Block Island house description
Top of High Street--The house, known as the Islander, was built in 1893 and offers the charm of the Victorian era while providing the modern-day amenities expected in a contemporary vacation home. Sitting on a small rise in a quiet neighborhood at the top of High Street, the Islander is just a short walk to the closest beach, ferry dock, post office, and many of the Island's favorite restaurants. In town, you will also find a weekly farmer's market, a theatre, the library, art galleries, boutiques, as well as several book and gift shops.
The Islander is only a twenty-minute walk to the Mohegan Bluffs, one of the Island's most dramatic and popular points of interest. The Bluffs offer a breath-taking view of the historic Southeast Light as it watches over a vast expanse of the pounding Atlantic--along the Island's southern coast. Within easy access, too, are the many nature trails that criss-cross the Island.
In addition to the tastefully appointed living and dining rooms--situated for relaxing and dining comfort--there are two sunrooms offering a small book-lined study and a sitting room. The library, with its extensive selection of children's and adult books, provides another quiet corner in which to read or play a board game on a rainy afternoon.
At the rear of the house, a deck opens into a tree-filled yard capturing some of the coolest island breezes all summer long. An extension of the house, the deck--with its gas grill and built-in seating-- is a wonderful space for cookouts or just sipping your morning coffee or an afternoon cocktail.
In a private corner of the yard, there is an outdoor hot-and-cold water shower, where you can bask in streams of sunlight, while washing off the sandy traces of a day at the beach.
At the end of a day of summer fun, five cozy and comfy bedrooms offer quiet nooks--retreats in which you may enjoy a refreshing night's sleep.

We had 3 couples and 1 single stay here at the end of June. We were concerned that 2 full baths might not be enough but, with the outdoor shower, we had plenty of privacy and no waiting. The house and beds were comfortable and charming. 2 of us had to go back and forth on different days in CT and appreciated being able to walk back and forth to the ferry and into town any day for shopping and dining. The house was very quiet at night, providing great sleeping! We would recommend this home for couples with or without children. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

Year Purchased: 1993
About: We are Harold & Gloria Redlich, full-time residents of Block Island since 1994. Having come to the island for years, we found ourselves enchanted by its magic, fell in love with it and realized quickly it was the only place for us to settle after retirement from our busy lives in Connecticut. There was something magical about the Island that drew us. From its long stretch of beaches to its plunging bluffs, from its bustling little town to its hidden corners, the Island cast a kind of spell on us. The rest is our own very happy history: twenty years ago, we bought the Islander, lived in it during the year and ran it as a B & B during summers for several years. After many visitors told us they loved the house and wished to stay in it for longer than just a weekend or two, we decided to rent it. From that time on, we have seen the house fill up with many happy visitors including intergenerational families or friends sharing a vacation home. For most of the year, we live in the house and enjoy its comforts, idiosyncracies and charms. We particularly love the way the morning sunlight wraps around the eastern walls of the house, spilling in through the windows of the dining, living and sunrooms. Later in the day, as the sun begins to set, the light in the kitchen and dining rooms softens and the house fills with its own afternoon calm. Each visitor, or course, finds his or her own special features to enjoy about the house and the island. We hope our guests will enjoy staying in our home and be captivated by the special island magic that touches all who spend time here.
Why Block Island:
We chose to settle on Block Island because we wished to live in an intimate relationship with nature & we continue to do so. Our local Nature Conservancy works very hard to protect public lands here & has set aside close to 50% of the Island as conserved land. Among full-time residents of the town there is a very highly developed land ethic, which supports the work of TNC in protecting the Island, one of the twelve 'great places on the earth.' We feel priveleged to live here.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
Living on the island is like no other experience we've ever enjoyed. We are daily surrounded by the vast waters of the Atlantic--live immersed in a world of sea and sky-- and enjoy a wonderfully refreshing view of the world from 'this precious isle.'
