Wonderful Vacation House
Wonderful Vacation House

We were immensely happy with our experience in Barnstable and with our experience of this beautiful and comfortable old house. We loved how nice it was to just run to the market down the street for things we had forgotten or run out of. And we all enjoyed the hot tub especially at night after the kids had gone to bed. Millway Beach was an absolutely great experience at high tide and low and during all the depths between. It was wonderful, like having two different beaches in one. We had been a little concerned that it would present an expanse of mud flats at low tide but we found, as the owner had assured us, that it wasn’t so. It was rather a great sandy area for walking, wading, and discovering all the variety of its shellfish. The short walk from the house to the beach from the house was all on sidewalks that made it safe for pedestrians. We were with our daughters and their families. Our grandkids ranged from 11 to 2 years old. There were, as would be expected with an old house (or with a lot of newer ones, for that matter) some minor inconveniences created by the need to accommodate so large a family. With one couple in the middle bedroom on the second floor and the 2 year-old sleeping in a crib in the “birthing room” the bathroom on that floor was effectively blocked of from the and the only other way to get to that bathroom from the Master Bedroom unless one went down the front stairs to the first floor and back up the other set of stairs. But that was a minor inconvenience. The outdoor shower was of course wonderful as well, the kitchen was well equipped and comfortable, and the dining room table opened up to accommodate us at dinnertime even when there were eleven of us gathered around it. The fact that the house had central air was a blessing – especially for sleeping (we were there during a very hot and humid week.) And once the humidity broke we were able to enjoy the great backyard. There was some occasional traffic noise from Rte. 6a (Main St.) on the south side of the house but that was hardly a real problem or detraction from the pleasures of great house in a great location.Did you find this review helpful? We rented this home to be on the Cape for my son's wedding. This beautiful home provided a warm, comfortable setting for everything from an intimate dinner for the bridal party to outstanding wedding pictures in the lovely landscaped yard. The home was a great place for our family, now living in 4 different states to relax and enjoy our weekend together. The property is very well-maintained and provides all the comforts of home. I look forward to returning to Barnstable when I have more time to explore the area, visit the beaches, and try the local cuisine.Recommended for: Sightseeing, girls getaway, families with young children, age 55+, families with teenagers.

We recently rented your house to celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary with our two children and their families... nine in all. We hadn't rented a vacation home before and were uneasy about making a committment site unseen. Once inside the house our fears diappeared. What a beautiful home! Your description online was very accurate. It was clean and comfortable and Barnstable is a lovely location. Our three grandchildren (3,6 and 7) loved exploring every nook and cranny and the adults did their fair share of checking out the details of this beautiful home. There was plenty of room to find a quiet place to read, play board games or watch TV. We ate most of our meals at the large kitchen table. The kitchen was clean, had working appliances and was well equipped. We took full advantage of the close proximity to the harbor, the beach, and the many local restaurants. We went on the whale watch (The Hyannis Whale Watch gives you a wonderful view of Sandy Neck and we saw tons of whales), several trips to Osterville Too and our final dinner at the Barnstable Tavern was a perfect way to end our week. I's be remiss if I didn't say that a trip to Smittys for ice cream was almost a nightly trek! The corner the house sits on is busy but the fence along the back created a boundary for the children and they were content to play in the yard and not venture out. As we were packing up we kept saying how we hated to go, it was like leaving a good friend. We all agreed this house more than met our needs and our experience was very positive. We would definitely rent this house again. It was a relaxing vacation. Many thanks!Recommended for: Sightseeing, tourists without a car, girls getaway, families with young children, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.

Talk about getting lucky!!!! I live in California, one of my sisters lives in Florida and my other sister lives in Plymouth, however she could not make it down to see the house before we arrived, so this was a total sight-unseen rental. We arrived and we were so over whelmed with pleasure. The weather was absolutely amazing for November on the Cape, but that was not the lucky part! The lucky part was this home it is AMAZING!!!! We had our old fashion Thaksgiving. Lots of room for games, great family room with fireplace, flat screen tv for watching the Macy's parade, wonderful, fully equipted kitchen. Hot tub for after dinner relaxing. It was one of the BEST vacations we ever had!!!!! We walked around the village and to the beach. This home is your typical Cape Cod home!!! It has so much character, to much to put in towords. A must see to believe! The owner was so wonderful to work with. We hope to do it again next year. Thank so much for a wonderful vacation!!!!!!!!! Great for small and large families.Recommended for: Sightseeing, girls getaway, families with young children, families with teenagers.

We rented this property for three weeks this summer and our friends, another family of four, joined us for 10 days during that time. The house is charming and there is plenty of space for two families. Although be aware that one of the upstairs rooms interconnects to the bathroom and also, the downstairs ensuite bedroom although pretty, is very small. The kids loved exploring the house and we all enjoyed the hot tub on the deck. It's a very relaxing house, with a nice unspoilt beach about 10 mins walk away. My only disappointment was the level of traffic noise, it can be a little much at times, especially as the house is on a fairly busy intersection. However, I would say that the historic beauty of the house and the quiet charm of Barnstable itself more than made up for this. We had a memorable three weeks and will definitely visit Cape Cod again.Recommended for: Sightseeing, families with young children, families with teenagers.
Owner response: Thank you for your kind review, we are very glad that you enjoyed your stay. Just to clarify for new readers, the upstairs room that is described in the above review is not considered one of the 5 bedrooms that the house boasts. The room in question is an old Colonial "Birthing Room", and is a flow through room that connects to the upstairs bathroom. We use this room as a library/reading room, and it just so happens to have a day bed that can convert into a queen size bed. This room is considered a "bonus room", and is not intended to be a bedroom (although many use it as one). It also should be noted that the house is located directly in Barnstable Village, on historic Main Street. The location gives the best of both worlds, as you have ample privacy in the back, yet you are just a quick stroll to coffee shops, general store, restaurants, antique/art galleries, and the picture perfect Mill Way beach and Barnstable Harbor. The house is not in the countryside, and there is some foot and auto traffic from the Village. The flip side to that is you can walk everywhere and not have to step foot in a car for your whole stay. Barnstable Village is a very special place, we are sure you will fall in love with it's Colonial charm. Luke Murphy Owner "Bag End"

This house is charming, clean, impeccably maintained, and in a great location in Barnstable Village (quick walk to coffee shop, general store, restaurants, and beach). A few other couples and I stayed there for a weekend with babies and had a great time. The kitchen and bathrooms are updated and beautiful, and the beds are very comfortable. This is a perfect house -- and I am very picky so I don't easily say that. The owner is very nice and allowed us to stay there for less than the required nights minimum at a reasonable price.Recommended for: Sightseeing, tourists without a car, girls getaway, families with young children, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.

My family (9 altogether, with the occasional float-ins) stayed at this house between June 28th and July 5th and we can’t say enough about the house! The house is exceptionally beautiful and offers a cozy “colonial sea captain” get away. We used all 5 of the bedrooms, and everyone slept comfortably. The residence has 3 total bathrooms--- which was great, because both my in-laws and husband and I were able to have some privacy. My daughter especially enjoyed being read bedtime stories in the reading nook (she stayed in the bunk room that is perfect for kids). We also took full advantage of the back yard and beautiful gardens, having bbq dinners almost every evening outside! The kitchen is exceptional and the true gem of this house!--- I felt like Julia Child preparing dinner in such a glamorous kitchen. What's more, the house is conveniently located directly in the cutest village you can imagine, with a general store nearby and an ice cream shop just steps away (4 C's—a must have!) The Dolphin Restaurant is right down the street and has some terrific sea food, as well as other great restaurants (all a brief walk away). It was so great to be located right in the center of town, but just a short walk to the beach. We didn’t find the house noisy at all, and we found that the back yard, patio, deck and gardens created plenty of privacy for being located directly in a village. Altogether, my family had an exceptional time and fully intend on renting this same house for two weeks next summer. If you are looking for a property to stay at where you can walk to the beach and have a quiet time with your family, yet still have access to activities and things to do, this is the place for you. We give this house 5 stars, all the way!"Recommended for: Sightseeing, tourists without a car, girls getaway, families with young children, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.

Nine of us from ages 6-85 loved this house! The location is perfect for walking into town where there are wonderful restaurants, general store and shops. It is also an easy walk to the Whale Watch cruise which we highly recommend! The close beach is very nice and one can walk out at low tide! The house is beautiful, clean and had everything we needed. The kitchen is especially wonderful and stocked well with spices and utensils! The only problem we had was the upstairs toilet the night we checked in. We called, left a message and by the next afternoon everything was working. There is a village bus that goes to some of the towns close by, we did not take advantage of this, but saw it run frequently and if one wanted to use it, there is a stop very close to the house. The downstairs bedroom has a walk in shower which was particularly helpful for my mother in law. She was able to have her own private bedroom/shower area and enjoy the downstairs with all of us and never had to go up the stairs which would have been difficult for her. Part of our family took the ghost tour and really enjoyed it! The house is not haunted! (They asked). Anyway, if you are looking for a house that offers plenty of space, a spot that has easy access to either drive or walk - we highly recommend this one. Even on a rainy day - we all relaxed and had plenty of room to read, play games, watch tv, etc. Enjoy!Recommended for: Sightseeing, families with young children, age 55+, families with teenagers.

This home is truly amazing! It well exceeded our expectaions. Located one block from the quaint town of Barnstable and a short, beautiful walk to Millway beach...it was a perfect setting for my parent's 50th Anniversary. We had a full house, but it never felt cramped. Sleeping arrangements were plentiful and the owners (who are lovely!) provided first class bedding (and plenty of it!). The kitchen is truly suited for a gourmet chef and comes very well stocked with plateware, pots, glassware, knives, etc... the decor is stunning. Think "Restoration Hardware meets Pottery Barn" in a restored 1825 Captian's house on Cape Cod. Cozy!!! The reading nook and the pig room were great little surprises...but you will have to rent the house to see them for yourselves. Highly recommended!Recommended for: Tourists without a car, girls getaway, families with young children, romantic getaway, families with teenagers.

We were 10 people for one week (2 families) and 2 bedrooms out of 5 are really tiny. It is sold for 5 bedrooms and we tried to find the 5th one...There is only 1 real bathroom and this is a challenge to have privacy and convenience when 10 individuals in this house. Last but not least, this is a quite noisy environment as the property is located on road 6A at a crossroad with traffic lights... Day and night, this is honestly hard to find silence to relax with such traffic. On good side, this is an historical house with cosy inside decoration. And the area is convenient with close shops and Barnstable port.Recommended for: Romantic getaway.
