space, there is a king-size custom-crafted platform bed.
The kitchen is well-equipped for your cooking and dining pleasure. It features gorgeous granite counter tops, a full-size refrigerator/freezer and a full-size, four-burner gas stove and oven. A large 3-panel bay window overlooks the bamboo garden. This kitchen is wonderfully completed by a compliment of solid wood cabinets and hand-carved Teak wood drawer fronts.

We stayed at Aloha Cottage for our 10th anniversary and WOW! I cannot say enough about how perfect this place is! We had been to Maui before and stayed at a hotel on the beach. We wanted to try something different this time and It was such a different experience to have the privacy, peace and respite of a cottage that is away from the crowds. We chose this cottage because of the soaking tub and the cool architecture, but once we got there it had everything we needed. Full kitchen, barbecue, and a huge king size bed that was more comfortable than our bed at home. There is also a double shower and the bathroom has a dual vanity. There are lounge chairs on the lanai and also a little breakfast table--so nice to be outdoors with nothing but the sounds of birds in the mornings. We loved Aloha Cottage and definitely won't wait another 10 years to come back!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

Nestled in the mountains of Maui this ideal getaway offers luxury as well as seclusion. Within driving distance from beautiful Maui beaches, it is also minutes away from a forest walk or the local village (Makawao). All home comforts away from home and a beautiful view.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

This was my first visit to Maui and I couldn't have been more pleased with my choice to stay at Aloha Cottage. The property is secluded, quiet & gorgeous. The cottage is upscale, clean & beautiful. The kitchen is fully stocked which is very important to me. The outdoor tub on the lanai is heaven - nothing like soaking in a hot tub every evening in paradise. I was lucky enough to have a full moon for company! The owners were available to answer any questions I had, to offer suggestions only a local would know and yet they were very respectful of my privacy. The location upcountry is perfectly situated for peace, quiet & fresh air. It was easy to make daytrips to other locations on the island. Also close to the best natural food store on the island, Mana Foods in PaiaRecommended for: Age 55+, romantic getaway, girls getaway, sightseeing.

Located up a mountain, this is a very special place to stay on Maui. Your own private home away from home with everything you might need. Be aware of the micro-climate here and bring warm clothes. Wonderful to look up at night (while still in bed) and see the stars. Great for honeymooners.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, romantic getaway.

This was my first trip to Maui and I stayed in the Thai Tree House. It was my utter good fortune. It really is the perfect place to rest and recuperate. As I drove through the bamboo on the approach to the house I knew that my stay would be a special. I grinned as I explored the gorgeous place where I would be staying for the coming week. Immaculately clean, spacious, light, although surrounded by trees, airy and with supremely tasteful decor and furnishing. The deck is gorgeous, looking out through the trees down the valley and with a sizeable hot tub. The property is so peaceful and secluded. I did not see a soul unless I wanted to. The owners value the privacy of their guests very highly, but, if asked, make themselves available to offer invaluable advice known only to locals. I availed myself of their knowledge and had many wonderful and very special experiences that I would probably have missed had I followed the guidebook. Maui has so much to offer and Aloha Cottage and the Thai Tree House are ideally situated for exploring every corner of the island and without ever needing to encounter a "resort"... and why would you want to if you come to Maui? I felt completely at home whether returning to crash after a day packed with hiking, swimming or flying (yes, check out flying lessons in Hana) or choosing to stay at the cottage and have a quiet day reading and pottering around the super cute town of Makawao. Being on the slopes of Haleakala makes it an ideal base for heading up to watch the sun rise or set from the crater's edge...but bring warm clothes for the sunrise! You can also get a head start on most of the rest of the island on the "must-do" drive to Hana (Tip: before you do the drive, get the owners to tell you how to get to the bamboo forest.) I really loved my time on Maui. It was a much needed vacation and Maui proved to be paradise. The focal point for that experience of paradise was staying in this truly wonderful property. I cannot recommend it too highly... I just hope it doesn't get so busy that I can't get a booking! I plan to return to Maui soon, and often. There is nowhere else that I would consider staying in the future. Just perfect. Thank you.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

My 9 year old daughter and I stayed here at the beginning of the month and absolutely fell in love. The space was gorgeous: upscale, super clean, very quiet (important to me, as I have sleep issues). The kitchen and bathroom were stocked with everything we need, and Kristin, the owner, was available to us at all times when we had questions. The big bath tub on the spacious balcony with beautiful views was AMAZING. My daughter and I were in it every morning and evening, whether we needed a bath or not! The bed was really comfortable (again, important to me, due to sleep and back issues!) and the bedding was excellent. We took day trips down to the adorable town of Makawao, to Paia, and over to Kihei and Wailea. It was great to be in the heat of the beach areas, but what I really loved about the location of this rental is that it's partway up a mountain, so the climate is cooler and perfect. I'm not a big heat person, unless I'm in the ocean or a pool, so it was so nice to come home after a hot, sweaty day at the beach, shower, and be able to have dinner on the balcony in the cool breeze, listening to the birds and the trees in the wind. Again, due to my sleep issues, I have a really hard time sleeping in the heat, and it got chilly enough at night here that I was perfectly comfortable in my pj's and the comforter on the bed. The Aloha Cottage was a great place for my daughter and I to just hang out and relax, take walks (I recommend the Pine Forest, just a few minutes up the hill), take baths, and lay in the sun. It was also a great base for us to explore farther reaches of the island, away from the tourist crowds, noise, and traffic. A perfect spot for a couple who appreciate quiet, privacy, understated elegance and comfort. Can't wait to go back next year!Recommended for: Age 55+, romantic getaway, girls getaway.

Why the Owner Chose Makawao:
We chose Upcountry Maui because it green, lush and beautiful, unlike the Kihei or Lahaina side of the island that can feel like a 'dry desert'. It has the most amazing air, filled with hints of Eucalyptus and fresh tropical scents. There is a gentle mist some mornings that keeps everything vibrant and alive. One awakes to a soft symphony of tropical birds, the scent of fresh mountain air and the aroma of multitudes of flowers in bloom.
