We began relaxing the minute we drove up to the cabin; when we walked in we felt enveloped by its coziness. The cabin is beautifully appointed, comfortable and the kitchen well stocked. The setting is perfect with various places to meditate and enjoy the seclusion of the woods. Our puppy had a great time exploring the grounds and visiting the sheep and goats. The stairway to the beach is quite steep, but very well maintained and definitely worth the hike once you make it to the bottom. The property owner and resident caretaker were very nice and only a phone call away if we needed anything. I highly recommend this property and look forward to our next visit!

I loved Heron's Roost and the beautiful property surrounding it. I definitely want to return. It was so peaceful. We walked on the beach with the mountains "out" and we were the only ones on the beach except the birds. Reading outside in the many special places, even though it was January, was lovely. We walked on the beautiful trails and the kid goat even danced for us. The cabin was clean, comfortable, well equipped, and enjoyable to stay. The owners gave much thought, creativity, and work in making this a wonderful place to stay. I recommend this place "THEE BEST!"

a surprise awaited when i arrived in the evening... holiday lights twinkling along the driveway. magical! i needed an easy, pet friendly weekend getaway, not far from Seattle. this was a perfect setting, with all the amenities one would need. loved all the supplies prepared for dog owners! bowls, blankets, beds in three different pup sizes. made it easy to comply with pet rules. i spent the weekend simply following owners' suggested local activities & restaurants... among their recommendations, a gorgeous off-leash beach just a few minutes away from the cabin. we spent two afternoons there, and could spend many more... cabin is very clean, all appliances and furniture are in great shape, beautiful finishes throughout, comfy bed... the setting in the woods by the beach peaceful, lots of quiet places to sit & relax. you can tell the owners put a lot of work into making this a very special getaway for their guests. can't recommend this place enough! & will definitely be back!

We really enjoyed our stay here. Very quiet and secluded with whimsical trails and grounds. Our puppy enjoyed the trails and the fenced-in sheep and goats. It is close to the water--we could just see the bay through the trees from the house, although it is a very steep trail down to the beach. Due to the high tide and steep trail, we spent most of our beach time at the Double Bluff dog park about 5 miles away (we spent most of our time cuddled up in the cottage playing games and watching videos from their video library). The house is lovely--cozy and modern. We definitely plan to come back!

If you want a place away from the hustle and bustle, this is it. Very quaint and beautiful setting. The living room and kitchen are amazing. A little office/den as well. They do have wifi, so if you want to watch a movie, bring a hdmi if your laptop supports it to stream netflix. The grounds are beautiful. I would love to be there when it snows. Very romantic. The stairs to the beach are a good hike, but the views are well worth it! Next time we may bring our dog! She would have loved it there! I will plan on coming here again.

This cottage is absolutely perfect. It is surrounded by park-like towering Douglas fir, white fir and western red cedar as well as tons of flowering shrubs. The cottage is private and extremely quiet but only minutes away from both Freeland and Langley. We have rented it many times in the past 3 years and it is always pristine and clean. The large patio area is great for small campfires, socializing and relaxing. You can access the beach via a short trail or via a paved road just up the street for the mobility impaired or walking challenged. All you have to do is ask the owners for assistance…they are very quick to respond to any request. Enjoy your stay, but treat the cottage with respect because we will continue to come back to this slice of heaven on earth.

Very comfortable stay. Well stocked kitchen, huge refrigerator. Bathroom has heated floors. Wonderful hosts next door, but their home is not within sight of cabin. Very comfortable master bed. Cabin is a quick drive to Freeland and Langley. Beautiful view of Holmes Harbor from beachfront. The walk to the beach is a short hike and adventure in itself.

Five of us (two parents, three young kids) stayed here for three nights, and really enjoyed our stay. The property is absolutely beautiful, secluded, and a great place for kids to play. The beach was nice, but be advised it is a 5-7 minute HIKE to the beach, not a nice stroll as I had imagined. Steep stairs going down the face of a cliff to the beach. The cabin was great, everything we expected, there is a nice little TV nook off of the main room that can be closed off with sliding doors, so that was nice to have. We did have some difficulty communicating with the owner and only after several emails did she answer our rental request. There seemed to be a problem with mildew in the washing machine and bathroom, which produced an unpleasant smell, and was particularly irksome for me as I suffer from allergies. The advertised fire pit was practically unusable because the bottom was burned totally through. The owner has been alerted to these and a few other small problems (maintenance and cleanliness issues) and I'm sure they will be taken care of quickly.

I was looking for a quick 4-day getaway with my 4-legged kids and stumbled upon this cabin in Holmes Harbor. From the driveway to the landscape to the cabin, the owners have truly thought of every detail. The cabin is very clean and well-appointed from the bottle of wine to chocolates on the bedside to dishes in the kitchen to the bowls and towels for your 4-legged kids. The property is very private and quiet. The landscape is beautiful with whimsical art pieces and charming sitting areas. The trail to the beach is a short 7 minute walk, but it is quite steep in some areas so take your time. Booking the cabin was a breeze. Laura was so accommodating and a pleasure to work with. Steve paid us a visit when it snowed unexpectedly checking to see if we needed anything. From handling the reservation to all the detailed touches in the cabin and surrounding areas, you can truly see their passion for making their rental comfortable and welcoming to guests. You will not go wrong with Heron's Roost. Thank you, Laura and Steve... we will certainly be back!

                      Owner info

                      Year Purchased: 2010

About the owner: Steve and Laura Strehlau have owned their property on Whidbey Island since 1989. Their log home has been featured in local magazines and their garden has been on the Whidbey Island Garden Tour in 2007 & 2011. This newly built cabin (800 sq ft) is located on the six acres on which their log home is situated. They share their time between their home on Whidbey Island and their home on Maui. They also love to travel and meet new people throughout the world. Animals are a big part of their lives with sheep, goats, a cat and two Golden Retrievers sharing their home.

Why the Owner Chose Holmes Harbor:
With over six acres of forest and beach, we wanted to share our land with others who want a bucolic setting for a vacation. Our vacation rental has just been completed (spring 2010) and is landscaped and ready for more guests. The home is bright and airy though it is located in a stand of 2nd growth Douglas Firs and Western Red Cedars. It offers both the woodlands and the beach, making it an ideal vacation rental. The setting is extremely private and quiet for a retreat like atmosphere. Trail and stairs meander thru huge evergreen and fern filled forest to our secluded beach.

The Unique Benefits at this Cabin:
Beach walking, crabbing in season, salmon fishing and picnicking are just some of the many outdoor activities here. We have even been awakened by barking sea lions and viewed grey whales in the Harbor on occasion. Bald Eagles fly on currents and deer are regular visitors. Being close to Seattle and Everett, Whidbey Island is an ideal getaway for anyone looking for a tranquil weekend or longer vacation. Our village of Langley offers excellent restaurants, shopping, art and entertainment and is only six miles from our door.
