Rustic for Sure
Rustic for Sure
We planned on staying at HH for a weekend while visiting our freshman son at VT. We did not stay for more than one hour because we felt uncomfortable. We were lucky enough to find a hotel in town where we could have our dog. It made for an expensive weekend visit but was worth our peace of mind. When I emailed the owners to let them know we would not be staying at their home, they were more concerned about a refund (which I never even asked for) than why we left. We have rented in the US and Europe with VRBO and have had excellent experiences but never have I had such an experience. It should have been a dead give away when I read through the very lengthy, convoluted and heavy with renter responsibilities paperwork. This property states that it is rustic and on the road and yes it is - it is right on the road. The windows in the home have been replaced and are in great working order - the kitchen was large and game room could be a fun place to hang but.. the stove and bathroom were both a bit sketchy, the front door has what appears to be single pane of glass - it rattles a lot when you open and close the door making us both feel uneasy. (I believe the back door was the same but can't recall for sure.) If you had someone sleeping in the front room on the sofa bed they would hear a lot of noise. There is a train track nearby. It is behind the property located across the street and yes, you can hear the train although we're not sure how often it runs. Something I didn't realize (probably my error) was that the beautiful New River is not at all in view from the house. The walk to reach the New River Outfitters with fire pits, raft rentals, etc... might be difficult without walking on the road which is a well traveled, windy road. The back yard was in rough shape. I wasn't comfortable walking our dog back there. The home inside was clean and the master bedroom would have been fine for us although the bed was very squeeky. The second bedroom only holds a bed so don't plan on moving around at all in that room. There is no third bedroom as VRBO profile indicates - the futon is in the game room in back of the house. I knew the home was rustic and have camped in cabins at various state parks before so rustic I can do. Feeling uncomfortable and having the owners respond so curtly when we told them we would not be staying at their home was unfortunate.

Charming Spot to Get Away...
Charming Spot to Get Away...
I stayed at the property for the VT Spring Football game - if only our Hokies would perform as well as this property! Let me begin by saying this is a special property. It is not a hotel, it's a cabin in the edge of the woods. There is a beautiful creek babbling right along the house, which can be heard from any open window. The New River is about 100 yards away, so great tubing and river fun is easily accessed. If you want to bike, do motorcycle tours through the mountains, or fish/kayak/tube, then this seems like a perfect spot. Easy access to 460 and Prices Fork Road. Most cell phone carriers have limited service along the River, but after you sit on the porch a few minutes and learn to turn off and relax the environment is contagious. The sunsets across the road are beautiful! The living room is outstanding - two comfy couches, two recliners with a wood stove insert into the fireplace. Everything was clean and neat - pretty much exactly as pictured on the site. The master bedroom feels warm and cozy. The second bedroom is smallish but great for children. A nice TV and Wii kept my children happy in the evening - bring a few DVD's or Wii games to supplement the Owner's collection. The owner was quick to provide the paperwork and detailed instructions on how the unit was set up. We followed her directions and had no issues. We were expecting a bad sulfur smell from the water from our contract, but it wasn't very noticeable at all. All financial transactions were handled quickly and to our satisfaction. I recommend Hokie Hideaway for pretty much anyone looking to enjoy the outdoors along the New River. It's great for VT functions as well - far enough away from Blacksburg to avoid the crowd, yet close enough to be there in 15 minutes. Great location for game weekends! I would caution anyone that has asthma or allergies associated with being outdoors.

Owner response: THANK YOU for staying at HH, your wonderful posting and am so glad you enjoyed your visit here! Come again and tell your friends! HH admin
The Hokie Hideaway is unacceptable as a rental unit. Note that the photos principally show the outside of the home and environment. There is a reason for that. You wouldn't stay here if you saw photos of the bedrooms and bathrooms. We were told that the unit sleeps eight on four queen beds (one sleep sofa, one futon). Note that there is no dimension or picture provided for the second 'room'. The queen bed barely fit in the room, there was no room for luggage, space to change clothes in private, or closet. The room might as well have been a closet. The privacy of rooms is provided by drapes (including the bathroom!). Didn't see that in the pictures either. The flooring is bare wood in some places (and I'm not talking about nice hardwoods). Finally, the odors were offensive. I was informed in the contract of potential sulfur smell from the well water. I'm familiar with that as I have a house on the lake that uses well water. The odor was not from sulfur; it smelled like urine according to the two woman in my party. They refused to sleep in the unit and indicated they were sleeping in the car. Not exactly the 'warm and cozy' setting we were expecting for the same price as a fine hotel in downtown Washington DC. We immediately left the premises and obtained alternative lodging. Save your money and stay in a fine hotel in Christiansburg (indeed nice hotels are cheaper!). That is what we ended up doing. Note also that I paid with a money order (foolish me) in order to save a few bucks. God how I wished I had paid with credit card. I would have refused payment. The owner has denied my request to refund the money and I have no recourse ... except to let you know the mess you're getting into if you book Hokie Hideaway.

Owner response: This renters comments are erroneous and defaming. He made up excuses to get out of his reservation because he had 3, yes, 3 other reservations for VT grad weekend which prohibited other families from renting my place (he was called first on my waiting list) or other hotels. HH has NEVER gotten bad reviews certainly not for what he is claiming. This renter did not follow the HH Agreement to notify me of any issues, he waited a few days to email me. They drank the wine we left for them and used my glassware and left the dirty glasses in the sink, used the bathroom and shower so they basically 'stayed at HH'. We were in discussion and fact finding about this but he felt the need to defame me and HH here in the mean time. DO NOT BELIEVE WHAT THIS RENTER REPORTED. He used my place then 'scammed me' to try to get out of paying for my place and went to one of his other reserved locations. There were visitors at HH right before and after their reservation that RAVE about HH and I was there myself for spring football weekend and these issues certainly did not exist then or now. So be it!
Cozy and comfortable
Cozy and comfortable
We rented the Hokie Hideaway with friends this past weekend. The house is a wonderfully rustic getaway, with all the comforts of home (e.g. central heat/air, a fully-functional kitchen, a charcoal grill, and a nice fireplace). The kitchen opens to the dining area which has a big table with a cute bench. Our kids loved the bench! We spent most of our time hanging out in the large kitchen which has seating around a bar, and in the living room which has seating for eight. The house is cozy, but easily accommodated our party of eight with two queen beds, a pull-out sofa, and a futon. The house is close to a number of activities. We walked to the river at the New River Junction (a popular tubing and camping spot) so that our kids could run around, throw rocks in the river, and watch trains go by. We also spent a day hiking the Cascades. One thing to note, for the urban-at-heart, is that the house has well water. We were fine with it, but urbanites might think the water feels/smells/tastes slightly different. Not an issue at all; just something to be prepared for if you've never experienced it. We had a wonderful stay and look forward to visiting again in November!
