Real estate agen'ts response
Real estate agen'ts response
Our agency handled the disgruntled renter. We took care of her complaint as soon as possible and the owner took care of what cat hair she complained about. Never once did she mention that she was allergic to cats when inquiring about a rental. Anyone with a severe allergy usually mentions it, so a problem can be avoided. Our office is beside our house and we advertise being available 24/7 for all of our renters because of the location but because it is beside our house doesn't make it a garage. I was unable to reach the owner the minute she called but I was able to reach him that day. She suggested that we should put her up in a bed and breakfast after she had seen and inspected the house herself. We have had other renters that were so happy with the house they stopped by our office to thank us and tell us what a wonderful time they were having.

Grandma's old house with CATS
Grandma's old house with CATS
This is someone's house (not strictly rental property - they move out for renters), and the owners have a cat(s). Cat hair all over the place. Thought renting a house that said "no pets" in a vacation area would be fine; complained to realtor (who seems to work out of a garage - didn't even have the owner's phone number. btw, Dunbar Real Estate doesn't take credit cards) who noted that that wasn't something that needed to be disclosed. Called owner myself who did finally come over and clean (but noted "well, you can't really clean up cat hair"). Carpet & furniture in bad shape from cat. Also note that it's on the main road into/out of Southwest Harbor, so quite a lot of traffic noise at all hours. Dining room seats 6, but only 4 place settings of dishes provided. (There is plenty of Grandma's fine Wedgewood China there, but we weren't about to touch that.) Two bedrooms with queen beds are ok, but third bedroom tiny, uncomfortable foam mattress on trundle bed, with stained pink foil wallpaper. Note there is no dishwasher. Given that this was a last minute rental since we were in Maine anyway the prior weekend, and the house was available during high season and inexpensive, I guess we should have wondered what was up - you get what you pay for.

Owner response: In response to the review below I point out the following: 1. The renter saw the house inside and outside before agreeing to a rental. 2. She obviously knew it was on Main St and close to village center. That is one of the attractions of the house. Families with older children love it as the children can come and go on their own. There is also a free bus that travels around the island and is handy to the house. 3. "No Pets" in the ad means that renters are not allowed to bring pets and not that pets have never lived in the house. This is common knowledge. Once moved in the renter's only complaint was about the cat hair which was handled immediately. No other renter ever complained about cat hair. 4. The master bedroom is in the back of the house and very quiet. The two upstairs bedrooms face on Main St and do get street noise. That is obvious to anyone who has checked out the house before renting which the renter did. But this is the quiet town of Southwest Harbor. 5. The photos on Home-Away website belie the renter's description. 6. Of course there is no dishwasher just as the description cites. 7. Complaining about the dinnerware when it was available but not used speaks for itself. 8. It is customary that realtors and owners of vacation rentals on Mt Desert Island do not take credit cards.
