Whalen House is situated on the The Three Capes Scenic Drive. This superb stretch of Oregon Coast is on a bypass from HWY 101 and all the more wonderful as a result. Three miles north of Pacific City, we enjoy all the privacy, contemplative silence and visual beauty needed for deep vacation while also being close to what is quaint about this small, riverside town, with its varied dining and popular beach outside the Pelican Pub and Brewery.
Whalen House sits right on the edge of the wild, looking out over the estuary of Sand Lake and across the water to the waves of the Pacific Ocean breaking on the far shore. This view is totally unobstructed by any man made structure. Immediately across the estuary is Whalen Island, a nature reserve, which includes the Clay Myers State Natural Area, with a loop trail through dunes, beach, saltwater marsh, and a Sitka spruce and Douglas fir forest. This nature haven is less than a quarter mile drive or walk from the house. For those who like crabbing, shelling, kayaking, or just walking on the beach it’s just the place.
Extensively restored, Whalen House is endowed with charm, comfort, beauty and lots of space. There is an apartment with sumptuous king size bed and own bathroom, three bedrooms, each with a queen size bed, three bathrooms, and two large living rooms with views of the estuary and ocean. A year-round stream winds through the yard and two small bridges add to the enchantment of the garden. The house is cozy in the winter, and a generous woodstove makes it a great place to weather a storm. In the summer, the sun visits upstairs bedrooms through skylights, eagles and hawks circle overhead, and the porches draw you out to swing in the sky chairs and experience being on the edge of wildness. The recent addition of a hot tub adds sublime hot water pleasure while absorbing the magnificent vista and makes this property an ideal winter or summer vacation home.

My friends and I stayed at this wonderful house for the first time in April of 2011. We had such a great time we went back in September of 2012! We've been 9 or 10 adults each visit, along with a couple of dogs, and we've had more than enough space to spread out and be comfortable. The living room is the best space. I almost preferred it rainy so we could be lazy inside and stare out the huge windows at the lovely view. The beds were all comfortable, the kitchen worked just fine to feed lots of hungry grown-ups, the yard was a great space for the dogs to run around, and the covered hot tub was icing on the cake! We can't wait to go back!Recommended for: Pet owners, girls getaway, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

Our fun gang is going to Whalen House for the third time and we can't wait for May. We sleep 6 adults and 7 teens comfortably and have plenty of room to spread out and visit. The house is beautiful and the yard is so relaxing with a great view and a hot tub. Even though the property isn't not directly on the beach, an amazing park is just around the corner. We started and ended each day on this beautiful nature preserve with a loop hike through old growth forest and on to the beach. The kids and dogs can run forever on this peaceful beach. We appreciate this loved home and envy the owners who enjoy it too!Recommended for: Pet owners, families with teenagers, girls getaway, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, families with young children, sightseeing.
Owner response: Thanks for this Therese and thanks for pointing out the wonder and gift of Whalen Island State Park. Whalen House is named after this park and island and sits right opposite, just across the estuary. Its a best kept secret - very empty and wild. I never visit Whalen Island without walking my dogs there, when the estuary catches the summer sun I also swim there. In the spring there are pearl pink rhododendrons everywhere.

Four writers looking for privacy as well as a chance to bond, we needed space to create as well as a place to gather and share our experiences. Whalen House gave us just that. Totally cozy, but with plenty of room to spread out. The views are gorgeous and the house was beautifully maintained. I'd go back in a heartbeat!Recommended for: Age 55+, pet owners, families with teenagers, girls getaway, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, families with young children, sightseeing.

This was the perfect house for writers retreat. We fixed all our meals together and ate in kitchen with the lovely fireplace and window seats. It was an added treat to have the hot tub in the evenings and early mornings! For us, the amount of space (4 separate bedrooms) with all the nooks and crannies to write alone during the days and then join together for reading salons in the "view room" worked perfectly. We saw so many birds as the sky opened to sunshine on Saturday! This place was very affordable for how large it was. I would recommend it to friends. Stop at the Pelican Pub for lunch on the way home!Recommended for: Age 55+, pet owners, families with teenagers, girls getaway, sightseeing.

We stayed here as a group of 7 adult friends on a semi-rainy weekend in October. The main hang-out space has a high ceiling and lots of large windows that look out on the estuary. It's full of light (if there's any to be had on the Oregon coast), spacious, and cozy with an efficient wood stove. The house stayed so toasty warm once we got it warmed up that we didn't even need the wood stove the second night to be completely comfy. The kitchen is well-stocked and great to cook in. There's an excellent music selection as well as an interesting library of books. There's also a good selection of DVDs, however the television/DVD space is not the most comfortable place in the house so if what you're really looking for is to watch movies all weekend, another house might be better for that. We found plenty of other things to do - lazing in the hot tub, walking around the island and to the hidden dunes (amazing little forest on that trail), playing games together. Had an excellent time in this lovely gathering space. Everything was as described in the listing and very well maintained.Recommended for: Age 55+, pet owners, families with teenagers, girls getaway, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, families with young children, sightseeing.
Owner response: I love this description of Whalen House and its possibilities. I also appreciate the feedback re the DVD/Video viewing section, which I knew when I set it up would limit comfort for sure. My response to this timely reminder is to replace the current selection of small slippery pillows with 15-20 largish, soft, sofa cushions instead. Upstairs there are four large bean bags you can drag down as well. I guarantee this will up the comfort levels mightily.

I might not be poetic like the 2 previous reviews, but: This place is amazing!! We had a good number of people. I had 6 of my grandbabies in the backyard at once. They played for hours in and around the creek. It was magical. This Thanksgiving weekend will be a repeat! Soul building.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 3/4

Warm, peaceful, safe, exciting, gorgeous - just some of the many words to describe this home! The location is ideal - minutes from the beach, and, more importantly, an amazing estuary that multiplies the activities for the kids. My eight year-old had the time of his life running through the sandbars, wading through the tide pools, collecting crabs and fish. My four and one year-olds made (and ate) sand castles and played with shells. My dog was in heaven - running through the sands, chasing birds! The environment is not only beautiful - it is safe from the crashing waves, giving the children an amazing and safe coastal experience. As for the home, we loved being there. The gardens contain an adventure in themselves - with a running brook filled with life, gorgeous flowers and trees, and endless possiblities for exploration. My husband and I had just as much fun as the kids - the beach is beautiful and romantic - and the home has a wonderful area for the kids to be in, and, when we wanted, a separate place for us to play games, sit by the fire, watch the waves, and truly, deeply, relax. This is, hands down, our favorite place on earth to stay - we will come here time and time again - over Hawaii, Mexico, or a fancy B&B or hotel. This home is magical - filled with personal touches and different than the average rental. Usually, vacation rentals are sterile and impersonal - existing primarily to make money for the owner. I have the feeling that this house is different - that it is a beloved home that the owners love and care for. Our week at this house was one of the best family experiences we have had - and we can't wait to come back! We are eternally grateful to have found this home - and I guarentee that you will love it just as much!Recommended for: Age 55+, pet owners, families with teenagers, girls getaway, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, families with young children, sightseeing.

Why the Owner Chose Pacific City:
It was love at first sight. After camping for three straight summers at the Whalen Island campsite (Clay Meyers) with our grandchildren and thinking we had found the ideal camp ground, we saw a 'for sale' sign right across the estuary from the island. The property went on the market that day and we bought it the next. We haven't used the campsite since
The Unique Benefits at this House:
Whalen House perches on the edge of wildness. Hummingbirds, swallows, red wing blackbirds everywhere, sounds of the sea and seabirds, white and blue herons poised timelessly in the shallows. Simply put it is enchanting - and a creek runs through it.
Winter competes well with summer for enjoying this place; log fires, winter storms plus a semi covered hot tub placed on the best view site on the property makes coast weather a real pleasure.
