Wonderful Weekend in Woodstock

Guest: Terry T.
Date of Stay: 05/11/12 Review Submitted: 05/14/12

My guests and I had the most amazing time in Woodstock this weekend. The house was as we imagined, an open floor that allowed us to cook, socialize and enjoy one another's company while still having many tucked away places on the property to get away and read a book, or just go for a walk and enjoy nature. We showed up a little early and housekeeping let us unpack and get settled, they were friendly, helpful and did a great job and even provided us with some extras that we weren't expecting. Sweet Sue's is a great breakfast location just a couple miles from the house and at night we enjoyed dessert at the Bear Cafe. It was all that we expected and more. If you have the stomach for adventure try Hunter Mountain Zip lines. I watched while our guests enjoyed the adventure. There are many activities for non-daredevils like myself as well. I can't rave enough about our outing, the town and the lovely time we had at the house. Until we come again...

On Top of the Mountain

Guest: Leslie M.
Date of Stay: 04/06/12 Review Submitted: 04/30/12

Fantastic country getaway - the cool Woodstock house was gorgeous, just like the photos and fit our large family perfectly. Super convenient base for exploring Woodstock - all those quaint shops and restaurants (definitely have a dinner at the Bear - just a mile down the mountain). We loved hanging out by the fire inside and out, and walking up to the rushing creek down the hill. The kids spent hours exploring the woods on the property and playing by the water. Can't wait to take the kids back up for the fall foliage in October!

Owner response:We're thrilled you enjoyed your stay. We try to make everyone's stay as special as possible, and we look forward to your next, as well as many more visits!

Friends Weekend Away

We had a lovey stay in this wonderful home. The proprietors were nothing less than amazing. Every questions was answered immediately, and the experience on the property was superbly memorable. They allowed us to bring out little dog, Petie, which was a treat. You must have a cup of tea in the tower, it was my favorite time in the morning. Thank you.

What an amazing place!

Guest: Sally (Indiana)
Date of Stay: 10/18/11 Review Submitted: 10/20/11

My husband and I came here for the second biggest zip line in the world. We were seeking adventure and needed a place to relax. This is the place for peaceful solitude. It felt like we were staying at a friends house. I found myself wanting chocolate but not wanting to leave at night. My husband found hot chocolate in the cabinet a "left over" from guest before which is a wonderful idea. When people are leaving they leave begin things that can be used by others for sharing. The rooms were all clean and to my surprise the house smells good. I expected a muggy scent to linger around. After a long two days of hiking and adventure seeking my whole body was achy so I laid in the bath with jets on. Talk about fantastic. No staff bothered us and we had no reason to bother them. We are already thinking of our next trip and who we should invite. So happy I chose to stay here.

Owner response:Thanks Sally! So glad y'all had a great time and we look forward to your return. Have a safe travel home.

Amazing Romantic Getaway

Guest: Steve Meyers
Date of Stay: 11/08/10 Review Submitted: 11/10/10

We wanted a romantic get-away and stumbled onto this place through the website. We lucked out! The studio/barn is totally hip and nicely furnished. The coolest thing is lying in bed and looking out into the forest. It's like sleeping outside--except the bed is really comfortable. I already booked another weekend this summer. Definitely one of the nicest weekend getaways I've found!

Wonderful time at the Tower

Guest: Holli Harvey
Date of Stay: 11/05/10 Review Submitted: 11/10/10

My friend and I spent an incredibly wonderful weekend at the the "Tower" as it is affectionately called. It is really a beautifully located home, with a fantastic view near the center of Woodstock; it is on 3+ acres complete with a fire pit out the back door. Spacious and complete this is a place we want to return to again! The accommodations are not only comfortable, with everything we need to enjoy a perfect weekend, they are beautiful as well

My Third Time to this Amazing House

Guest: Dr. Hansen
Date of Stay: 10/29/10 Review Submitted: 11/10/10

We had a wonderful weekend at this beautiful and comfortable home. The owners have done a great job in making it easy for their guests. The property has an excellent location with great views. It’s isolated yet not far from town. The house has been recently renovated with very tasteful appointments. All bathrooms are spacious and the kitchen is open to the dining area. If someone has a hard time climbing stairs, these stairs aren't bad at all. We have been renting homes in the Woodstock area for the last few years, and this was definitely one of the best properties. Have already recommended to family and friends, and we would definitely go back!

Terrible Home, Terrible Service

Guest: Lisa (Virginia)
Date of Stay: 10/15/10 Review Submitted: 11/09/10

Rented this house for the weekend. It was filthy, in disrepair, and above all - there was no water for half the stay. The owner was contacted and we were told to wait it out, that the water would come back. It never did, no one came to check, it was miserable without the use of water. Owner failed to communicate any kind of resolution to our dissatisfaction. I reported them to the BBB and to Paypal for their negligence in violating our rental agreement to provide utilities for the weekend. Find a different house, your money is best spent elsewhere.

Owner response:Thank you for your note. We responded quickly when notified that you did not have water, and were informed by you that your guests took 9 baths/showers back to back while using water for dish washing/cooking, etc. As rural houses are on a well system, the water had been temporarily depleted and we walked you through what to do so the well could sufficiently recharge. This has happened to other houses in the area due to the rain shortage and lower water levels. We asked you give us a call if you had any problems to give us a call and we could send someone over to assist. It wasn't until well after your departure you informed us that you had an issue, although when housekeeping arrived, as you departed, the water was working fine. We were happy to work something however you preferred not. That said, we take great pride in helping our guests have a great stay, and haven't had an issue since your incident and now include a special note reminding guests we are on a well system and to be mindful.

Music Lives in Woodstock

Date of Stay: 10/14/10 Review Submitted: 11/10/10

Last weekend Friends and I had the true pleasure of staying in the Woodstock Stone House. Wow! It was incredible! We never imagined how beautiful the house could really be and what a wonderful weekend was in store for us. As we drove up to the cabin it was immediately clear what a special weekend we were in for. Our easy, under 2 hour from New York City Drive ended when we saw the giant Easter Island Moi and the top of the driveway. Then the house came into view. Whoa, it was twice the size we were expecting and the lighthouse tower was something out of a CS Lewis Novel! We brought our bags inside turned on the lights and were blown away again at the magnificent decoration, and great floor plan. It was a delight to explore the house; the spacious downstairs, elegant kitchen, comfortable living room, and beautiful warm solarium (perfect for breakfasts), upstairs was all deliciously carpeted in lush shaggy carpets with huge, extremely comfortable beds. My favs were the oriental style.. style day-bed and the king-bed with the mirrored headboard next to the windowed ledge. The master bathroom upstairs was ideal for relaxing at the top of the day and unwinding in the evening. The Jacuzzi jets in the tub coupled with the gorgeous views of the mountains were awesome. We were also totally delighted with the tower! The staircase circling the tower was too cool, so novel, I’ve never seen anything like it. The tower is crowned with windows for light and views and then has a full deck perfect for reading, taking pictures or watching the sunset. And I have to mention the hot-tub. The weekend we stayed was cold and snowy...perfect hot-tub weather. A short dash from the front door was the tub perfectly ready upon arrival at a wonderful 104 degrees! During the days we played games, wandered historical and wacky Woodstock, and enjoyed the company of our friends. At night we cooked lavish dinners and stayed up till dawn completely comfortable and relishing the quiet absence of of the roar of the city. Thanks so much to Cheryl and Cree. The house was beyond belief, and we had a weekend that will be tough to beat. Thanks for being perfectly accommodating and for being wonderful hosts, the rental process couldn't have been easier or more pleasant. Brett

Fold-out bed in living room was very dirty; stole my deposit and never said why.

Guest: Jamie (New York, NY)
Date of Stay: 10/08/10 Review Submitted: 05/24/11

I stayed at this place with my friends last fall and found it to be a good experience overall. One issue: the fold-out bed in the living room was full of some sort of disgusting rodent poop, rendering it unusable and two of my friends had to sleep on the floor. :( Other than that, it was okay. We left the place in good condition, spent the whole morning cleaning and then on top of that paid the mandatory professional cleaning fee. Unfortunately, my experience turned ugly when I attempted to recover my deposit which was owed back to me as per the terms of our agreement. I didn't receive any response until I got a lawyer involved, and then the owner claimed to have sent me a letter explaining why my deposit was held and explaining how to dispute it (this was false; I never got any letter). She promised to send me another letter and never did. I can't imagine why they would've held my deposit, so I'm guessing the reason owner never sent the letter was because THERE WAS NO REASON to have kept my money. So basically, this person stole (YES, STOLE) a significant amount of money from me and I've pretty much given up on ever seeing it again. It's a shame, because it's a really nice place (barring the mouse poop in the fold out bed) and I would've liked to stay there again. APPROACH THIS LISTING WITH CAUTION. In fact, I'm hesitant to rent any more vacation houses for fear I will be similarly ripped off and have no recourse (VRBO refused to help me). One million bad karma points upon you, stone tower house owner!!!'

Owner response:Thank you for your response. As documented, your security was held for the damage you and/or your group caused in the house. You were notified by letter and email and VRBO was cc'd and subsequently concurred with our position. As evidenced by our rental track record, it is a rare occasion we hold any monies from a security deposit. While we appreciate its difficult to control the behavior of all guests when groups are large, we hold our position. Warm regards, Erin

This is the best kept secret in Woodstock

Guest: kato (brooklyn, ny)
Date of Stay: 09/10/10 Review Submitted: 09/13/10

I have stayed at a lot of places in Woodstock and the tower house is by far the most amazing place to getaway. The house is unique and completely secluded. And when you go to the top of the tower (one of the best features of the house) you have a panoramic view of the mountains. Absolutely breathtaking. Everything was clean on our arrival, beds were comfortable, decor rustic and fabulous. My plan was to spend more time dining out and exploring Woodstock, but I just couldn't leave the house. I recommend the jacuzzi at night, drinking a glass of red wine, gazing at the stars.

Owner response:The pleasure was ours! Thank you for coming and there are great new thing planned for the house in the coming months.

Woodstock Rest and Relaxation

Guest: Nolaguy (New Orleans)
Date of Stay: 09/03/10 Review Submitted: 09/08/10

My fiance and our family had a wonderful stay at this amazing home. The views are simply spectacular and the cool wind while sitting in the tower was the best way to take the edge off a hot day. Our family enjoyed the open floor plan and ability to cook and chat. We opted for dinner on the deck a couple of times and it was a nice end to the day. If you love hiking and fun things to do, Woodstock is where its at! I only wished we had stayed longer so we could experience it all...next time! Thank you for providing such a wonderful place for our family. We couldn't have asked for anything more in a location or a rental. We will be back soon!

Owner response:You and your family were a pleasure to have. Please come again!

Poorly maintained property in good location

Guest: Frequent Traveler (Alexandria, VA)
Date of Stay: 08/27/10 Review Submitted: 09/05/10

The view from the property great and it has potential, but it is very poorly maintained. My family was truly pleased to find alternative accommodations during our stay as this property made it difficult to relax because there was so many things that have been neglected over the years. The issues... -- Property is absolutely filthy: (1) we passed by the property an hour early and saw the cleaning crew sitting down and watching TV, (2) dust and cobwebs everywhere inside, (3) carpet full of bugs (literally began to itch anytime skin touched the old shag carpet upstairs), and (4) wasp have found a second home in the master bedroom. -- Property is in disrepair. (1) window above the breakfast nook is completely cracked and ready to cave-in on guest (no exaggeration... had to keep everyone clear of the area for fear that the glass would fall on someone), (2) kitchen needs TLC (drawers falling out, cabinets missing doors, handles missing from cabinets), (3) washer and dryer don't work, (4) nails protruding from deck on stone tower (fixed by handyman last day of our stay), (5) open electrical connections and light switches that don't function, (6) whirlpool jets don't function on the tub, (7) rails are missing on outdoor stairs with warning to "enter at your own risk", and (8) the linens are tattered with holes, etc. --Owners are unaccountable. (1) Didn't see it necessary to tell us about the lack of a washer/dryer during our stay, (2) always used the same excuse..it was the "result of the prior tenants", (3) never offered to make things right (no discount, etc. for the non-functioning appliances, etc.), and (4) had to leave for a day because washer was supposed to be replaced (it was all for naught as we returned to the same non-functioning washer). Could go on and on...

My Favorite Rental!

Guest: HStein (New York)
Date of Stay: 07/20/10 Review Submitted: 09/08/10

I should have submitted a review in the past, but quite frankly get so busy I never got around to it. But as I have stayed at this property three times since May and have two other stays planned before the end of the year, I wanted to take the time to say thank you and express how much my family and I love this property. Our first stay was a last minute getaway and the owners jumped through hoops to get us everything set-up with only hours notice. You wouldn't know...everything was picture perfect. The hot tub was astounding, a bottle of wine sitting in the kitchen, and the house was as clean as a whistle. We loved our stay so much we decided to bring our children for the following visits so they could enjoy the great time, and a great time they had! Thank you for the past rentals and future rentals we've already booked!

Owner response:We are thrilled to have you stay as many times as you'd like!

I can't gush enough over this amazing town and property. I had a bridal shower and even though the weather outside was hot, the house was cool. The bedrooms are over-sized and each had a king size bed! We had an amazing day that was locally catered and the food was to die for. We turned down the hot tub and enjoyed a "cool pool" while outside. Later in the evening we had s'mores and more fun times. I love this house and look forward to our ski trip in February! Thank you! I knew it was going to be a good weekend, when my son got out of the car, looked up at the tower and dropped his bag of candy. The tower will mesmerize any child and adult for that matter. Taking a cup of coffee on the deck and watching the sunrise was divine! I'm looking forward to my next Woodstock trip and staying in the Stone Tower House.
