Carrigaholt is located on Loophead Peninsula, 7 miles from Kilkee and 14 miles from Doonbeg Golf Club and approx. 50 miles from Shannon airport. The dolphin watch boat leaves from the local pier which also hosts West Clare's only fresh fish shop. Carrigaholt is an excellent area for walking, swimming, fishing, golf, good food, and drink.

A very clean new home fully equipped, with modern appliances, comfortable, with lots of room, and well located near Loophead Penninsula in a nice small town. the scenery along the coast near Kilkie puts the Cliffs of Moher to shame. Carrigaholt though small has postal service, pub, and a nice restaurant. Aine met us upon arrival, and helped us with information on the house, the area, and how to contact her. then she checked with us mid-week to see how we were doing. We spent most of our time traveling both north and south from this location to see points from Galway to Cork, Dingle Penninsula, Killarney, Cliffs of Moher, the Burren, and local shopping in small towns throughout the area. The Ferry that crosses River Shannon at Killimer was a great time saver, and another way to see dolphins and sea lions. We found the home in Carrigaholt a great value, and the owner was very easy to work with.Recommended for: Sightseeing, families with young children, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, age 55+.

We stayed at this property for the month of August and the first half of September in 2011. The house is in a development of about 20 homes and sits on a half acre lot. The site photos and description are accurate. The house has an oil furnace and a small fireplace that burns coal or peat. The Irish owner is currently working outside Ireland but she was helpful in answering all of our questions. Once we arrived at the house we met Aine, a wonderful Irish women who lives locally and looks after the house for the owner. Aine stopped by on several occassions, especially the first week, and was a fountain of information about local events, customs, and places to see. More than once she brought us delicious soda bread and pastries that she had made earlier in the day. Carrigaholt is located on the Loophead peninula about an hour and 15 minutes west of the Shannon airport. Public buses run as far as KIlrush or Kilkee. Taxi service is available in either city. You really should have a car. Many car rental agencies have offices at the Shannon airport. I used Dooley Car Hire, an Irish company, and was pleased with their service. Carrigaholt is a small, delightful, village. It has a Post Office, three pubs, one restaurant with a short bar, a fast food take out open in the evenings, a small gift/craft store, and a small grocery store located in Keene's Pub. The Postmaster (and only employee) is Patrick who can tell you lots of local lore (even though he is from Tipperary!). Ask him about the sunken ship, the battery ruins, and the abandoned light house. And stop by the Post Office on Fridays for fresh local pastries. There is no internet at the house. I did purchase a cell phone modem (vodaphone) and as long as their 3G network was operating it worked well. Unfortunately it was down at least half of the time I was there. WiFi is available at Carmody's Pub for free. Of course you should purchase a beverage. Pub Owners Mark and Ruth, and Mark's parents James and Anne were very welcoming. I really enjoyed walking into the pub and being greeted by name! Don't be shy, introduce yourself. Doolin, with ferry service to the Aran Islands is about an hour away. Ennis is a great little city to walk around. Bunratty Castle is worth a visit--go early ahead of the tour buses. Drive out to the end of the Loophead pensinsula to see the Lighthouse and the cliffs that rival the Cliffs of Moher. Visit the Carrigaholt Castle. Don't miss the SeaLyons fish shop near the Castle!Recommended for: Sightseeing, families with young children, adventure seekers, age 55+.
