Pros: - Very spacious 1 bedroom apartment, including full kitchen and 2 large beds - Friendly and accommodating owner (Guy) and property manager (Todd) - Some nice touches (large high kitchen table, fancy bathroom faucet, toilet felt like a throne, comfy bed) - Only 5-10 min North of Hilo - Good value - Excellent shower water pressure - Cooled down at night without A/C Cons: - Floor felt dirty (and created black feet) - Basement apartment smelled musty in places (although fortunately bugs were minimal) - Coqui frogs were loud (although this is apparently a problem everywhere in Hilo area, and I slept well by closing the windows) - Place did not have much character -- functional apt in a random residential neighborhood off highway - On our last night, there apparently was someone staying in apartment above us (I think with kids), and footsteps were quite evident - Kitchen cabinetry, along with bathroom closet, in need of some repair - Shower could have been cleaner Overall, I think this is a good value, solid option if staying in Hilo area.Did you find this review helpful? We enjoyed our three days at Hilo and found the accommodation very spacious, a comfortable bed and all the basics you need are there. It's close to the downtown area and a great place to use as a base to seeing sights.Recommended for: Tourists without a car.

My boyfriend's sister recommended we stay here when visiting Hilo and we are thankful we took her advice. It was extremely spacious; with a kitchen/dining area, living room, 1 bathroom, and a large bedroom with two huge and comfortable beds. We had everything we needed and more. Internet, cable, radio, sauna, and board games were included. There was also a washer and dryer available for use, free of charge. The back yard was spacious, and we ventured beyond the yard and we were greeted with a beautiful river and waterfall. Todd, the property manager was very welcoming. The second day of our stay, he brought us a bunch of bananas. He was very helpful with advice on what to see and directions. There was also a great travel guide book in our room. Everything was relatively close (short driving distance) to the apartment, but you still got the feel of relaxing seclusion. The apartment was spacious, clean, and surrounded by beautiful scenery. The property manager was very friendly. And the price doesn't get much better than here. I highly recommend this place to everyone. If I ever find myself on the big island again, I will definitely be arranging a stay here again.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, girls getaway.

This was a nice place to stay if staying on the Hilo side of the island. It was clean and a nice size and the owners and Todd (property manager) was a great help. I would consider staying here again next time I go to the island, however, I do feel I need to point a couple things out. This in no way reflects on how good the unit was but the road to get to the unit is very narrow and only one car can get through. I usually didn't find it a problem but did encounter cars coming the other way a couple of times (once was a semi) and I had to back up rather quickly to avoid getting hit. The parking for the unit was also someone difficult to maneuver which again is partly due to the narrowness of the road. Really this is the only reason the is taking the star rating from 5 to 4. It is close to Hilo and a great location for exploring that side of the island.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children.

I expected more of a view given the picture shown in the write-up but instead found this was a basement unit. Instructions stated we were not allowed on the balcony overlooking the property. Location is near many local attractions and it was clean and well-maintained. Just be aware that you will be staying in basically a basement.Recommended for: Sightseeing, families with young children.
Owner response: Although this is the lower level of the house and it is several steps down to the entrance, there are lots of large windows, all above ground (no window wells or below ground windows anywhere) and views from most all of them out onto the big, beautiful yard. This one bedroom apartment has its own patio, with a brand new dining table and chairs (and grill if desired), directly outside the door and adjacent to the yard (so there is no need to use the covered balcony next door that belongs to another unit). There is now also a brand new picnic table with benches and other chairs around the huge back yard for the use of guests. I'm not sure why this guest wanted to use the covered balcony (maybe it was raining?). We've also just completed other upgrades to the unit, including some new cabinets, art on the walls, paint colors, etc.
