Horses, sheep and goats frolic in nearby pastures while two Golden Retrievers will gladly show you the way to the beach trail and stairs.

I was looking for a quick 4-day getaway with my 4-legged kids and stumbled upon this cabin in Holmes Harbor. From the driveway to the landscape to the cabin, the owners have truly thought of every detail. The cabin is very clean and well-appointed from the bottle of wine to chocolates on the bedside to dishes in the kitchen to the bowls and towels for your 4-legged kids. The property is very private and quiet. The landscape is beautiful with whimsical art pieces and charming sitting areas. The trail to the beach is a short 7 minute walk, but it is quite steep in some areas so take your time. Booking the cabin was a breeze. Laura was so accommodating and a pleasure to work with. Steve paid us a visit when it snowed unexpectedly checking to see if we needed anything. From handling the reservation to all the detailed touches in the cabin and surrounding areas, you can truly see their passion for making their rental comfortable and welcoming to guests. You will not go wrong with Heron's Roost. Thank you, Laura and Steve... we will certainly be back!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, pet owners, romantic getaway, families with teenagers.

Owner response: Thank you for the positive review. We love it that guests value our little cabin in the woods and come to think of it as "their second home" when on Whidbey. Do come back and tell your friends!

This was the perfect place to hang our hats for the weekend! Not a single thing was forgotten and we very much enjoyed cooking in your beautiful and well-equipped kitchen, feeding the friendly sheep, relaxing with coffee on the blue couch while gazing out the large windows, hiking down to the beach or just sitting in the cozy tv nook. I hope we can come back for and even longer stay, as 3 nights passed all too quickly! Thank you for sharing this wonderful little cabin and the beautiful grounds!Recommended for: Age 55+, romantic getaway, girls getaway.

We booked this very lovely and cozy cabin on short notice for our day trip to the area and could not have been more pleased with the accommodations! The owners, Steve and Laura, have indeed created Nirvana at Herons' Roost! The cabin is very well decorated, safe and clean, and feels like home. Their attention to details are evident, from the welcome basket, maps and tourist pamphlets, to the fully equipped kitchen and the terry cloth robes! The grounds are just wonderful and the gardens offer an idyllic and tranquil refuge for all to wander in its splendor and awe. The Island has a warm and touching spirit as well as the citizens that live there. Herons' Roost is an excellent choice for your stay on south Whidbey Island and we highly recommend it. We look forward to returning in September for our family vacation.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, pet owners, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, sightseeing.

We found this enchanting cabin by chance. The cabin is brand new and clean. The location is a gorgeous forested area. The whole cabin is very tastefully decorated with a big kitchen, living room, den and bedroom. The kitchen has beautiful granite counter tops, lovely alder cabinets and plenty of room to make nice dinners. The bathroom is done in a natural stone that feels like nature came indoors. The windows in all the rooms show off the incredible forest backdrop that is very peaceful and restful. The cabin is surrounded by whimsical outdoor sitting areas. A short hike takes you to the beach. What more could you want for a wonderfully romantic get away? I loved the goats and sheep too. The owners make sure that you are quite comfortable. They are thoughtful to the point where you feel as if you are a guest. It's a keeper, We will go back!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, pet owners, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, families with young children, sightseeing.

Owner info
Year Purchased: 2010
About the owner: Steve and Laura Strehlau have owned their property on Whidbey Island since 1989. Their log home has been featured in local magazines and their garden has been on the Whidbey Island Garden Tour. This newly built cabin is located on the six acres on which their log home is situated. They share their time between their home on Whidbey Island and their home on Maui. They also love to travel and meet new people throughout the world. Animals are a big part of their lives with sheep, goats, a cat and two Golden Retrievers sharing their home.
Why the Owner Chose Holmes Harbor:
With over six acres of forest and beach, we wanted to share our land with others who want a bucolic setting for a vacation. Our vacation rental has just been completed (spring 2010) and is landscaped and ready for more guests. The home is bright and airy though it is located in a stand of 2nd growth Douglas Firs and Western Red Cedars. It offers both the woodlands and the beach, making it an ideal vacation rental. The setting is extremely private and quiet for a retreat like atmosphere. Trail and stairs meander thru huge evergreen and fern filled forest to our secluded beach.
The Unique Benefits at this Cabin:
Beach walking, crabbing in season, salmon fishing and picnicking are just some of the many outdoor activities here. We have even been awakened by barking sea lions and viewed grey whales in the Harbor on occasion. Bald Eagles fly on currents and deer are regular visitors. Being close to Seattle and Everett, Whidbey Island is an ideal getaway for anyone looking for a tranquil weekend or longer vacation. Our village of Langley offers excellent restaurants, shopping, art and entertainment and is only six miles from our door.
