After reading the reviews and seeing the pictures I was very excited about staying in this lovely rental. The apartment was clean and well appointed. I am the kind of person who has a hard time sleeping in other beds, but I slept so well here. The bed was very comfortable and the room was quiet. The kitchen is fully stocked, they have everything you could need to prepare meals with your own groceries. Location is amazing as well. Everything is within walking distance, as others have mentioned. I only used my car once and that was for a wedding I attended in Goleta. Butterfly beach was a short (and beautiful) ten minute walk, as was Starbucks, Vons, and the other boutiques and shops. The French Bakery is a must. A little on the pricey side, but it's Montecito...to be expected. Turns out Oprah lives in the same neighborhood, google it :) Anyhow, two nights here was not long enough...I did not want to leave. We will definitely be returning one day. Thank you, Lisa and Peer, for making our first trip to Montecito a memorable and comfortable one!

Cozy and charming in a quiet neighborhood.
Cozy and charming in a quiet neighborhood.
My husband and I took a long weekend for our anniversary and my 30 yr high school reunion. It was just right. Cozy, with a beautiful garden to look at. We walked to the beach 10 minutes, through the "secret tunnel" and continued for an other 20 minutes along the shore to East Beach for volleyball with friends. Vons and Xanadu bakery were also a very short walk away to get our goodies and treats for the weekend. Also within walking distance are Starbucks and several restaurants. It was quiet and relaxing. Although we didn't do much cooking, the kitchen had what you would need to do that. We had lovely breakfasts and coffee each morning. The bed was remarkably comfortable. My husband, being 6'8" tall can be hard to accommodate. But it was awesome! Lisa was readily available via text for any needs or questions which were minimal. We spent the first evening perusing the collection of books that filled several shelves. They also had cable TV so we did not miss the latest episode of Breaking Bad :-) Thanks Peer and Lisa for a lovely get away!

Peaceful, charming setting!
Peaceful, charming setting!
My daughters and I had a wonderful stay in this cottage-like apartment. The place was well appointed with a spacious, fully-stocked kitchen, music, TV with movies, and a comfy bed plus a bonus office room for spillover luggage. I enjoyed doing yoga in the yard watching the hummingbirds and having my morning coffee on the chaise lounge outside. It is a quiet setting, despite being so close to hwy 101, and having a Vons nearby was invaluable. We were supposed to go out Sat night but chose to stay home and have soup and salad from Vons then curl up to watch a movie from the pullout living room sofa - perfect!

Quiet, Private and Convenient
Quiet, Private and Convenient
I selected this location based on VRBO reviews and wasn't disappointed. We came to Santa Barbara with the express intent to visit the Lotusland garden in Montecito and to attend the Earth Day Festival in Santa Barbara. My husband and I are both gardeners and having a garden outside our door made us not miss our own garden so much. I was impressed with the Camellia sasanqua and Cuphea in full bloom. Our climate in Western Washington is too cold for this kind of Camellia as their buds get blasted every year in our garden. Cuphea is strictly a summer plant for us and theirs was a huge plant in full bloom. They also had bird of paradise, ferns and a lemon tree with lemon blossoms and lemons. The apartment was just as described and as pictured. It felt like a home and we immediately settled in. My husband has a penchant for rearranging the furniture in any place we stay. He only moved one chair this time. The most important feature for us is cleanliness and this place was clean and smelled clean. We would certainly recommend it to friends and relatives. We hope to come back again. The home is located in a well-to-do neighborhood of well maintained homes and gardens. I was surprised at the number of clipped, tall hedges. My guess is that most people have enough money to hire landscape crews to maintain their gardens. Lisa and Peer were helpful when we had questions. Peer helped us get our Iphones set to their Wi-Fi. Lisa recommended the Cava restaurant and Jeannine's Bakery as good places to eat. We tried both and returned for second visits. I didn't expect that getting around Santa Barbara/Montecito would be so easy and convenient. We walked to both restaurants. We walked to Butterfly Beach and the Biltmore. I especially enjoyed strolling the grounds of the Biltmore. The gardens were immaculate and many flowers were in bloom. We could never afford to stay there but we weren't hassled by anyone for walking on the grounds. We did go back later for a drink at the bar (very expensive). We didn't have time to explore the Upper Village of Montecito. We stopped there for lunch after the Lotusland tour but then needed to hit the road for Santa Monica. For travelers interested in gardens like us, we would also recommend the Santa Barbara Botanical Garden and a nursery called Seaside Gardens in Carpinteria. They have several very nice display gardens and a large plant selection. We missed the Surfer Museum in SB. It's only open on Sunday afternoon.

My husband and I wanted a simple get-a-way weekend in Santa Barbara and very fortunately found this little gem. The location is perfect if you want to be able to walk to meals, to the beach, and "live" in Montecito for the weekend. Two favorite activities were going jogging in the neighborhood and sitting in the garden and reading. Super relaxing. However, it's also a convenient location to drive to all parts of Santa Barbara. Owners were available for anything we needed. I'd definitely recommend - great value.

What a wonderful home away from home. We could not have been more thrilled to find a true Secret Garden. Lisa and Peer were more than accommodating to make sure we were comfortable and helped us with find our way around. Peer even took Ron on a bike ride to show him the neighborhoods and hills of Montecito. We were not disappointed with our accommodations - well supplied kitchen - great bed- fluffy towels - perfectly spotless house. The garden is sun filled with 2 lemon trees, flowers and a large bird of paradise that attract hummingbirds, blue jays and a rabbit. Shopping close by (5 mins to grocery store) and the beach is a 10 minute walk away. We enjoyed ourselves so much we have booked 2 weeks for next year.

Beautiful & Relaxing
Beautiful & Relaxing
My husband and I stayed here with our 9 month old daughter for three days in February. It was fabulous- beautiful surroundings, comfy bed, & big, soft towels! There is a little study/alcove that’s not in the pictures, but it was a nice surprise and we put our pack-n-play in there which was good to have out of the way. The location is perfect- we walked to Xanadu and Jeannine’s for breakfast and it’s an easy walk to Butterfly Beach and the Biltmore. The Montecito/Santa Barbara area is one of the most beautiful places in the world, and this location allows you to experience all of it. We’ve stayed in multiple motels & hotels in the SB area, and it’s sad to think that we spent MORE money staying at those dingy places when we had a beautiful place like this for LESS! One of the best things we did was sit on the porch, listening to the CD’s provided -Café de Paris and Italian love songs- looking out over the beautiful garden, having a glass of wine—you feel could be in France or Italy. We had a wonderful, relaxing weekend and we hope to stay here again!

My husband and I had a fabulous stay here. The location is perfect. We could walk to the store, walk to Butterfly Beach and also into Montecito. We walked everywhere. We would hike and bike and after a long day it was wonderful to relax in the sauna. Great restaurants nearby from Chinese to Lucky's which we loved. A very special place and I haven't even mentioned the beautiful garden. An added plus was any visit we got from Piper, the adorable cairn who lives there. This was just perfect for us, low key, great location and Peer could not have been nicer or more helpful. Loved it and hope to visit again.

We had a very positive experience staying at Peer and Lisa's getaway. Our 4 year old daughter loved the garden and had fun exploring all the little pathways and watching for the butterflies that came to the flowers. It's a great spot for a small child. We found Peer and Lisa to be very helpful and they were always available to answer questions and provide information for local services and amenities. We are happy to recommend this property and we hope to return and enjoy it again. It is a true oasis of calm . And Piper is a sweet little four-legged person!!!!

What a great getaway!
What a great getaway!
The owners Lisa and Peer are friends, Lisa being my good childhood friend so one could say I am biased in my review. Even so, the Secret Garden has been a well spring of healing, joy, and child-like wonder through my trials, losses, and celebrations. I tell all who searching for a respite from the stress of everyday life to spend time here healing and renewing. I love it here and will always cherish my time in this very special haven. About the owner: We are a couple who love the area and love to share our special garden apartment with guests. Our friendly little dog will be happy to show you around! We live in the same house but we have a separate entrance and we rarely run into the occupants of the Secret Garden apartment! Of course, we love to recommend restaurants and special places to explore..
Why the Owner Chose Montecito:
This location is so close to everything, if you live in LA you can just take the train up and never have to drive. in our opinion, Montecito is the best place to be in this whole area, and we have lived in all parts of Santa Barbara. We call it the Carmel and La Jolla of California! It is so beautiful here. New!!! Please ask about our 2 bedroom 1 bath with art studio! Same location!
The Unique Benefits at this Apartment:
There are too many to list! To have a glass of wine and play boulle in the back yard is right out of 'A Year In Provence'. In fact, it feels very European with the furnishings and location. One of the best kept secrets is the tunnel to the beach, right down the street. It's hard to believe you are really in the heart of Montecito when you are surrounded by birdsong, owls hooting, and visually no houses to be seen because of the trees and bushes. Still, the gardener makes sure there is plenty of light to keep all the flowers and the two lemon trees healthy! Pick a fresh lemon for that lemon-drop martini- shaker and glasses provided!
