Home away from home
Home away from home
We rented Rick’s and Judy’s house from late May through late June 2012. It is Rick’s and Judy’s personal residence (except when they travel north to beat the heat). Consequently, the house is fully equipped with absolutely everything needed for a hassle free one month (or longer) vacation. We cooked most of our meals on the grill and ate at the giant bar in the Kitchen (which is the largest piece of granite we had ever seen). Although the house is older, it is has been updated and is very well maintained. Just before our arrival, Rick finished a complete renovation of the master bath. It is luxurious. The king size bed is also very comfortable. The wireless internet worked great. The landscaping is really spectacular. Unfortunately, by the time June rolled around most days it was two hot or buggy to spend much time in the garden. We enjoyed looking at it on our way to and from the dock. We towed our 20 foot boat from Virginia and kept it in the water at the dock behind the house. The dock is well designed and well protected. So, we never had to worry about the boat. It did well even in the thunderstorms. Having water and power on the dock was really helpful for boat and dive gear cleaning. The neighborhood has a boat ramp which made it easy to get the boat in and out of the water. The location of the house is great for both land and water activities. We were in the Keys to dive and got out on the reefs everyday that the weather permitted. From the house, it is a very short run through Tavernier Creek to the ocean. From the entrance to the creek, there are numerous dive sites heading in any direction. Snapper’s Ledger at Pickles Reef turned out to be one of our favorites. However, you might have to wait for a mooring at Snappers. We had very little trouble getting moorings at any other site. The Winn Dixie is only about a mile away and there are numerous restaurants heading north or south. In fact, there are several restaurants within walking distance. Can you tell we liked the place? Of course, the best thing about the place is Rick and Judy themselves. Rick was always available to answer phone calls or emails, many of which didn’t have much to do with the house but were instead “local knowledge” type questions or boating questions (he is a boat expert). While we never met Rick in person and we only briefly met Judy, they seem like old friends already. We will absolutely be back next summer, hopefully for two months.
