The sign at the door says "summer retreat est'd 1967". That could well be the last time anything in the cottage was touched, other than the welcome (but now pretty much standard) addition of wi-fi. The wallpaper and decor are straight from the 1960s. Everything more or less worked, but the beds were small (downstairs double is not for anyone more than 5 ft 6 tall, upstairs only just ok for 6 ft) and one of the two single beds very poor. Shower got water on the floor as much as in the shower tray. Very basic kitchen equipment, and a dishwasher which made most things dirtier than when they went in. The fridge worked most of the time. No a/c - somehow I just expected everywhere in the US has a/c, so this was a surprise. The stair rail in the cottage is unsafe - not good if you have young children. Generally equipment levels and furnishings were not of the standard we had expected. Not the cleanest of places either - dirt and cobwebs aplenty. The balcony on the back bedroom is pointless - it looks out on to a wall of earth about 15 feet from the back of the house, which is the side of the hill into which it is built. In Europe there is normally a welcome pack of basic essentials at the rental property when you arrive - coffee, sugar, etc - and often a little extra surprise. Maybe that is not the practice in the US - but it helps start the week well. We enjoyed the hot tub, the sailboat, and the lake is lovely for swimming. The beach is not wide enough to sit on - this is where the rowing boat and sailboat are pulled up on to the shore. There is a grassy sitting area next to this, and there is the boat dock - both pleasant enough places to sit. The garden up by the cottage needs some attention - grass is a little patchy. We booked this partly on the basis of the one review from 2010 on the site at the time of our booking. Whoever wrote this review must have stayed in a different place to us! Note that the headline says "secluded" - well, that depends on your definition of secluded. There is (as the advert says) a cottage right next door which is where the owners stay (though they left on Monday, returning Friday pm) and there are neighbouring properties all along the road which runs down the lakeside - so a lot of holiday cottages around. Overall, not at all what we had expected - but fortunately the lake and the weather meant we stayed out most of the time so it didn't really spoil our holiday.

Owner response: Regarding Review #4682600 “1960 Experience” We are sorry to hear that you did not enjoy your stay. We are particularly concerned that you found fault with the premises. We take great pains to ensure that the place is spotless for our guests. Prior to their arrival the place is thoroughly cleaned. The beds are standard size as advertised. So far you are the only guests that have found them unsuitable. We find your comment regarding the stair railing disturbing since we have had several guests with small children who have not mentioned any concerns with this issue. We try to provide for all of our guests needs, providing all the essential dishes, silverware, cookware, and appliances. We realize that there is a problem with the refrigerator light not working all the time. Otherwise the refrigerator is fine. This problem will be corrected for next season. The dish washer is only four years old and you are the only guests that found it inadequate. It is also unfortunate that you expected a/c since it was never advertised. We do provide fans. Most of our guests have commented that they have liked the “retro décor”. For most of them it brings back memories of 60’s and goes well with the A-frame construction. We do consider the premises secluded since the place was built in excess of a hundred feet from the road, into a bluff allowing for a larger front yard and a spectacular view. The nearest neighbors are over two to three hundred feet away and closer to the road. You are the first guests that have complained about the shower door. We will certainly look into it and replace it if necessary. We also appreciate your comment about providing a welcome pack. This is something that we will definitely consider for next season.

My sister & I rented this cottage, along with our mom, my two sons, and her son (ages 6-9). We rented sight unseen, based only on what was here online at VRBO. We had a great time! FIRST, Keuka Lake is a really cool lake. It's sort of a medium sized Finger Lake, so it's big enough to be interesting, but not so big it's overwhelming. The water was crystal clear. Second, the cottage is essentially located near the end of a 3 mile long dead-end road. It was very quiet, with only a few cars driving past. Third, the boat slip is actually a covered boat "car port". We rented a boat from Bar Bay Boat Rentals at the North End Marina, and parked it right in the slip. It worked great. Fourth, the Olin's have done a great job making sure there is everything you need. Washer & Dryer? Check. Wi-Fi? Check. Fans, in case it gets warm at night? Check. Towel drying rack? Check. Rowboat, sailboat? Check.Fire pit for s'mores? Check. Etc, etc. The cotttage is not humungous, and it was built in the 60s - the pictures are accurate. However, it was exactly what we were looking for, and we had a great week. If you rent a boat, there is a marina with a good restaurant across the lake and south about a mile or so - wish we'd discovered that earlier...we also went to the Glenn Curtiss museum in Hammondsport, and it's great if you're into aviation history.

My family and I stayed at this home for a week in July 2010. It was the best family vacation we have ever experienced. Our days began with a row boat ride on the peaceful lake, or a walk down the quiet, wooded street. Then we would hit the beach, no need to bring any chairs or water accesories, they had them all. The water depth was gradual and the children swam non stop. There is not a strong current or undertow, so I was able to relax! After swimming all day, we would spend our evenings grilling out and relaxing in the hot tub. Then we would have a bonfire! The cottage itself is spotless clean, the beds are comfortable and the kitchen is well stocked. Even a dishwasher is provided, which was a huge help. No need to bring any linens or cooking utensils. In fact, there is even laundry facilities on site! Kelly and Bill are the owners, they stayed in the cabin next door. They are very sweet and helpful. They also have a sweet, friendly dog that we enjoyed as well! If you need any groceries, the town of Penn Yan is about twenty minutes away and has all sorts of stores and icecream stands along the way. It was a nice break from the heat. Overall, our vacation was fantastic. I cannot even think of one complaint. Not even one. The only thing I would like future travelers to know is that you DO need water shoes, those zebra mussels are sharp. Also, we happened to bring goggles for the kids to use and the adults ended up using them too! There are lots of fish to see under the water, and since the water is crystal clear, you can see everything! We spent our week swimming, boating, relaxing and lauging with family. I would definitely recommend this cottage! In fact..we are already thinking about coming back next summer! It was VERY hard to leave! Have fun!
