I had the pleasure of staying in this lovely cottage recently. It was perfect in every way. The owner, Henry, has an eye for detail. The amenities were truly special from the well stocked kitchen to the linens. This cottage is in a lovely neighborhood, convenient to the interstate as well as local restaurants. I particularly enjoyed The Refinery, a wonderful farm to table restaurant. Henry is a most charming and knowledgable host. And did I mention, Marie, the resident massage therapist? Absolutely divine. I am looking forward to visiting again and would recommend the cottage wholeheartedly.Owner response: Many thanks for your review. So happy we met upon my return from consulting in Charleston. Look forward to seeing you again.

We had a wonderful stay in your very nice Hansel and Gretle house. To be in the middle of Old Seminole Heights was a great experience. Your information in the books you make available as well as conversations with you gave us a good plan for the possibilities to go out and explore Florida. It's been very nice talking with you at the end of the day or as we leave in the morning. We enjoyed the extras in the house, the nice bed, the cooking and the big organge (dutch color) beach towels. Thanks you Marta for making us feel at home in such a clean house. And last thanks for Thomas, the cat.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

Thank you so much Henry for sharing your precious cottage with us. We were so happy and serene here that we've decided we would love to have a Craftsman cottage! So we bought a home in the area until our dream is hopefully fulfilled. We had all the amenities and then some. Great location. We loved sharing with you and wish we had more time. Our son's wedding was blessed and so were we to stay with you for two weeks. Will send you pics. Hope to return. Loved your kitty and the geco lizards.Did you find this review helpful? And each evening to come back and relax and sink into a wonderfully comfortable bed at Erehwon Retreat. Life doesn't get better than this. Thanks for a wonderful stay! We definitely appreciated all the special amenities and attention to detail to make our stay so comfortable. All was immaculate and in your absence Henry, Marie and Marta made sure we were well taken care of. The information in the cottage and your welcome book for restaurants, trails etc were SO complete. It was certainly convenient to our daughter as well. We enjoyed the quiet, laid back neighborhood and some wonderful walks. All the pictures from home in Indiana showed lots of snow! So it was wonderful to enjoy Tampa weather. Only place we've ever stayed with a stocked refrigerator and all the extras in the cabinets. Forgot to mention how awesome the bedding and towels were!!!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/1

My husband and I wanted something different for lodging on this trip to Florida and we found it. The cottage is a small relaxing haven with all the amenities we needed, Dvds, large soft towels, travel guides, and free coffee. The kitchen include a cook top, microwave and a French press for morning coffee. We enjoyed a relaxing breakfast every morning while planning our day's activities. The bed was luxurious. The location is an old urban city neighbor with dog walkers, a local park and restaurants and easy access to the expressway to see all that Tampa has to offer. Henry provided tips on the best places to eat and we were not disappointed. I highly recommend this little cottage for a great getaway experience.Did you find this review helpful? My father visited for Thanksgiving and stayed at the cottage, which is near my home in Tampa. The cottage was clean, comfortable and well appointed. The kitchen was both well equipped and spacious enough to have others over for a meal whether prepared on site or brought in. The outside space was nicely landscaped and peaceful. The location was great: easy access to major roads, close to downtown, near to shops, restaurants and great walking in the surrounding neighborhood. Henry made us feel very welcome and was extremely patient and accommodating while we sorted out arrival and departure dates! We thought it was an excellent value and would not hesitate in recommending this great cottage to friends and family! Thanks again for the memorable holiday weekend.Did you find this review helpful? Erehwon Retreat is a true gem in the center of the historic Seminole Heights neighborhood of Tampa. Owner Henry Young has captured the nostalgia of the 1920s bungalow lifestyle while providing the modern conveniences that we have come to expect in making our travels easy and enjoyable. I loved the dark roast coffee, French press, and breakfast items - very nice touch for those of us arriving late at night. A true home away from home, this immaculate cottage is cozy and gorgeous in every detail. The property is lush and quiet, but it is centrally located near restaurants, downtown, the local universities, area beaches, and other attractions. The beaches of West Coast Florida are a true treasure - and there are plenty of oversized beach towels to gently nudge you to Honeymoon Island, Captiva, or St. Pete Beach, my personal favorites. A quiet night in is also possible thanks to the cottage's full kitchen and modern appliances, eclectic collection of DVDs, free wifi, and a comfortable living room and front porch for relaxing. I hosted a small gathering of local friends during my visit and we were all quite comfortable mingling between the kitchen and living room with our snacks and wine (they were all equally impressed with the cottage). Best of all, Henry is not only a gracious host, but a wonderful conversationalist and valuable source of local information, no matter your interests. His cat Thomas (he doesn't come inside the cottage) is equally erudite. I give a strong recommendation to stay here whenever your travels take you to the Tampa Bay region and you are looking for something truly unique. --Did you find this review helpful? We anticipated our stay at ErehwonRetreat from the moment we booked it. Our every expectation was met. Leslie and I are not hotel or resort travelers, we enjoy staying in neighborhoods and getting to know an area. This find of fine accommodation is exactly what we love. From the awesome historic area, to the small businesses, to the natural beauty of the region, our senses were sated! A couple of highlights: Lettuce Lake Park is great with miles of nature trails and a cypress swamp board walk. The Independent is a great place for a local or craft beer and within a few blocks of the cottage. Ft. DeSoto & Honeymoon Island State Parks are well worth the price of admission. The Sunday Drum Circle at sunset at Treasure Island is quite a spectacle with folks of all ages and walks of life! Especially, we enjoyed and thank our marvelous host, Henry - yet another treasure to Old Seminole Heights. ThanksDid you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 2/2

Wow..I am so glad that we found your cottage on Homeaway and that I cancelled our prior reservation. This has been just what we had hoped for. Super clean, great location, and a friendly, hospitable owner. Everyday that we returned to Erehwon we felt instantly relaxed and at "home." Its so peaceful here and all of the thoughtfulness in the details was very much appreciated by the both of us. I also had the pleasure of meeting Marie and getting one of her incredible massages! Our conversation during the massage was also a lot of fun:) Henry you've truly thought of everything from chocolate on the nightstands, robes, slippers, to generously stocking the fridge and use of the laundry facilities. Thanks for all of your recommendations that you made, they were excellent. LOVE Taco Bus! Thank you also for your extreme kindness and for having such a wonderful retreat available. We enjoyed our stay immensely and hope one day to return.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 5/5

Situated in a lovely historic neighborhood, surrounded by lush Florida vegetation- beautiful vines, Spanish Moss hanging from the trees, and plants that we in Seattle try to keep alive inside our houses grow wild everywhere. The cottage itself is picture perfect and extremely comfortable. The attention to detail was truly impressive. Fluffy towels, robes, slippers, eye-makeup remover... The list goes on. The kitchen was thoughtfully stocked and the cottage had the best collection of dvds.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 5/5

Erewhon was an excellent base for us. Erewhon can boast of a numerous golf courses in Tampa Bay, many of them within less than 45 minutes drive. We felt very comfortable in the cozy little cottage. Having had similar kinds of accommodations in other countries I must say many things were above my expectations: kitchen:cupboards filled with spices, pasta, coffee, tea. Fridge with milk, butter, fresh Florida juices. Bathroom delights: makeup remover and cotton swaps. Even towels and bed linens whee changed as in a 5 star hotel.Did you find this review helpful? Our two stays at the cottage have been very good and I would recommend staying at Erehwon Retreat. The cottage is immaculate! Thanks for putting in the new floor in the bathroom since our May 6-14, 2011 visit, it is great. This was our first experience using the French Press Coffee maker and Henry has all the instructions to make great Starbucks coffee. I love the Seminole Heights neighborhood with the tall oak trees draped with Spanish moss line and canopy the streets. On a hot day in Summer I walked around the neighborhood and enjoyed my day under the coolness provided by the beautiful trees. We enjoyed the Harry Potter movie in the IMAX Dome at MOSI [Museum of Science & Industry] - something for everyone to enjoy (www.mosi.org.). We enjoyed some good food at these interesting places: Colombian Restaurant Seminole Heights 6416 N. Florida Avenue Arco Iris Restaurant - Cuban Cuisine, 3328 West Columbus Drive, Tampa Acropolis 14947 Bruce B Downs Blvd # 100, Tampa - great salads - Greek Food Mauricio Faedo's Bakery Seminole Heights 5150 N Florida Avenue -- great bread & guava turnovers/treats Our main reason for the trip is ballroom dance lessons with Chris Skates and Kathryn Schaeffer - champion dancers and instructors at Rhapsody Ballroom in Temple Terrace. Besides enjoying Seminole Heights area we enjoyed ballroom dance lessons, movies in the IMAX Dome, good food, and Henry's hospitality. Oh, and Thomas showed up to say hi a couple times to make my day!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 11/11

We stayed during a combination business trip and get-away. The cottage is in a very cute neighborhood. It is is amazing shape, clean, and everything that we could have wanted including several items in the refrig were provided. Henry was wonderful he was a great resource for local gyms, restaurants, and other attractions. The home is just a bit north of downtown and easy to reach downtown Tampa in 10 minutes even at rush hour. We were very happy with all aspects of our stay and hope to return again in the future. Would recommend completely to anyone.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

The Cottage is part of a two building residential grouping with Henry officing in one building and renting out the other two. The Cottage is the smaller unit and is fully self-contained with bedroom, bathroom, kitchen and front room. None of the rooms are exceptionally large but they are quite sufficient for two persons. The unit is very well appointed including personal art work touches by Henry. Appliances and cutlery, etc. are first class if you want to eat in. The location is in an older part of Tampa, quite close to a freeway which we used to get us into town or to the beaches. It is a very quiet site with many birds in the area. Henry was there to make suggestions regarding what we should see (being our first time in Tampa) and where we should eat. Would suggest you follow his suggestions as we did and were never disappointed, especially including a local Mexican restaurant which was outstanding and at local prices. We were there for 6 nights and left reluctantly to continue our trip. With the personal touch which Henry offers (when asked) and on a value for money basis, you cannot beat this spot.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 7/7

My husband and I recently stayed in the cottage at the Erehwon Retreat in the historic Old Seminole district of Tampa. The neighborhood was full of 1920's bungalows and some really good restaurants nearby. Starbucks was located a few blocks away and made for a great walk first thing in the morning. Accessibility to major highways was convenient and, while nearby, there was no highway noise. The owner was most gracious and the accommodations were charming. We usually choose a different place to stay in Florida each year, but we are leaning toward going back to Erehwon Retreat again. It felt like a week of making our home in Tampa instead of being on vacation, it was very difficult to go home!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 9/9

Thank you for going out of your way to order a new book on bike trails in Central FL. While we were here we cycled over 320 miles. Our favorite were Withtacooshee, Pinellas & Flatwoods trails. In spite of the cold spell we hit visiting Tampa and St. Petersburg, we saw what we came for, and at the end of the day it was nice to go back to your cottage and enjoy the "hominess" of Erehwon. It was so nice to get up in the morning and enjoy your "Henry special" coffee piping hot from the french coffee machine. In the evening, tasting various teas from the selection you provided. It was a short visit, but we will remember fondly Erehwon an its quiet surroundings. When you feel at home, there is nothing else you need! We felt really welcome.Did you find this review helpful? The minor disappointment was the freezer capacity (Proprietor Note Hilo Hotel Refrigerator.) Thanks for putting such a unique place together and letting me share it. The cottage meet all our expectations and more! The pictures and descriptions are exactly as stated and while we did not get to meet Henry, our host, (we are looking foward to meeting him next time!) we did get to meet Thomas and of course Marie. Marie is not only the care taker of the cottage when Henry is away, she will become your care taker! Marie was there when we arrived, showed us all around the cottage (there was also a detailed letter from Henry to explain eveything) and when we found out she was a Massage Therapist, we scheduled a wonderful massage that we so enjoyed, we had another before we left! When you go to Tampa it should be the only place you consider, it will be the place we come back to in the not too distant future! Be sure to treat yourself to Erehwon and don't forget a Massage!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, girls getaway, romantic getaway, sightseeing.
Owner response: Ahh, Kathy, I see you posted once on VBRO and once on Home Away. Thanks for the extra effort to express your satisfaction with Erehwon.

Erehwon Cottage is a perfect place to stay! We spent 5 nights there and felt safe and comfortable. It is in an excellent location for all the attractions Tampa has to offer and it was a wonderful "home" to come back to each evening. We did not have the opportunity to meet Henry, but Marie met us and made sure we had everything we needed, including a great Massage. She is an excellent and talented Massage Therapist and we so enjoyed our massage on our second night, we had another the night before we left! Make sure you treat yourself to this special place!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, girls getaway, romantic getaway, sightseeing.
Owner response: Kathy, Thanks for the review. Sorry my consulting took me out of town, particularly given our common interests. Looking forward to your return visit in April. Marie is honored by your review.

The Tampa area has so much to do that we really didn't spend much time in the cottage, although I would have liked to do so. The cottage is charming and comfortable. The bed was wonderful; I don't think I've slept so well on my mattress at home. The neighborhood was quiet, but so close to everything - it was ideal. Henry is a most gracious host, so helpful and interesting. Thanks for everything, Henry!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, romantic getaway, sightseeing.
Owner response: Teresa, A pleasure to have "real culture vultures" visiting. So impressed to see where all you got to visit and delighted that you loved the Ringling Museum in Sarasota. Hope you enjoy my restaurant suggestion for your next visit to Amelia Island. Best to Ken.

My daughter and I found the cottage to be close and easily accessible to the City of Tampa where she was beginning college. Being distanced from the hustle & bustle of Tampa, Erehwon provided a more relaxed environment in which to stay. Kitchen facilities are always a plus when staying away from home even if they are only used for simple breakfasts. However, Erewhon was stocked such that we could have made elaborate meals if we chose to do so. Further, though we didn't use the laundry facilities, I felt that the availability was an added bonus. The cottage was comfortable, very clean and well-maintained. We had everything we needed, and more, for our stay.Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, girls getaway, romantic getaway, sightseeing.
Owner response: Thanks for your review Paula. Absolutely delighted to have you and your daughter visit. It's clear she will be an outstanding addition to the incoming freshman class at University of Tampa.

It is all the little extras you include that makes Erehwon so much more than a turn-key rental. What a pleasant experience. Thank you for your hospitality.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 14/14

Under the overarching trees, sun-drapped where colors roll out complementing each other like music notes Where necessities and romance contemplating on each other merge into a dialogue, prolonged, rippled by the breeze The long lost fine-winged descending comes back to visit the living, lines go surely framing views The viewer turning around becomes a picture within the frames, objects murmur each finding its quiet spot. The cottage is dreamingDid you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 11/13

There is a thoughtfulness reflected here that lends itself to the aspect of ourselves that calls on us to rise to our better and higher aims and bends itself to a personal and yet universal sense of humility and gratitude. I expected this place to suit me perfectly and it does. Erehwon is a magical place. It it a homey place. It is a little miniature house. It is a safe place, a quiet place, and a place where a person can rest, relax, recharge or simply be based and race about from knowing that upon return Erehwon awaits. It is a refuge from the chaos. It is an oasis amidst the madness. I feel that the setting alone, the old trees, old houses, old part of town, funky street life, proximity to everything and every place a visitor to the area would want to get to - makes this retreat truly that a more.Did you find this review helpful? Discovering this idyllic cottage in the heart of one of the most hip-funky sections of one of the most delicious cities in the US was truly as satisfying as waking up to find your dream come true after years of living in a desert and only imagining the paradise. Simply put, it is the best place to stay in Tampa. It may well be my favorite place I have ever stayed. I cannot wait to go back. The proprietor knows how to read his guests well and that makes for each guest having his own version of red carpet rolled out. I felt practically like family. The place was spotless. The neighborhood, beautiful, and to walk it is to wander through a novel. When it comes to any museum or sight or restaurant recommended by the man, take his advice! He does his homework and he shares his wealth of knowledge. It is a tiny bit of a charmer's hut but first class in every respect. A mansion could not give you more of anything except space. I am longing to be there now. So, don't take my dates! There is only one dream-escape, utopian Erehwon in Tampa and I want it all for myself!!!!Owner response: Too too kind, so happy that you are looking for new dates. But we're booked solid til mid March at this time.

What a beautiful, serene place to have spent part of my vacation. The place is immaculate in vision and surroundings. The perfect host for questions and information on not only the cottage and the surroundings but also a plethora of information on many subjects. I was intrigued regarding the info on the big house. Everything was interesting and beautiful down to the tiles on the fence--what an amazing idea. Inside every comfort you could ask for and the bed just enveloped you for a great nights rest. The beach is not very far and beautiful for a sunset! I recommend this property highly to anyone who wants not just a place to stay but actually an experience. It is a very clean, wonderfully furnished, renovated cottage that is simply wonderful. And don’t forget the egg poacher!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, romantic getaway, sightseeing.
Owner response: Bettye, Enjoyed your visit. Thanks for the review. Marta, Erehwon's housekeeper will appreciate your compliments.

I was there in the spring of 2010 to study for and take my pathology boards...it's quiet, and incredibly comfortable. Henry has led a very interesting life and has some great stories to tell. There is no better place to stay in Tampa... it's close to everything and the bed is more comfortable than my own. There is a lot of thought put into every detail of the cottage and it shows. I look forward to visiting again!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, tourists without a car, romantic getaway, sightseeing.
Owner response: Dear Dr., Many thanks for your comments. It was very nice to have you at Erehwon for your Pathology Board preparation and examination. You worked steady and hard but very happy to see you got the beach at the end of the afternoons and that the deck and front porch were so conducive to concentration. Look forward to your return visit.

Unedited Transcript from note left in cottage by Laura and Tom, Columbia, MD: "Thank you for the pleasant conversations, advice/coaching re: financial planning. We'd enjoy following through on such rich opportunities. Our only regret is spending so little time here. We would like more walking around the neighborhood, more time at the juice bar (one block away), more sleeping in, more quiet time and more writing time. We'd also have more meals made here. As it has been, we had both dinner and a breakfast at the magical Mexican, Taco Bus! Great food highly sought after. Tom and I hope to be back soon to visit with you and Thomas. We love the nautical images, clean lines and trim, and the pottery!"Owner response: Laura & Tom, I genuinely appreciated your suggestions for the cottage, yes, we've added all your suggestions. Great conversations. Look forward to seeing you soon.
