The "Slaughter House" is one of the most unique rentals in Taos, NM. It is located on the Mariposa Ranch, between the town of Taos, and Taos Ski Valley. It is one of the original buildings on the Mariposa Ranch. It has been renovated and modernized for our own families personal use. The house is surrounded by pastures with horses, goats, and llamas. A few feet from the front door is a small pond, an old barn, and miles of private property for you to enjoy. The pond is a catch and release pond. Bring your fishing poles!
The house is 1400 square feet with an open floor plan. It has a well- equipped kitchen with stainless steel appliances, sub zero refrigerator, and custom made cabinets. The dining area has a large kiva fireplace. There are two bedrooms with queen beds. The bathroom has a tub/shower and two stainless sinks. A handsome, handcarved stairway leads to a small loft area with one twin bed. We provide fine linens and insist on a well-kept, impeccably clean house. Although the experience of being in Taos is that of being in the wild west, you'll feel safe in an environment of the Mariposa cowboys and our family being on site.
The only traffic you might encounter is that of the working cowboys or our own family. At certain times of the year, the cowboys are herding and branding the cattle. This makes life on our ranch exciting and memorable. The cowboys keep the roads plowed in the winter, so there is never a problem getting to the slopes. You will hear coyotes howling in the night and that's about all. The sunsets are spectacular.

Owner's Profile
Owner Description
Year Purchased: 1987
Our family loves Taos and life on the Mariposa Ranch. We enjoy horseback riding, snow skiing, and the unique people of Taos. We are originally from Louisiana but found ourselves unable to stay away from the mountains, sunsets and comfortable climate of Taos. We have found ourselves in a second career and fully emerged in the Taos community. We own two local restaurants, a wine/liquor store, and a catering company. We have always shared our "Slaughter House" and "Ranch House" with family and close friends but now offer it to travelers looking for an authentic Taos experience. We hope that you enjoy it as much as we do.
Why the Owner Chose Taos
Our property has never been shared with guest outside of our own family and friends. We did not buy our property with the intention of renting. It was purchased for our love of this area and protection of our own views and privacy. We are excited about sharing this special place with you.
The Unique Benefits of this House
All of the above mentioned. We probably appreciate being a part of a working ranch, and the sunsets most of all. It is also nice that our ski racing kids can be on the mountain in 15 minutes, and our cowgirls (cowboy) can jump on their horses and be riding through the sage brush at a moments notice. We are very lucky because we live in the Land of Enchantment... Please check our "Ranch House" on VRBO listed # 270197. You can enjoy your experience with another family, friends etc... The houses are a few feet from each other. The "Ranch House" is 3 br and two bath.
Spring break is holiday rates. We offer a $50 gift certificate valid for The Old Blinking Light Restaurant or Lambert's of Taos during February and March.
Upon arrival, guest receive a free appetizer from 2 local restaurants, a bottle of wine, sparkling water, coffee, tea, chips/salsa, and chocolate.

An excellent place to stay

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Slaughterhouse. It is a comfortable, lovely place. We really liked the wide open spaces with mountain views and great sunsets. Since you are on a ranch there are very few houses in your way. We took walks down the dirt road, enjoyed reading and relaxing on the patio, and cooked meals in the spacious kitchen. There were only two of us, but there is plenty of room for another couple or kids. We will probably stay here again and would recommend it to friends. It is very centrally located to Taos, the Ski Valley, Questa, hiking, John Dunn Bridge and Rio Grande. The listing photos are very accurate.

We would like to first say thank you (MAHALO) for making our Christmas Holiday truly lasting. We live in Hawaii and felt the ALOHA spirt at the Slaughterhouse and on the ranch. It is perfect, warm, and convenient to all activites you choose to enjoy. Twenty minutes away from the ski valley. The kitchen was used for a great Christmas dinner with friends, along with the kids making ginger bread houses. Breakfast before the early ski day everyday. Dish TV for the football games, and Holiday songs were played daily.( Heated floors nice touch). Horse's,Lama's,dog's and even the skidish coyote were welcome. We truly look forward to next Cristmas in Taos. Mahalo, all Our ALOHA!!

Dear Vee: Ted, Tracy and I all loved the Slaughter House. We spent the whole time skiing and loved the fact we could be home from the ski valley within 15 minutes to catch the sunsets. The Slaughter House was well insulated and provided all the amenities of home plus it was extremely quiet & relaxing. I can't wait to come up in the summer for some trail rides. Thanks so much. Rob

Spent a lovely Halloween Weekend at the Slaughter House with my partner and two close friends. First, let me say the space is just beautiful both inside and out! The beds, linens, piano, and QUIET, are all unsurpassed. The views, the stars, just lovely. Vee and her family were quite helpful and welcoming. The horses, lamas, and cows enhance the pastoral experience. My partner is a gourmet cook, and she was beyond delighted with the high quality kitchen and its wonderful, high quality, pots, pans, dishes, and various utensils. If you want to have a truly memorable experience, book the Slaughterhouse.

The Slaughter House is unbelievable! Everything has been done first class in the remodeling this one of a kind home. The owners should be featured on HGTV! We felt lucky to have found this treasure just outside of Taos. Perfect location, if you ever want to leave, your just 10 minutes to town, 10 minutes to the mountians. It is truely a delightful warm home with the most unbelievable views from every window or every room. The owners are WONDERFUL to rent from, we did so last minute and Vee took such good care of making sure we had everything we needed. Luxury designer linens, bedding and towels...the pillows and down comforter are heavenly. Wake up to the most beautiful sunrise with the horses in view, and build a fire in the kiva fireplace and enjoy a spectalar sunset. We choose to grill out and enjoy this fabulous unique kitchen, which had everything and more that you will need. We loved walking the property and enjoyed the added bonus,a great pond to catch and release huge trout! We left our boot heals dragging in the road with only one thing in mind, how fast can we return and rent the "Slaughter House". We found everything about this home to be first class, starting with the owners. Thanks for sharing your slice of paridise, we will be back...soon! LOVE LOVE LOVE YOUR RANCH! Also we enjoyed the best beef Nachos and wonderful beers at the "Old Blinking Light", just down the road from home. Thanks again Vee and Mike, Tina and Mike

We went in the summer with our three children (6, 5, & 3) - what a wonderful experience. The owners have thought of everything - there's not much for wanting here. And are always happy to answer any question. The property has a fishing pond, horses, and tons of room to breathe. The views are spectacular inside & out. We will DEFINITELY be back for more next year. Thank you for a wonderful vacation.

We have stayed in the Slaughter House several times and every time it has been exceptional. The house is so stylish and the location is outstanding. Our kids LOVE staying on the ranch, feeding the goats and horses, fishing in the pond, and playing with the barn cats. They have even found ancient Indian pottery shards and a perfect arrowhead on the property! My husband and I love the peace and quiet, but also the easy access to town and the ski mountain. Sunsets truly are spectacular from the porch, looking out over the valley. This is our number one favorite destination, summer and winter. The Slaughter House makes our visits to Taos unforgettable.
