LOCAL TIPS:
Less than 13 miles from our home is WACHUSETT MOUNTAIN has a long history of tourism on the mountain. Summet Elavation - 2,000 feet, Vertical Drop - 1,000 feet, 22 trails, 110 acres of skiable terrain, snow making, The longest trail is 1 1/2 miles on “Balance Rock.”. Over 600,000 people visit the mountain year round with at least half of that number visiting the Wachusett Mountain State Reservation in the summer and fall. The Learning Center at Wachusett Mountain offers Special Beginner Packages to Advanced Training Clinics. The Wachusett Mountain Ski School gives class lessons daily (both private and semi private lessons are also available.) The mountain boasts the largest ski school (200 instructors) in Massachusetts. The 38,000-square-foot Wachusett Mountain Base Lodge, cited for excellence in architectural design, boasts a warm, comfortable atmosphere with exposed beam construction, a huge fireplace and sun decks surrounding the building.
If you want to make your own NEW ENGLAND CLAMBAKE, my favorite stop is West Boylston's SEAFOOD Market. To get there, turn left on Route 12 about 6 miles, and it's on the left hand side. They have the freshest fish, shrimp, claims, lobsters at great prices. A local "specialty" is the New England Clam Chowder or Lobster Bisque, it's delicious with crackers as an appetizer.
2 Must Stops only minutes away from the lake house include the Clearview Farms and Roto-Spring Farms:
CLEARVIEW FARM is a 32 acre seasonal orchard and farm stand run by Rick and Diane Melone. It is located at 4 Kendall Hill Road in Sterling, Massachusetts. This farm has an interesting historical background because of it’s ties to the home of Mary E. Sawyer, the little girl in the nursery rhyme “Mary Had a Little Lamb.” A statue in the center of Sterling commemorates Mary and her lamb. Diane is a sixth generation descendant of Mary and currently owns the Sawyer homestead. Rick still farms some of the original Sawyer farmland. This site has been a farm for 200 years and in this family 6 generations. The farm includes: 20 acres of apples, 4 acres of peaches and nectarines, 12 acres of pumpkins, 6 acres raspberries and blueberries, 2 acres of other vegetables.
ROTO-SPRING FARM offers over 50 varieties of HOME MADE ICE CREAM, organic fed meat, produce, fruit, eggs and they even have a petting zoo for little ones. Be sure to look at their calendar of events such a hay rides, pumpkin festivals, etc...
I recently discovered Cutie Patutie’s Consignment shop full of inexpensive, gently used merchandise. To get there, turn right on Route 12 toward Leominster about 6 miles, and it's on the left hand side. They have a lot of useful items for reasonable prices. It's a great place to pick up odds and ends along with toys and books for children.
The Sterling Town Clerk's Office serves as a vendor for MASS WILDLIFE, for issuing fishing, trapping, hunting and sporting licenses and stamps. Licenses are available when the office is open to the public: Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Fridays from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Licenses may also be purchased online please refer to the URL link added on this site. For non-residents 10-day Temporary License are available online.
Town History:
THE TOWN OF STERLING Massachusetts was founded in 1781 and is located in the Worcester County area and is set at the foothills of Mount Wachusett. Sterling was named for the Earl of Sterling, a Scottish Lord. Sterling is home of Mary Sawyer of "Mary had a little lamb" fame. There is a statue of the lamb in the Town Common which attracts many visitors each year. Every year during the month of September the Sterling Town Fair attracts many people from near and far who enjoy the many attractions of the fair which include horse and oxen pulls as well as game booths, rides, food and music and much much more!

My family enjoyed our stay in this cabin with beautiful views of the lake. Our intention was to go skiing, however, mother nature did not cooperate. We were able to find plenty of outdoor activities to do with the kids. The amenities were much more than we expected. The stores and restaurants in the area are all very close, but you still get the feeling of being in the wilderness. Overall, we enjoyed the cabin and our interactions with the owner were very pleasant.

We arrived at the house in the evening and woke up the next morning to a beautiful view of the lake from the large windows in the living room. We shopped at Clearview Farm for fresh produce, pie and wonderful Bread and Butter Pickles. We felt completely at home in this clean, comfortable, cozy house. Orsi sent us directions to the house from Logan Airport and we had no problem finding it. We traveled over 1,000 miles in eight days using the house as a base and got to see so many wonderful sights. We will be back when it's possible. Thank you Orsi.

We had a wonderful stay in mid-August with our 3.5 year old and 1.5 year old children. The house was perfect for the children - open spaces inside and outside for play; toys, crib, high chair, baby gate, children's plates and cups; nearby beach (we walked every day); steps to the lake and stable onland dock (children played for hours); laundry; and the Davis Farmland with petting zoo and play areas. Mom and Dad had fun on beautiful neighborhood jogs and enjoyed dinner on the deck overlooking the lovely lake (no mosquitoes and no humidity were heaven for us). The owners couldn't have been nicer or more accommodating.

I stayed for two weeks from July 31 to August 14. In addition to the view, the house was spacious and comfortable and it had a lovely back yard and a sandy beach. I used to live in the area so it was very convenient for me to visit family and friends. I loved staying there and hope to go back next year. Thank you Orsi.

We stayed at this house for a week in late July. The swimming was great! The house has all the amenities, lots of space, and a huge deck. Beds are very comfortable and the children loved the nightlight in the bunk bed room! There is a large grassy back yard and some shade from nearby trees. The kitchen is well-equipped and there is a gas grill on the deck. We enjoyed most meals outside. Our dealings with the owner and the caretakers were very pleasant. Thanks for letting us stay in your home!

We had a truly magical holiday and have lots of wonderful photos to remember the experience by. The house is very kid friendly and there was plently to do in the area. The setting is stunning - our most memorable moments where sitting on the deck eating together overlooking the lake. Thank you.

My family needed a place to stay in central MA as we had to travel home to see extended family. We only use VRBO when looking for a place to stay and I chose this place because it was the closest to all of the places we needed to be. Dealing with Orsi and her family was the most pleasurable experience we have had yet in dealing with VRBO. The house was very spacious and the lake setting perfect for having family over to relax on the deck. Our extended family has begged us to come back every year and rent this house! I am not sure about the every year part, but we will however rent this house each time we do need to go back...thanks so much Orsi:)

We came from CA to visit family in central Mass. and enjoyed our stay at this lake house. It was comfortable and relaxing, and the lake views are beautiful. We stayed with our two young children and they enjoyed the big deck to run around, as well as the nearby beach. It was extra nice to have some new toys to play with. It was great to have the kitchen and all the dishes available for our use. The owner, Orsi, was wonderful and easy to work with and responsive to all the questions we had. The pictures posted are 100% accurate. We enjoyed our visit to The Davis Children's Discovery Farm. Since it was spring, we were able to pet and feed all the new baby animals - lambs, goats, etc. There were so many things for my children to do and explore, and we all had a great time. I would recommend this home to others and I look forward to staying again the next time we are in Mass.

We stayed here in February so did not get to enjoy the lake to its fullest (but we did venture out on the ice as there were a few people snowmobiling when we were there). The location was great. Quiet but close to many attractions, especially for kids. We went to the Worcester Armory and Ecotarium and made a day trip over to Amherst and the Eric Carle museum. We had a fabulous meal at Sonoma in Princeton and there were lots of family friendly places to eat in the area.We never made it to the local library but they had some great children's programs from the looks of it. Our kids love the spacious living area and we felt very comfortable in the house. It was toasty warm even when it was freezing outside. The natural light was amazing! There was wireless internet access but only basic cable. That was actually a good thing for us so our kids didn't watch too much TV! The view was beautiful and tranquil and the neighborhood was quiet but not isolated. They had a lot of snow this winter but the owners had the driveway plowed and the paths shoveled out. The driveway is a bit steep if you are there during bad weather but we had no problems getting in or out and I think you could park off the street up top as well. Orsi was very helpful and responsive before and after our visit and it was great having a property manager close by if we needed anything (which we didn't). We would love to return in warm weather and visit the local farms etc.

My son and I came from California to visit family in Worcester and to have some family gatherings away from the city in beautiful small town Massachusetts. We enjoyed our stay at your lake house for Thanksgiving week. My family members who came out to visit for one or more nights liked the place very much too. It is a great pleasure driving on the back roads of the region, with the trees, and farms, and quaint small towns. At the lake house, I love the views, of course. Wish I could post some of the sunrise and sunset photos I took. The remodeled, very convenient kitchen, and all the pots and pans and dishes and serving utensils were very nice to have. The bedding and beds are comfortable and attractive. The deck is huge. And it's nice to have the gas grill. Not to mention the washer and dryer with detergent provided. I was also happy to have the strong wireless connection because I had to work on a project for part of the time I was there, and I was able to connect over the Internet to everything I needed in California and do my work very easily. My cell didn't work at all, but the free phone at the house made up for the lack. Very happy to have found this place! We all made some happy memories there.
