Quaint and charming 1915 Craftsman home with exquisite facade, designed by Julia Morgan and Edna Deakin, and registered with the Berkeley Architectural Heritage Society. Located above College and Claremont Avenues in ‘The Uplands’, on a beautiful street in the old historic Claremont Park area. History abounds in this old and well-loved neighborhood, whose entrance is flanked by land-marked lighted pillars from a bygone era, and many of the homes were designed by noted architects, such as Julia Morgan, Walter Ratcliff, and John Hudson Thomas. (If this property is unavailable, or you need two houses for a large group, you can see my other VRBO listing # 239965, which is located less than five minutes from this property.) I have two other properties in addition to these, so please inquire if you would like more information.)
From the house, you can walk to Berkeley Tennis Club, UC Berkeley campus, Strawberry Canyon Recreational Center, Claremont Resort & Spa for health club facilities, more tennis, several swimming pools, and spa. Domingo Avenue is a favorite spot with locals for Rick & Ann’s Restaurant, Peet's Coffee, & Tea, The Bread Garden, and a smattering of other stores.
Also within five minutes walking distance, are College and Claremont Avenues, and the vibrant communities of Rockridge and Elmwood neighborhoods--with abundant shopping, theater, places to eat, bookstores, and much more. The house is situated about three minutes or less away from freeway access-- (Highways 13, 24, and 580 west to San Francisco, and east to Oakland/Hayward.) There are many hidden ‘Paths of Berkeley’ that will take you on short-cuts to College Ave and other places, as well as by old historic landmarks of Berkeley
Easy access to HWY 24 and 580 and only 15 minutes to San Francisco. Many top rated yoga places within minutes of the house! Peet's and Coles's Coffee just a short walk. Whole Foods is just 5 minutes from the house, Claremont Natural Reserve and the wonderful Berkeley Fire Trial is just 5 minutes from house, providing an uphill climb rewarded by panoramic bay views. Located in the hills above Rockridge and just a few minutes walk down the hill to College Avenue! Lake Temescal with beach, swimming, picnic spots, and trails - is less than 4 minutes from house! Strawberry Recreation Center is just five minutes from house and has beautiful swimming pools in a lush and verdant setting.
Beautifully furnished and fully equipped - this charming and architecturally significant home is in a prime location! A redwood home amidst tall redwoods on a beautiful street with each home as unique as the next, and in one of Berkeley's most coveted neighborhoods!
The house has two ample-sized bedrooms, and two huge sleeping porches/sunrooms. Both upper and lower level sunrooms can be used as bedrooms, or office space if needed. Both are carpeted and have radiant heat. One has been used as office and sometimes a bedroom. One of the main bedrooms has a large separate walk in closet--some have used it as an office. There is a second closet in bedroom also. Bedroom # 2 has redwood built in drawers, cupboard, closet, and views over rear yard and Redwood trees.
Radiant heat throughout house provides clean and efficient heat, with warm floors beneath your feet. Both bedrooms upstairs connected by one large sunroom, which has doors to each bedroom. House is replete with built-ins and nooks and crannies! One full bathroom, and one guest bathroom
Kitchen is recently updated, designed by renowned architect Bennett Christopherson and has Cherry and Claro Walnut counters, custom Copper back splash by local artist, Viking stove, Miele dishwasher, and Bosch wall oven. There is also a Fisher Paykel Stainless Steel refrigerator and new Bosch washer and dryers. The heart of Redwood beams and walls of redwood provide wonderful acoustics, quiet rooms, and a warm ambience.
Dining and living rooms have redwood interior and built in bookshelves. Original fireplace has Craftsman era tile and massive heart of Redwood mantle.
House is situated on a large deep lot (approx 1/3 acre) with towering Redwoods, brick steps and level patios in rear yard, fenced-in dog run or vegetable plot, as well as level patios under Redwood trees.

I highly recommend this house!! If you are seeking a great house that has history, ambience, comfort, and charm with close proximity to UC Berkeley, Rockridge, BART, great restaurants, and shopping then check out this house. It has a warm and inviting interior with redwood paneling, plaster walls, oak flooring, wool carpeting with a great fireplace. It is tastefully furnished with new everything, including beautiful bedding, furniture, cookware, appliances (blenders, griddle, etc.), two sets of dishes, and first-rate kitchen appliances and workspace. It is located on a residential street and the neighbors are really friendly. It has Comcast cable and a 32” flat panel color TV, a large backyard in the redwoods, and lots of storage space. The owner was very kind and made me feel at home, meeting my every need during my visit. I checked out many other places but either the location or the furnishings were not first class like this one.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, sightseeing, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with young children, girls getaway, tourists without a car.

Owner info
Year Purchased: 2004
About the owner: I was born and raised in in England and Ireland, living over the years in many cities in the US and Europe. I moved to San Francisco some twenty years ago and chose Berkeley as my home. If this property is booked, or you are seeking additional space for a wedding or family reunion, see my beautiful historic 1908 Edwardian house in the Elmwood district of Berkeley VRBO # 239665. I also have two other properties in the same vicinity - please inquire for more info. Since the Claremont property is a new listing, you can also see the other one for reviews.
Why the Owner Chose Berkeley:
Berkeley is a diverse and eclectic city of great interest, with much to see and do. I love Berkeley for its intellectual power, bohemian character, curious bookstores, organic farmer's markets, colorful history (and people), Priuses and Volvos, coffee houses, organic produce, diverse restaurants, libraries, CAL campus, live and film theatres, and so much more. No matter what you are seeking or who you are visiting, Berkeley is always a hotbed of activity and buzzing with life.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
Great friendly neighborhoods! Market Hall on College Avenue! Sailing or ferries on the San Francisco Bay or visiting Alcatraz. Award-winning, four star dining at Olivetti's, Chez Panisse (Chef Alice Waters), Bay Wolf, and Citroen with many ethnic and casual restaurants along College Avenue. Local hiking at parks like Chabot, Tilden, Redwood, and Sibley. Proximity to San Francisco. Bookstores! Berkeley's Repertory Theater, Cal Performances, University Art Museum, Pacific Archive Films, CAL campus and libraries, proximity to Marin (across the Richmond and Golden Gate Bridges), and the Golden Gate National Recreation Area--for some of the best views and hiking in the world!
