Lake Burton house description
Availability: April 26 - November 1; rental during winter on request
This unique house is located in Perrin Cove on the beautiful emerald green waters of Lake Burton. The homesite once was the location of a 1920's vacation cabin with a handsome rock fireplace. Through the years, the cabin eventually rotted away, but the fireplace remained. In 1960, the current owners discovered the fireplace and built a small but quaint cabin onto it--we call this the 'old part'. Two large additions were made to the little cabin: one for a master bedroom suite, and one for a large dining room. Also added to the grounds were a two-story garage and a two-story boathouse.
The main house itself has four bedrooms, each with a full bathroom. The 'old' part of the house has its own front porch and sitting area, and also has the original woodburning rock fireplace (there is a generous supply of wood stacked on the grounds). The 'new' part of the house has a large living room with gas logs in the fireplace, a spectacular dining room with a huge round table, large galley kitchen, large master suite, and a large wooden deck with a hot tub. There are views of the lake from the porch, deck, living room and dining room.
Down the hill is the two-story boathouse with a separate bedroom (no bathroom). Many hours can pass just sitting on the porch swings and hammock. For the more active vacationers, swimming and boating are absolutely fabulous in this pristine lake!
Up the hill is the two-story garage. A newly-built, curving covered walkway lets you escape those mountain showers during loading and unloading your car when getting from the garage to the house.
The water in Lake Burton is some of the cleanest in the state--it holds the most beautiful colors of nature, reflecting the green trees in spring and summer, the autumn hues in fall, and the bright blue of the skies in winter.
There is a pontoon boat at the boathouse. Rental for the boat is separate from rental of the house.
The area surrounding Lake Burton holds many pleasant surprises for those adventurous enough to leave the lake. Clayton is close by, and Highlands is a short trip, too. And don't miss the local places like Goats on the Roof (they really are on the roof!), The Dillard House, and the Alpine town of Helen.

Great time at the Lake on the 4th!!
Great time at the Lake on the 4th!!
What a great place for a summer vacation on a lake! Our family had a wonderful time and came away rested and relaxed. Our boys loved the sleeping loft—it gave them a “no adults” area of the house to play and sleep. There is plenty of room on the decks and at the boathouse for safe outdoor activities. I have stayed on Lake Burton for many years and even went to High Harbor camp–the house is reminiscent of the little cabins that once dotted the lake, but much larger and with lots of nice amenities. We plan to come again next year and want to stay at this house!

Owner response: You took such good care of the place we could hardly tell that anyone had stayed there--with two boys I know that wasn't easy. Thanks so much for treating it as you would your own home. Hope to schedule you again over the holiday week!
Caution! This home is not for everyone! My family and I have been staying at Lake Burton for 8 years and have stayed at some wonderful homes that have truly enhanced the tremendous pleasure we have had there. Unfortunately this home was not one of them. This home is particularly not well suited for the young or the elderly. The home's water runs on a cistern and we ran out of water on the second day. We had to "snake" the remote cistern and then haul water from the lake in order to flush the toilets and then go to town to purchase water while we waited for the water to run again. The lake is over 60 steps from the home - not good for the very young or elderly. The kitchen is a very small galley kitchen that did not accommodate our group. The kitchen microware is so old that it works by turn knobs. In order to utilize the laundry/dryer you must put the dryer vent out the back door, requiring the back kitchen door to remain open to the heat and bugs. Outside of the master bath, the bathrooms are old, dark and uninviting. The loft that is noted is reached by an aluminum utility ladder that is nailed to the wall within the master bedroom closet - not for young kids! The location and water access are ideal but overall we cannot recommend this home.

Owner response: Suitability for Guests of All Ages This is a Mountain house and is certainly not for the very elderly or infirm. It is, however, quite suitable for families and children--over the years, scores of kids of all ages have spent vacations exploring the house, grounds and lake without incident. The decor of the house is "rustic lodge", for blue jeans and bathing suits, not silk and cashmere. Steps to the Lake Prior to their committing to rent, we make sure that prospective renters understand that the house is "up the hill" from the lake and there are steps. The steps have a handrail, lights, and every 10 steps or so there is a landing. Water The renters reported they were out of water and we responded immediately. The 1000-gallon reservoir was dry by the second day of their stay--this indicates that they were using an excessive amount of water. We personally checked the system for leaks that day and also had our caretaker follow up later in the day with a re-check. We made our ATV available so they could get water from the lake for toilets until the reservoir refilled. A spring-filled reservoir fills at the spring's gentle rate of flow; it's not like a fire hose. The renters assured us they had plenty of drinking water; otherwise we would have bought water for them. Dryer Vent Renters are given an instruction sheet that explains the quirks of the house. Dryer usage is one of the items explained. Galley Kitchen The kitchen is 12 ft. long with granite-topped counters on both sides. The laundry room and kitchen were renovated in 2012 with all new appliances (range, 2 refrigerators, freezer, washer, dryer, dishwasher). We plan to create a breakfast center with a new microwave in 2014. The kitchen opens up to the living and dining rooms, making interaction easy. Loft Ladder The loft above the master bedroom is a favorite place for kids. The ladder is OSHA-approved and permanently attached to the wall with screws (not nails) at an appropriate angle. Children aged 4 and under need help going up and down. Bathrooms Each bedroom has a bath. The 3 older bathrooms have new slate floors and lodge decor; not modern and sleek, but certainly not dismal. We love our lake house and want others to love it, too. We are sorry that these renters did not enjoy its character and charm.
My family had a wonderful, relaxing visit. We loved the home and Lake Burton, and were very comfortable in arrangements. Lots of "chillin" areas to read, nap, and visit. Would recommend and will return.

Spring finally came to Lake Burton and it is beautiful. Your lake house is great--so many interesting items to look at inside and out. We built a nice fire at night in the old fireplace; it's a treasure. And the master bed is fit for royalty. Can't wait to come back!
