Scallops at the back door
Scallops at the back door
After several scallop trips to St. Joe Bay, we have not found a more comfortable rental than Charla's house. Bayside Cottage is more than just a cottage. It is more like a resort with the privacy of a country home. The bay is only steps away from the back door. Great for kayaking and canoeing! Lots to see and do. You won't go wrong with this rental.

Great owner, house and location!
Great owner, house and location!
We stayed here for a long weekend with our 10 year old, 13 year old and my parents. House set-up was great. Very clean. We usually stay on Cape San Blas but this was so close and so easy to get to the cape, Port St Joe and Apalachicola. The view is amazing. I hate that we missed the sunsets but we were too busy going to dinner! The kids walked out to the bay and saw thousands of fiddler crabs. We also saw horseshoe crabs and some rays and conchs. Great communication with the owner and just an easy stay. Nice parking for my parents' RV as well.

Wonderful Family Vacation
Wonderful Family Vacation
My family, extended family and two dogs recently stayed at the Bayside Cottage and enjoyed every moment. The house was clean, peaceful and we lacked for nothing while there. We were located close to the Cape San Blas beaches and Port St. Joe. We enjoyed watching the sunsets each night over the bay while sitting on the porches, visiting the beaches and taking the boat out each day. The owner was always available and very helpful. We will definitely stay there again!

My husband and I have been coming to St. Joseph Bay for over 20 years during scallop season. We've enjoyed staying at different places along the bay and gulf side. After staying at this bayside cottage, we both feel we have found the best place. The house has an airy open space and faces west for viewing sunsets. The bay is accessible from the house with a short walk to the water's edge. Even though it is further away, we launched our boat from Eagle Harbor at St Joseph's state park which is about a 10-15 minute drive from the house. Rainy weather shut us out of scalloping and fishing several days and we still enjoyed the beauty of the bay from inside the house. The kitchen is well stocked and maintained. The king bed in the master bedroom was very comfortable. Good water pressure in the showers. The sunroom and screened in porch were our favorite places. The info box that the owners have made available contained articles about the local history of nearby places and many could be accessed in an afternoon's drive from the house. The gulf is accessible from Salinas Park but the water there is left murky due to the Apalachicola river washing into the gulf from Indian Pass. The gulf water at the state park is a beautiful blue green and better for swimming in my opinion. The bay is unique and offers glimpses of sea turtles, eagle rays, mantas even, and frequent sightings of sharks, especially juvenile hammerheads. While snorkeling, one often sees starfish, horseshoe crabs, flounder and all kinds of fish on the bottom. I have found a giant Atlantic hermit crab, and the Atlantic dwarf sea horse in this bay, as well as, baby octopus. While I believe there has been a decline in the sea life over the past 20 years, it still affords a view of many different forms of sea life. This coast is a nature's lover's paradise and this bay is unique because it is wide open to the gulf. The owners were very friendly and easy to contact. We enjoyed one meal out at Sunset Grill in town. No complaints there. We'll be back to stay at this location. Great place!

I recently stayed at Bayside Cottage with my son, daughter, son-in law and two very rambunctious Labrador's. The cottage was absolutely perfect. We all had plenty of space, it was very comfortable. The beds and linens were hotel quality and the cottage was spotlessly clean. Charla has all of the little things covered, from seasonings for cooking to a rubber band! Yes I needed one. All the appliances were in good working order. We even played Monopoly for the first time in years! We truly wanted for nothing in the cottage. Now to the location, again perfect. The bay is literally steps away from the cottage. Our dogs enjoyed running around on a sandy spot close to back yard. We kayaked on the bay and enjoyed all that nature had to offer, even caught a couple of fish. We found a gulf side beach less than 5 miles away so we spent our mornings in the bay and afternoons on the beach. It's located not to far from St Joe for those necessary trips to the Piggly Wiggly. The sunsets from the deck were amazing. We tried to plan our evenings around being back in time to sit on the deck and watch the sun sink down below the horizon. We are already planning our return. Depending on your families interests I would recommend Bayside Cottage to anyone unless you are looking for 24/7 entertainment but if your looking for that you wont be headed for the peace, tranquility and nature that The Cape has to offer!

About the owner: As an avid scalloper and snorkeler I have been enjoying the bay for years. When not on the bay I am hiking/walking one of our local areas, bird watching, or enjoying the spring and fall wildflowers. I would be happy to recommend guides for various local outdoor activities from fishing to photography. Please note that we occasionally travel away and have no access to e-mail. If we do not respond shortly we are either working on property or away and either way are without internet access. We will respond just as soon as possible. Thank you for your patience.
Why the Owner Chose Private Homes:
Originally the house was purchased as my personal home and I enjoyed living there and watching the sunsets and wildlife for a few years. It has only recently been rented on a limited basis. I moved to the area after retiring from Gulf Coast Community College in Panama City, FL. I have always been around the water and my family took me scalloping before there was mask, snorkel, fins; they took me crabbing before there were traps.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
You will find the location of the property tranquil. Wildlife viewing is at its best. The most memorable event of my time there was watching a pair of eagles build a nest.
