Historic Beginnings

Built during the turn of the Century, somewhere between the late 1700's and early 1800's, the newly restored White Turpin House has withstood the test of time in its location across from the renowned King's Tavern in the downtown historic district of beautiful Natchez, Mississippi. White Turpin, the man after whom the house is named, served as the last Territorial sheriff and as the first sheriff of Adams County from 1812 to 1819, after coming to the area in 1808 with his good friend Governor David Holmes. This spacious cottage served as Turpin's townhouse and is now proudly owned by his gggg-granddaughter, Kendell Coney Horton and her husband Jesse, and will host as your great vacation get-a-way. Our accommodations and location make this private townhouse the perfect place for couples, families, groups, and business travelers to enjoy their stay in historic Natchez.

The 3 bedroom/2 bath house will be offered to only one family, group, or couple at a time and since the owners do not live on the premises, it will make the ultimate private getaway for visitors. As guests walk up to the house, they will be greeted by a white picket fence that is an exact replication of the original one based on pickets that were found on the grounds during restoration. The house sits up on a hill overlooking Jefferson Street with a lovely, breezy view of King's Tavern Restaurant from the porch. A swing and comfortable wicker furniture beckon guests to relax in the morning with breakfast or in the late afternoon to watch the sun set over the historic city. An equally stunning view can be observed from the roomy, fenced backyard as the steeple of the gorgeous St. Mary's Basilica reaches for the sky.

As guests enter from the front porch, they walk into a warm and inviting living room which is the oldest part of the house. The owners have created living areas that are intimate, classic, and casually elegant. Original hardwood floors, a beautiful fireplace mantle, and exposed ax hewn beams give visitors a glimpse into this home's historic past. The comfortable sofa, chairs, and furniture in this room are the perfect mix of antiques and reproductions to make this a cozy place to visit or watch the new flat screen television that tucks away into a beautiful armoire. This room is named for White Turpin's 'Oakland Plantation' which once stood in Washington, Ms. It was a magnificent plantation on which construction began in 1810 and was completed in 1813. The plantation burnt to the ground in 1896.

Another room on the front of the house is the Library/Reading Room. This special room has several features that make it unique. The drapes that adorn the windows once hung in the New Orleans Opera House. The mix of antique blues, gold, and rusty reds help to create the perfect ambience for the masculine, yet elegant setting for this room that the owners refer to as the 'Sheriff's Retreat'. A stunning oval oil painting hangs over the original fireplace. A comfortable couch, chairs, a pull out desk, and a library table make this room conducive to reading or business. We call this room the 'Sheriff's Retreat' in honor of Mrs. Horton's gggg-grandfather, White Turpin, who was the first sheriff of Adams County.

Leading off of the living room is the rustic, yet beautiful, full-service kitchen. Hardwood floors and original beams lend a timeless feel to the room. Granite countertops and brand new appliances make the kitchen convenient and functional. We refer to this room as 'The Independence Kitchen' in honor of 'Mount Independence Plantation' which was another Natchez area plantation owned by Mrs. Horton's ancestors.

Immediately off of the kitchen, a door leads to the master bed and bath which can accommodate 2 guests. This beautiful bedroom has a King-size four poster tester bed, marble topped bed side tables with lamps, a gorgeous mirrored wardrobe for hanging clothes, and a chest of drawers. Right off of the master bedroom is the master bath. It is a full bathroom with tub/shower and a pedestal sink with mirror above. The master bedroom is referred to as 'The Turpin Room' in honor of Mrs. Horton's Turpin ancestors.

Following the staircase up from the kitchen takes visitors to 2 queen-sized bedrooms and a full shared bathroom.

The Archer Room features a Queen-size four poster bed with the same high-end pillow top mattress and luxurious bedding as the other two rooms. Mrs. Horton refers to this room as 'The Archer Room' in honor of her Archer ancestors. Her ggg-grandmother, Laura Stevenson Archer, married White Turpin's son, Joseph Alexander Turpin. Laura's father was Stevenson Archer who was a territorial judge for Mississippi and on the Supreme Court of Maryland. Stevenson's father was Dr. John Archer of Maryland who was the recipient of the very first American medical degree.

The Lejeune bedroom has very old hardwood floors and a built-in bookcase. The lovely four poster bed is a Queen-size that can accommodate two people. The bed has the same high-end pillow top mattress as downstairs, as well as the same luxurious bedding. Mrs. Horton refers to this bedroom as 'The Lejeune Room' in honor of her ancestor, General John Archer Lejeune, who was the 13th Commandant of the Marines and known as 'the greatest leatherneck of all'. General Lejeune was the great grandson of Sheriff White Turpin.
