This home, originally built in 1848, has been brought up to date in a most lovely way. A generous entryway leads you into the front parlor with a sitting room which then opens into the family room. In the center of all of these areas is a two-sided fireplace. The house is beautifully is light-filled from windows that allow views of the gardens and back yard. The open floor plan also connects to the new, freshly updated gourmet kitchen gleaming with high-end, stainless steel appliances. In the kitchen, there is a long, wooden antique table from the 1800s that seats 8, as well as a side counter bar with 2 industrial stools. There is also a wooden table in the sitting room that seats 4, so in total, there are 12 formal seats for meals. (The smaller wooden table can be moved into the kitchen if requested.) A laundry area with washer /dryer is on this level and beyond that there is a seasonal room. In summer, it can be used as a bonus room with TV, games and a place for an overnight guest to sleep. In winter, it is used as a mudroom for your outdoor gear. One of the two full bathrooms is also on this ground floor. It has been completely redone with a lovely pale blue tile surrounding a combination bathtub and shower.

Upstairs are four bedrooms: the master with king bed, a guest room with a queen, another bedroom with two twin beds and a sweet hand-painted toddler bed, and the fourth bedroom has an extra-wide twin bed, which can easily sleep two children (or two adults who want to snuggle!). The second full bathroom on this floor has a shower only and has also been completely redone. Natural borders provide coverage from the road and delightful gardens have also been nurtured and restored. There is a gas grill and outdoor seating so you can enjoy those summer evenings.

The house is decorated with charming antique and vintage furniture.

At the back of the property, at the end of a short path through the woods, is a storybook-like playhouse. It is unheated but full of light, books, a long window seat and a play stove for children.

The house is part of the charming South Egremont Village Historic District and is a short walk to the Old Mill Restaurant, Mom’s Restaurant and village shops. It sits on a large tree-lined plot facing a serene and beautiful tree farm so there is a sense of being connected to the village and yet having privacy. A delightful pick-and-eat flower garden, as well as established flower beds is included in the summer rental experience.

Additional Historical Information about The Branch House:
In 1848, Orson Branch, a carriage maker from Pittsfield Massachusetts, ventured south and claimed a small, lovely parcel of land in the town of South Egremont, on the road where Shay’s Rebellion had taken place 61 years before. Orson chose to build his post-and-beam house for his new bride, Mary Ann, on what had once been an old riverbed thousands of years earlier. He
planted vegetables and built a barn. From this barn ‹ now used as an artist’s studio ‹ Orson quietly made the carriages and wagons for his neighbors for nearly three decades.

If you look at the hand-hewn beams in the bedrooms you can still see Orson’s ax marks and his original plank floors that run through the rooms. One can walk 1/3 of a mile from the Branch House to Orson’s grave. He is buried, with many of the town’s founding members, behind the historic Egremont Free Library, originally a boy’s school in the 1830s.
