On a Ledge or the "Mountain House" as we call it, is located on the highlands of the Roan in beautiful Roan Mountain, Tennessee.
Our Mountain House is at 4200 feet elevation, overlooking the beautiful Heaton Creek valley. Full length covered porches with a swing and plenty of comfortable chairs offer majestic mountain and valley views and great opportunities to enjoy our cool mountain breezes.
The Cherokee National Forest is a few hundred yards away in most directions and, as the crow flies, the Appalachian trail is less than 2 miles away. By road, Carvers Gap, and the Rhododendron Gardens are 3 miles. The Mountain House is minutes above the Roan Mountain State Park which offers swimming pool, tennis courts, camping, hiking, and fishing. Actually, several hundred miles of trout fishing streams (including the trophy trout designated Watauga river) are within a 30 mile radius.
We are conveniently located just 35 minutes away from the ski resorts, restaurants, and shopping of Banner Elk, Boone, and Blowing Rock, North Carolina.
If you are sitting on our back porch enjoying the view, Nascar racing will seem a world away.....in fact, the Bristol Raceway is a pleasant 50 minute drive away.
We've made our Mountain House comfortable and cozy.....you'll feel right at home, and will want to come back often.
We hope you come visit,
Richard and Martha

Dear Richard and Martha, Thanks for opening your doors to us. Your cabin is the perfect spot to get away from it ALL. We really enjoyed the views and will always have wonderful memories of our "cabin in the clouds". We'll definitely be back...it felt just like being home.Did you find this review helpful? Dear Richard and Martha, Here are the things that made our visit memorable: This is not a cookie cutter cabin; this is a Home. We loved seeing all of your personal touches, from family pictures to Grace Sharpin's Cookbook. It was fun to read thru her receipes and stories. Your lives with each other and your family is refreshing...thank you. We loved your welcoming chalkboard and personal letter of welcome. The view is astounding. My kids couldn't believe how beautiful the view was (and we live in the mountains!) And the humminging birds darting in front of us at the feeder was wonderful to watch. The kids adored having their own "Loft" and the parents loved the master bedroom with a view. Thank you for sharing your slice of heaven with us.Did you find this review helpful? Dear Richard and Martha, Roan Mountain has never been so beautiful as it was from your cabin. So restful and peaceful and solitary...the four of us will always be grateful we found your cabin. Thanks so much for your hospitality.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

Owner info
Year Purchased: 1998
About the owner: We grew up close to the Smokey Mountains and our home is in Maryville, Tn. We bought the Mountain House in 1998 and fell in love with th view and Roan Mountain. So much so that in 2005 when a 75 year old flooded out building in the village of Roan Mountain came up "for sale" we bought it, completely renovated and opened Mad Martha's Cafe and Twigs which sells antiques and "all things of the mountains". We especially enjoy the peacefulness and quiet beauty of Roan Mountain but when we want fine dining or shopping Elizabethton and Johnson City are just 35 minutes down the mountain and Banner Elk, Boone, and Blowing Rock are 35 minutes up the mountain in North Carolina. We'd love to have you come for a visit to our Mountain House and have lunch at Mad Martha's Richard and Martha
