North Island is the perfect Moosehead Lake experience. A private island with an adorable cabin, not too remote, but just remote enough to feel like you are really taking a Maine vacation. My mother, my brother and his three children (10 - 13 years old) visited with us for part of our stay. The cabin's two bedrooms were very comfortable, and we pitched a tent on the picnic platform for the kids. The kids loved exploring the island, helping with the campfires and swimming in the lake! If you are looking for luxury accommodations, this is probably not the place for you. But if you love being outdoors, and don't mind being disconnected from your electronics, North Island is perfect! Very peaceful and totally comfortable. Yes, the lights are propane, and we did need to pump our own water to do the dishes. But there is a refrigerator to keep the beverages cold, and the outhouse was super clean and well maintained. We loved watching the Katahdin go by every afternoon and seeing the loons fishing just off shore was a treat. Janet and her family were fantastic with helping us on and off the island with all our stuff, and the nice folks at Northwoods Outfitters helped ferry the family out in a pinch. Otherwise we managed quite nicely with just our kayaks. We are already looking forward to the next time we can visit the island!

Ok so I didn't really want to write this review because now everyone will want to rent this most amazing spot and there wont be any more open weeks but I promised Janet I would. First off Janet and Brian and Heidi and her husband made us feel right at home and were more than helpful. I have to say I didn't know what to expect being on an island for a week. What would we do? Well needless to say, we ran out of time before we ran out of things to do. The water is crystal clear and tempurate. You can swim from anywhere on the island with out being in "MUCK". There is a dock to jump off of and a huge underwater boulder to swim out to. Bring a mask and snorkel its worth it. The bonfire pit was used every night with the moon on the water. From one side of the island you see the sunrise and the other the sunset. There is actually three islands, one main and two smaller all of which the kids and dogs had a blast exploring. The islands where easily reached wading in two feet of water. The kids also enjoyed catching crayfish especially at night, they are in abundance on the shore. We saw an eagle too. Town was enjoyable with some nice restaurants. We also went to Kineo Island to hike and climbed Mt Katahdin (about a 2 hr drive to Baxter State Park ). Initially the plan was to stay in Acadia for two weeks but last minute we decided to do a week at the ocean and a week at the lake. I'm thinking next year we will skip the ocean. We are all sad we had to leave the island and can't wait to return next year. Thank you for sharing your bit of paradise with us.

Owner response: Thank you, we're so glad you loved it (we do too), let us know if you want us to save you a week or two for next summer. You guys were great tenants. It has been a beautiful summer here on Moosehead.

My husband and I needed to get away from the hustle and bustle of life and found reprieve on this island. We arrived at the landing where Brian met us and brought all of our things out to the island, we followed him in our kayaks enjoying the scenery on the way. After arriving on the island (which was an easy paddle from the landing that we parked at) we were greeted by a cozy cabin right out of an LL Bean catalog with amazing views of the lake on all sides. We spent our time lazing in the hammock or fishing off of the north side of the island or just napping listening to the waves on the rocks. We made a few trips in to town and had no problem getting to and from the boat landing with the kayaks. If you are looking for a place to relax, swim and enjoy some quiet time with beautiful scenery I would recommend coming here. Thank you so much for your hospitality Brian and Janet and for making our stay comfortable and relaxing. We will definitely be back!

The cabin is wonderful. We enjoyed the privacy. Our dogs loved being free to explore and swim. The girls got a huge kick out of trying to capture crayfish at night. I loved the peace and quiet out by the campfire at night. We enjoyed the hiking, and exploring the lake in our boat. We had such a wonderful time we extended our stay by two weeks. We hope to get two weeks this year instead of one.

                      Owner info

                      Year Purchased: 1992

About the owner: North Island is owned by two families, Janet and Brian Chasse, Heidi and Jeff Richards. Both families live in Greenville and are very involved in the Greenville community. Heidi works in rental properties and as a jewelry consultant, Janet in retail, Brian as a carpenter and Jeff as a Merchant Seaman (and coach when he's off duty). Both families, with their children ranging in ages from 11 to 32, have enjoyed the island immensely.

                      Why the Owner Chose Greenville:
Janet and Brian bought the island 20 years ago when they were looking for a place nearby to camp with their 5 kids. What a perfect spot to spend summers! It was priceless. Jeff (Janet's brother) and Heidi bought in several years ago and both families are presently tied up a lot with their kid's activities and sports, so we decided to rent some. We give the camp a thorough cleaning and check over between each renter and are nearby if you need anything.

The Unique Benefits at this Cabin:
North Island is close enough to town to feel comfortable, but is so private and peaceful, a great place to relax and reconnect with family and friends. All you need to bring is food and clothes. We are readily available if you need us for anything, but you won't see us (or anyone else) on the island unless you want to. At this time the rental is available May-Sept.
