Eagle River cottage description
The Eagle River beach house is situated on 130 feet of white sand beach on the Keweenaw Peninsula, which is surrounded on three sides by Lake Superior and located on the northwestern end of Michigan's Upper Peninsula.
The beach, part of the Great Sand Bay, extends up to the house, putting you just steps away from digging your toes in the sand. Here you can walk the beach with your coffee in the morning, go swimming in the afternoon, and enjoy a tasty dinner on the beach, perhaps enhanced by the northern lights which appear frequently. Be sure to look for the nesting pair of eagles just north of the house.
The open layout of the beach house includes three bedrooms, a full bath, a fully-equipped kitchen, and large living room. It features a front deck facing the beach and a back deck with a view of the woods.
Outside you will find a volleyball net, horseshoe pit, and grill to help your family and friends enjoy the time outdoors – plus enough sand to build any size sand castle imaginable!
There's a beachside restaurant, Fitzgeralds, just a short walk down the beach. They offer lunch and dinner and have a bar. The food is amazing for such a remote location.
We had a well dug this summer, so no more sand point and pump. Plenty of good water now. We also replaced some living room furniture. Plan for spring 2014 is to paint the lake side porch and re-seal the decks. We purchased an inflatable bed that's quite comfortable, so I can forsee folks wanting to sleep out on the porch to watch the stars, Northern lights, or listen to the waves.

My husband & I brought up my Mom, our son, and another couple, for their first visit to the U.P., & the Fall colors. We were also able to tie in our visit with MTU's Homecoming weekend and visit our daughter, a student there. The cabin was perfect! The three bedrooms provided ample sleeping space and privacy for all the adults. The family room area was very large & comfy and allowed for easy relaxing in the evenings. The location of the cabin made touring the Copper Country non-stressful and convenient, while still being reasonably close to Houghton/Hancock for the campus activities & football/hockey games. We will definitely make this an annual trip. The Lake was a bit too chilly this October to swim - even for thick blooded Michiganders...lol - but the view and the beach were nothing short of picture perfect! We highly recommend this cabin to anyone wanting to visit the U.P. - it is great!

Perfect Vacation Home
Perfect Vacation Home
We had a great time at this lakehouse! The layout of the home is excellent for larger families with kids or for a few adult couples. More importantly, the property runs right into Lake Superior. We felt as if we had miles of shoreline to ourselves. We utilized the kitchen, porch (kid's haven), the deck, and the volleyball court quite a bit along with the beach. We'd highly recommend this spot to anyone!

We spent a week at this great cottage! The pictures and description were exactly what we found when we arrived. The owners thought of everything when outfitting the place, down to a flashlight in the bedroom we stayed in,which we needed the last night we were there. A big storm blew in and the power was out for a few hours. It was pretty neat to hear thunder and rain and the waves hitting the beach. We loved every day and night we spent here and found so many things to do all around the peninsula. The firepit on the beach was really nice to sit around and watch sunsets. Sunrises were awesome, too and we saw two deer walking down the beach one morning. We would recommend seeing all the waterfalls and there are plenty. Great drive up Brockway Mountain, the view of the peninsula from the top was super! Loved walking through the Estivant Pine Sanctuary and going on the Copper Harbor Lighthouse tour!

Year Purchased: 2005
About the owner: We're graduates of Michigan Tech who love the Upper Peninsula and found ourselves returning to the area for years. When we found this cottage for sale, it took about 25 minutes to decide to purchase it. The guys open up the cottage every Memorial Day. This always involves some improvement projects and lots of card playing. In the summer, the families come up to enjoy a week on the beach when the cottage isn't rented. Again in the fall, the guys return to shut the cottage down for the winter. Each owner takes different responsibilities for the property and we want others to enjoy it as we have.
Why the Owner Chose Eagle River:
This is the largest expanse of sand beach in the Keweenaw Peninsula and the gradual grade to the lake and the slight bay makes it a superb swimming spot. We've steadily updated the cottage and are remodeling the kitchen before the 2010 season. With 4 acres of woods between the main road and the cottage, it feels like a secluded little secret. Yet, within a 15 minute beach walk, we can enjoy fine dining. With the history, topography, and recreational pursuits available in the Keweenaw Peninsula, we're never done exploring.
The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
Morning always starts off with a check of the 'Big Lake they call Gitchugumee', and a decision whether a beach walk with coffee is in order. It's also the time we most often spot bald eagles looking for their own breakfast. Based on how everyone is feeling, we either strike out on an adventure in the area, or set up camp on the beach. Music, swimming, sand castles, pick up games of wiffle ball, volleyball, or football, snacks, some decent beer, naps, catching up on reading, eagle spotting, cocktails, bonfire....it all takes place on the beach.
