This third floor walk up is in the historic James Merrill House which is located in the center of Stonington Borough.
The rental apartment enjoys Stonington Harbor water views from the front living room that can also double as a second bedroom. The apartment has a large bright bathroom, a galley kitchen and a quiet bedroom at the back of the building which receives morning sun. The apartment is a stone's throw from restaurants and shops. It is a five minute walk to DuBois Beach and the beautiful Stonington lighthouse.
The Jackson Apartment (as we refer to this apartment) is adjacent to the historic Merrill Apartment on the third floor of a mixed use Victorian building which also includes three shops at street level and two year round rental units on the second floor. The Merrill Building was purchased by the Pulitzer Prize winning American poet, James Merrill, in 1955. He summered there, much of the time with his partner David Jackson, until Merrill’s death in1995 when ownership of the building was given to the Stonington Village Improvement Association (SVIA). The Merrill apartment is maintained by the Merrill House Committee of the SVIA as a place for work, study, and inspiration as part of a 15-year old writer-in-residence program.
