Property description

Enjoy COMPLETE PRIVACY on 40 Acres in the midst of a Pristine Alaska Wilderness - while staying in a safe and comfortable Country House. Moose Meadow has a phenomenal location in the Matanuska River Valley just 20 miles downriver from the Matanuska Glacier. This narrow Glacier/River Valley separates the Chugach Mountain Range from the Talkeetna Mountain Range, so Moose Meadow has spectacular views of Mountains in each Range. On the property, Sawmill Creek winds through a large Meadow and into the Chickaloon River, which are the life forces for the abundant populations of Alaska Wildlife.

Moose often browse in brush along the Creek and the Meadow, which was formed by a Beaver Pond that existed for decades. Sawmill Creek has Trout & Grayling for Fishing, and is a vibrant Spawning Ground for Salmon. Bald Eagles and Kingfishers are especially active when the Salmon are in the Creek. Mountain Sheep are visible on Castle Mountain through the Spotting Scope, and we regularly see Spruce Hens, Porcupines, Owls, and many more.

Unlike most of the Alaska Properties, this is NOT in a town or in a 'rural subdivision'. Moose Meadow is 1.2 Miles off the Glenn Highway on a private gated road. Most of the surrounding Property (thousands of acres) is owned by an Alaska Native Corporation, which they keep in an undeveloped natural state. Beyond this are hundreds of miles of State land that is virtually inaccessible without a bush plane. Moose Meadow is on the very edge of this enormous pristine wilderness with no neighbors within 1 mile.

The Country House sits on a small bluff overlooking Sawmill Creek and the Meadow, with the spectacular Castle Mountain rising up from the Valley Floor just beyond. The plush and comfortable furniture is arranged to maximize the viewing out the abundant large windows. Most of the wood for the House was milled from trees on the property, and the interior is finished in a modern form of 'Rustic Alaskan'. The Rustic includes lots of natural log work, mounted Moose & Caribou Horns, and a Wood Stove for Heat (River Rock Hearth). The modern includes full plumbing and electricity, with the amenities that they can provide. The 'Green Power System' is state-of-the-art, so guests can enjoy amenities you would not be able to have in the wilderness otherwise. By good fortune we are a couple miles from a Cell Phone Tower, so Mobile Phone reception is amazingly good.

In the Gold Rush of the early 1900's the Nelchina Gold Mine Trail weaved through this property as hundreds of men and mules transported supplies up and gold down the Chickaloon River. The trail is now an official Historic Trail. Later Moose Meadow was part of a larger Homestead managed by a pioneering Wilderness Woman, and the remains of the old Homestead Cabin are still there to be explored. While Moose Meadow has most of the amenities of a city house, the guests will still need a bit of their own pioneering spirit to fully enjoy it . . .

Owner info

Year Purchased: 2007

About the owner: In many ways Moose Meadow is a reflection of Jackson and Ana's marriage and lifestyle. As a native Alaskan, Ana is quite familiar with living in the wilderness as she was raised by her parents on her Grandparents Homestead. She lived in a real rustic log cabin as a child, and they hunted and fished for most of their food. She and Jackson first met when they were 14 & 15, and they went on their first date of their lives together to a High School Dance. Jackson's family only lived in Alaska for 1 year when he was in High School, and soon moved back to the Lower 48. They finally settled in Northern California where Jackson finished college and worked (~20 years). After 27 years since leaving Alaska, Jackson took his Father back to go Halibut Fishing. While they were there they looked up some old friends. When Jackson re-met Ana it was love at first sight (on his part), although she was not far behind and they were engaged within several months. We have now been together for 11 years (married for 9), and enjoy our primary residence in California almost as much as our 2nd home in Alaska!

Why the Owner Chose Palmer:
We bought this amazing property a few years ago because it was still pristine Alaska Wilderness that had not been disturbed or developed. It is 10 miles from our Alaska home, and we own the property between Moose Meadow and the highway. We put in a Private Gated Road to get full access to Moose Meadow for ourselves and our Guests. Our goal is to maintain the land at Moose Meadow in a way that continues to be a sanctuary for the wildlife that lives there. The Country House was under construction when we bought the property as the prior owners intended to live out in the wilderness with only ATV access. The location of the House was excellent and the initial construction sound, so we decided to finish it as a very safe and comfortable house. While Log Cabins look cool, Ana knows firsthand that they are hard to seal/insulate, and only allow small windows. Moose Meadow is weather tight with big windows, with the interior finished in a a modern form of rustic Alaskan. It's one of the few places you can stay in the wilderness without camping in tents or using an outhouse. What we have created is a very comfortable Country House that sits in total privacy in the midst of Pristine Alaska Wilderness. We are proud to be the stewards of such a great piece of wilderness, which we enjoy sharing with our respectful guests.

The Unique Benefits at this Chateau / Country House:
Regardless of the season or weather, we always enjoy the peacefulness and privacy. The Mountain views are astounding, and you can hear both the creek babbling and the river rushing at the same time. Its like living in your own personal National Park! There is always some nature to observe, from subtle to amazing. Since we do not allow shooting or hunting the wildlife continue to use the land as they always have. The creek and river are their fountains of life, so we have a full range of Alaska's wildlife living right here just the way they always have. In the evenings, we love sitting around the campfire. There is just nothing like it. Also after dark there is always a chance for a Northern Lights show.
