Brimley cottage description
This 1940's style cabin has a very unique and original stone fireplace where you can enjoy quiet evenings around the fire inside, while watching the beautiful sunset over Lake Superior through the living room picture window. The cabin is surrounded by mature pine and picturesque white birch trees. You can also enjoy a bonfire on the beach, or a smaller campfire on the bluff overlooking the water as you gaze at millions of stars in the Northern skies. You may also get lucky and see the infamous Northern Lights dance.
There is a very large front yard that shields noise from road traffic. Off the rear of the cabin is an attached wooden deck with lounge chairs and a gas grill. The outdoor area is kept natural and hummingbirds abound. You may also see eagles flying overhead near the beach or hear an owl hoot. About 30 steps down to the beach, you will find yourself in another world. Lake Superior will look like an ocean! You will enjoy walking the beach for what seems like forever before even seeing another person. You can walk for miles undisturbed, build sandcastles, have a bonfire, swim in the cool waters, or collect the famous Lake Superior rocks. Our families have enjoyed this spot for many years. We now want to share it.

The setting cannot be beat! The lake is beautiful and our kids and dog swam almost everyday. Either go to St Ignace or Slt St Marie for groceries as there is not a whole lot in town. We did the bear farm, waterfall,Mack. Island and the Valley Camp Museum. House is well stocked with linens. We were disappointed that there was literally no tv except for dvd- not a huge deal as there is video rental at the IGA in town. Also had some confusion as a washer is listed as an amenity, but it is not in working order. This wouldn't be a huge deal, but we have young children so I ended up handwriting some things. Also there is no outside trash receptacle- which was a bit confusing. Comfortable home in a beautiful setting minus a few inconveniences.

Manager response: The listing has been updated to show no washer and dryer available. This cabin is very seasonal and having a washer and dryer on the back enclosed porch brought us many plumbing issues during winter freezes with broken pipes. There is a clothes line outside to dry bathing suits or hang up hand washed items. There is also a laundromat in Brimley and Sault Ste Marie. There is an outside garbage can that we empty weekly, or garbage can be dropped off at our home 4 miles down the road where we have very large receptacles near the wood shed where free firewood is available for bonfires. Our business card is at the cabin with our address and phone number should there be any issues. We appreciate any and all comments and treat complaints as gifts that allow us to make corrections to make your stay better.
We enjoyed our stay in this little cottage with the million dollar view. Myself and wife, our son, and his two children 6 & 11. We traveled during the day and returned at nite for dinner and the beach. We had campfires on the beach , and it didn't seem to even get dark down there. We found a stream that was recently stocked with brook trout, and we caught 14 of them , and the size was 15-17 inches. Huge!! Our 6 year old caught the 17" one on an 8 dollar Spiderman fishing pole. The fireplace was cozy and Geoge let us have all the firewood we wanted. We came a day early and George let us stay for a nominal fee. The washing machine does not work or the dryer. Pauline offered to do the wash for us, but we declined. There is a TV but it does not work unless you have DVD's with you. The photo's are accurate, and it was clean inside. There is a DNR Lake Trout station about 8 miles to the West, and you can tour the premises. They had 1.2 Million finger sized lake trout in it. Behind it is the stream where we caught all the trout. It was a lot of fun catching those trout! We liked the Soo, we gambled a little, went to Munising for the glass bottom boat ride, went to Newberry and the Grandkids got to pet the bear cub at the bear ranch, went to Grand Marais from Paradise down a washboard gravel road for 20 miles, but came to a beach with the most fantastic rocks! It was worth it. there is an Indian Cemetary that is very interesting nearby. The black flies were terrible, and we quit wearing shorts, and it wasn't bad with Levi's on. Plenty of towels and we never ran out of hot water, and we made memories for a lifetime, so beyond a couple of things, it was very enjoyable.

Excellent home by the Lake
We had a 5 nights stay here and every day we could not stop admiring the the awesome sunset, lake view and the comfort & location of this house! All the attractions of UP were just 1-2 hrs drive and once we were back in the eve, it felt home. The courtesy extended by Pauline was icing on the cake! Enjoyed everything at the house - Campfire, BBQ, Swimming in the lake, Morning walk, Tea/Snacks by the beach,.....

Manager response: It was such a pleasure to be able to share our family's cabin and the great attractions of Lake Superior in all of its moods and glory. The sunsets are really fabulous and the cool waters so refreshing for hot sandy feet. The natural beauty of Michigan's Upper Peninsula has a special attraction all its own. The peace and serenity comes not only from the lonely beaches but also from the surrounding Hiawatha National Forest. The U.P. is truly God's Country but enjoyed by people from many different states, countries, and nationalities all seeking peace and tranquility one week at a time. Please come again to Pure Michigan!

DON'T CHANGE ANYTHING, WE WILL DEFINITELY BE BACK
We caught Walleye and Perch from a friend's boat and cooked it for super. I'm sure a charter would also be fun. The Wild Bluff Golf Course opposite the Bay Mills Resort & Casino was fun to play on and you can rent clubs, etc. The Soo Locks is a fun day trip with plenty of shops for souveniers, and the Cozy Inn Restaurant & Bar in Brimley does a great fried Whitefish.

Don't Change Anything, We Will Definitely Be Back!
We have had a great week at the cabin, it is better than we had hoped. The beach is beautiful and desserted even though we were here at one of the busiest times of the year. We picked wild strawberries in the back yard, went swimming (in the freezing water of Lake Superior), played badminton, and relaxed in the sun. Perfect weather all week! The cabin has everything you need and is very comfortable. We cooked here alot, although mostly on the grill, and found everything we needed in the kitchen. Don't change anything, we will definitely be back! Our three dogs also had a great time.

A Family Treasure We'll Remember Forever
What can we say except "thank you" for our week here. It really was just the kind of week up north we were looking for! The cabin is cozy and inviting-and just big enough for our large family(8). And what an amazing view of lake Superior - even from the windows of the cabin! Our week started in "summer"-warm & sunny and Whitefish Bay calm & inviting. I and the kids went for a swim in the crystal clear waters and came out feeling so refreshed and clean! We ended the day with a sunset & fire on the beach without another soul in sight! (OK we had oneneighbor who walked by...a friendly guy to the west of you.) Monday we went to Tahquamenon Falls - it was warm and sunny - just perfect! Then, it began to storm & winds to blow. Pauline, you warned us how quickly it can change. But it was beautiful - thunderstorms, white caps - huge waves like the ocean, so amazing! The next few days we snuggled into the cabin, read books, played games, and let life slow down. Fall had seemed to come... We enjoyed it so much here. Thank you for sharing this private beautiful gem with us! I have to say the highlight was singing together around the fire and feeling God's Presence and Peace'''a family treasure we'll remember forever. Thanks for the homemade specialties... thanks for letting us pick some apples... We sure hope to come back again! Blessings to you.

Great Vacation!Guest comment entered by manager
From the moment we turned in the driveway we knew we picked the right place. We did hours of online searches, rental properties on 3 Great Lakes, as well as a couple inland. We chose wisely. From the onlline pictures we thought we would have privacy with no view. THANKS George for cutting some trees down! Now this place has both. We took some day trips to the falls and "the shallows". Both were nice but we felt better when we could relax on our beach. It seriously was our beach, in the whole week we saw 5 people walk past!!! We're not sure who liked it more, us or our frisbee-loving dog. Thanks for sharing this place with us. GREAT VACATION! We were also fortunate to see the Northern Lights on our last night. They were incredible!

My husband and I both have very stressful jobs. Staying here brought us a great deal of needed peace. The beach is exactly as shown in the pic and was quite deserted. We had the beach all to ourselves for the entire week. We only saw a few people now and then. Please note that there are 30 steps leading down to the beach from the cabin, but they're not too difficult to maneuver. There's a nice view of the lake from the back of the cabin. The cabin was just as described with new tongue and grove pine in the bedroom and bath. It smelled and looked clean. It's cozy and comfortable. We enjoyed hiking and biking Tower Road, which is near the Mission Cemetary. We also greatly enjoyed the Dancing Crane Coffeehouse. Their coffee is fantastic and they have free Wifi. They gave us some great suggestions regarding where to hike/bike in the area.

Manager response: Such a positive response from a renter is tremendously appreciated and makes all the renovation and cleaning worth the huge effort we put into this rental unit. We are happy when our customers are happy and pleased to hear from them.

summer vacation 2010
summer vacation 2010
This was supposed to be our summer vacation 2010. We wanted to rent this cottages for 2 full weeks. Unfortunately it turned out, that the cottages was in such a bad shape and in such a dirty condition, that we left the same day we have arrived. The master bedroom smelled like rotten animals. Maybe caused by mice or rats who died after eating the poison under the bed. Windows were broken and only fixed with tape. You can't even open the windows. Dead flies and spider webs all over the place. The grass was 2 feet high in back yard (ok, owner said they like it natural). This cottage is simply not recommendable and should not be listed on vrbo. The curator (lives a few miles down the road) by the way was very nice and friendly. He gave us almost all the money back without discussion. The rest is still pending but we are very confident that we'll get it back as well. The beach was very nice, but the way down there is challenging. We can not recommend this cottage. It needs some serious updates and cleaning.

Manager response: Serious updates and cleaning have been accomplished. Two families have since rented the cabin and been very satisfied even wanting to rent again next year. Much was accomplished. Old plaster ceiling was torn down (chipmunk nest removed) and new cedar tongue and groove was put up on the ceiling and walls in the master bedroom as well as new windows in this room and the kitchen. All interior doors and frames were painted (bathroom, both bedrooms, and hall). New cedar shingles were put on the outside front of cabin. Prior to these Spring updates, last Fall new floor tile was put in the bathroom and the kitchen/dining area, and brand new bathroom fixtures installed (sink, toilet, tub surround). This fall we plan to do more. We hope to be able to replace the 25 year old steps to the beach to make them more safe and include a hand rail and landing half way down the 38 steps. We also will replace the window in the 2nd bedroom and put in new flooring in the living room. Future rental income will be reinvested to accomplish all this. It is now sparkling clean and smelling good with fresh breezes coming thru the new windows. We are asking new guests to please submit comments.

Year Purchased: 1985
About: My husband and I used to camp in remote areas usually at Federal campsites. We camped in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan on the shores of Lake Superior at the primitive Bay View Campground in Hiawatha National Forest and were mesmerized by the area. We looked for a place to buy to enjoy as our own retreat as we aged. Our Hiawatha House became our haven away from the busy metropolis we lived in near Detroit. It has inspired my husbands music and restored my soul with its peace.
We bought this with the full intent to use it only for family. Things change and we are not able to come as often to Hiawatha House. To continue to maintain and update it we decided to share our piece of heaven with others and allow it to become a seasonal rental cottage managed by my sister and brother-in-law. They now live only four miles down the road from it and also have a year round Lake Superior Beach House rental listed with VRBO. They encouraged us to list.
The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
The clean air and waters of Lake Superior are like no other. You can walk on the beach and not see another sole for a mile. The nearby Hiawatha Forest roads and trails are awesome and the great pines, oak, and birch are grand. Many sites to see in just a short one hour or less drive in any direction include: two lighthouses, Shipwreck Museum, Tahquahmenon Falls (2nd largest falls in USA after Niagara Falls), the Soo Locks in Sault Ste. Marie, Canada, Mackinac Island, Oswald's Black Bear Ranch in Newberry, three casino's, golf courses, Native American reservations, Overlooks and Scenic Byway Lakeshore Drive along Lake Superior, City of Sault Ste Marie is one of the oldest cities in America, antique shops, Native American Pow-Wows, berry picking, hiking, hunting, walking, bicycling, kayaking if you own one. Clean pure Michigan water and air!
