We love Casa Roca and our time in Bocas del Toro!!! The house is in an amazing place, just in front of the sea. The sunset from the balcone is incredible! Everything was fine except the Sky that didn`t work and the bed of the second room that makes too much noise. The guy that takes care of the house, Antonio, is very nice and helpful. I have just one suggestion for the owners: maybe you can find a way to use the water from the sea or the sinks for the toilettes to reduce the chances to lack water in case of lack of rain. We hope to come back soon!

Owner response: Thanks so much for the review Angela. So sorry about the satellite tv problem, I think we have that solved. Also, I will have our crew fix the noisy bed. It's fairly rare that we don't have enouth water, but it can happen as the whole Island depends on the rain. I will look into your idea about the seawater. Hope to have you back again. Jerry

We had a phenomenal stay at Casa Roca during February break. The property was immaculate and beautifully maintained, and the staff was wonderful and very helpful to address all of our needs. We loved spending time with Antonio, the caretaker! The house was better than the photos, I still picture myself relaxing in the hammock overlooking the ocean drinking my coffee. My children, ages 8 and 6, returned to school telling of the geckos and crabs that they loved trying to catch in Bastimentos! A couple of nearby activities that are do not miss include Up in the Hill cafe, the hike to Wizard Beach, Red Frog Beach, and definitely a tour of the bat cave! Ricki was a very helpful and reliable water taxi driver that took care of us all week. The owner and the manager were both available for all questions and concerns that we had before, during, and after our stay. I highly recommend Casa Roca to anyone who is looking for a relaxing adventure in paradise!

The setting of this rental was picture perfect, although a little difficult to get to as my husband had hurt his knee elsewhere in Panama but still loved it. The house was well set up with the dishes, appliances etc. and clean, (would suggest perhaps though that the linens be updated/freshened up a bit as they were worn). The caretaker was a very kind, courteous man who was very diligent in his duties and the owner that we dealt with was very good at answering any enquiries we had. The only concern we had, is that it had not rained on the island for awhile and water supply was down , but the skies opened up a couple of nights and we were OK. Was not overly impressed with the property Manager but worked around that. All in all a very great week. .

Casa Roca was excellent. The house exceeded our expectations we had from the pictures. It is a little bigger than the pictures appear. It is 5-10 minute walk to 'town' in Bastimentos along the ocean, its a nice walk. The beds in the house are real comfortable, with the exception that the second bedroom bed is extremely squeeky. I mean it is squeaky to the point of being comical. Maybe the owners could do something about it. This is no deal breaker by any means, just somethign that could be fixed. The AC is both rooms work really well, though not necessarily needed. Shower in the master bath is nice. The caretakers (1 during the weekends and 1 during the week) were friendly and helpful. They were always around to keep an eye on the house. It is worth noting, as was expected, that the house has self contained water system based on rainfall. Keep this in mind for when you travel. I expected this based on my travels through South America, but figured it was worth mentioning. The house is a 35 or so minute walk (10ish being through town and the rest on a beautiful jungle trail) to Wizard Beach. This beach is fantastic. Secluded and beautiful. Well worth the trek unless it has rained A LOT and then the trail is pretty muddy. It is a 10 minute boat ride to the red frog beach compound and another 10 minute walk from there to get to red frog beach. Another nice beach with a restaurant or two, very beutiful, but not as secluded as Wizard. As another review mentioned, Tyson the property manager set us up with Ricki (a local boat driver) when we first arrived. We got Ricki's number. Although he is a little bit more expensive it seems than other boat drivers, he was the nicest and was very reliable. We only saw Tyson once, but he answered or called back immediately the few times that we called him for advice. The owners of the house were very responsive to all emails within a short time period. I talked to one of them on the phone during the booking process and he was a real nice guy. Find Bushmans. Its a little house that is also a restaurant in Bastimentos on the left side of the main walkway past the dock heading from the house. It is extremely slow, order at 4 get food at 6, but is expected as island time plays in. Either way, some of the best food we have ever had. Overall, the house was excellent and if and when we return to Bastimentos, we will stay here again!

Owner response: Thanks Rod for the great review. Sorry about the squeaky bed, Tyson is on it! You guys are just the thpe of adventurers that Casa Roca is made for. Hope to Have you again in the future.

This place was even better than we expected. As many reviewers had said, it feels like a little slice of paradise. The house itself is comfortable, with very good air-conditioning which we used all but one night. But the idyllic spot is what takes the cake--with the waves of the Caribbean lapping up to the rocky shoreline just below the expansive, wrap-around deck, glorious views with calming jungle and sea everywhere you look. Morning coffee on the deck was a joy. I spent hours in the hammock reading each day, and into the night. The house is on the breezy side of the island, so every time we'd round the bend from town, the temperature dropped and the breeze began and we felt like we were home. Some days were barely wanted to go anywhere. We'd cozy up to one of the local dogs we temporarily adopted and just stay put. The house is an 8-10-minute walk to the small town of Bastimentos (Old Bank). Some reviewers found the town and the walk to the house tough to get used to. We didn't have this experience. If you're used to leafy American suburbs, this may be unfamiliar terrain. But that's why we travel! Most of the local residents are indifferent to vacationers, which is usually refreshing compared to places where visitors are constantly harassed. The town has a dusty general/grocery store and a handful of cute restaurants--basically shacks over the water serving pretty yummy food. In addition to the "downtown," there are a few outposts that offer lovely spots to eat, drink and relax, including Up in the Hill café and Mantis--both worth the 20-minute hike to visit. The highlight of our stay was eating, drinking and relaxing at the new Firefly, a small B&B with a few guest rooms and a gorgeous seaside deck and bar. It's a 2-minute walk from Casa Roca. Lauren and Ryan, the super-friendly American couple who run it, serve food that is joltingly good--hard to believe you can be in this remote outpost and savor tastes like that. Just a few negatives: We were expecting just the basics, and that's fine, but there were some items a house like this should have. There were no matches to light the stove, and no indication it needed them to light! There was no salt in the salt shaker. There was no DVD player as advertised. And there was no flashlight, which is a must if you plan to go anywhere at all at night, as the beach path is booby-trapped with rocks and small ditches. Finally, realize the house is not totally secluded, but is visible to the next door house.

Owner response: Thanks Nathaniel, we really apreciate your review. Love turning thre corner from town and experiencing the cool trade winds! Sorry about the few problems that you had. We will get another DVD player. Salt, Flaslights and matches are also on Tyson"s list. It's experienced and adventerous travelers like you that we love having stay at Casa Roca. Hope to have you again! Jerry

We want to love this place, it grew on us during our stay and we miss it now that we are home. Not the Ritz! It is very funky & with the very bare basics. It is difficult to access by water taxi, if the surf is too high. There is no beach out front & a hike to the nearest beach is about 45 minutes. It is situated in a beautiful private remote area of the island. The dock was destroyed from a recent storm and we arrived by water taxi from Bocas Town to Bastimentos town in the dark. Property manger Tyson (A younger ex-pat from the States) met us at the airport and took us to Bocas Town for groceries. Bastimentos Town has a crappy store with a rude shop owner that speaks no English. Only use it if you have to. We wish we had time to shop at Super Gourmet in Bocas town but they were closed when we arrived. We discovered it the next day, the best place to shop in Bocas town. The walk from the Bastimentos Town to Casa Roca takes getting used to. It is a 10 minute walk through extreme poverty, trash, un-neutered dogs sometimes fighting and lots of chickens. The locals glare at you, as you walk past them. English is definitely not spoken on the island, as it is in Bocas town. Make sure you know some Spanish. Caretaker Felix was with us for one night and then Antonio and his family arrived for the next 4 days. They stay next door. The best part of the trip was trying to communicate with each other. Antonio & his family were delightful. They try to help you in every way possible, They are very poor and we bought them some groceries a few times. They helped us to obtain water taxis, we finally were able to use the dock out front and that saved walking to town for supplies and the water taxi to Bocas. Having the dock out front made all the difference. You will love this place if you want solitude and are ok with funky. It is definitely for the more adventurous. We loved eating at local Alvin Cafe, meeting Calypso Joe and meeting Amy at Mantis Cafe up the big hill. Just remember to buy everything if you are going to cook. There is nothing in the kitchen, no big deal - Just a mention and buy lots of big jugs of bottled water, paper towles and extra toilet paper and a wine opener and you will be fine and cash to tip the caretakers, who were a delight. They are around only when you need them. We will be back, more prepared. Just make sure you are ready for a hike to and from the Casa and to the nearest beaches. Rent this place for soiltude and you will be fine.

Owner response: I hope visitors to our website will read the other reviews about our house and especially the town and people of Bastimentos. We make a point to tell everyone that Casa Roca is not for everyone, Visitors should be in good shape and not have a problem with the 5-10 minute walk from Bastimentos Town. The dock should be treated as a bonus, sometimes it is usable for arrival/departures but when the surf is up, it is not. The plus side to our location is that it faces right into the prevailing trade winds and it is always much cooler that town. We have to take exception a bit with the comments about our caretakers being "very Poor" as we pay them substantially more than the going pay rates and cover their families medical expenses and social security as well as paid vacations. The people of Bastimentos for the most part are poor but they are very friendly and always ready to help. I don't think these people consider themselves poor, in fact there is much to be admired about there basic lifestyle, centered around family, school and church. So many of our guests feel meeting the locals was one of the best parts of their trip. Yes, the house is basic, but considering it's location on the edge of the rain forest, it is fairly well equipped, Satellite TV, Internet access (yes it can be slow) AC's in both bedrooms. If you are looking for a resort, Casa Roca is not for you. If you are open to adventure, nature and seeing the culture the way it really is , you will probably really enjoy your visit.

Awesome, awesome location. If you want to get away from the hustle and bustle then Bastimentos is the place to go. No roads, no cars. The house is in a great location too. It is about a 5-10 minute walk to the little dock and store on the island. So close enough to pick up water etc but far enough that you cannot hear any noise (they like to play reggae loud on the island). We spent a month there and loved it. The place is right on the waterfront and although there isnt a beach there is a spot to swim and snorkel. Owners are great and very helpful. Felt safe and secure there. Overall absolutely loved the place (secret tip: turn right out of the house and walk 30 minutes along the ocean front and you'll come to a lovely little private beach that really IS paradise (and you'll not see anyone there the whole day ... well ... maybe now I've given it away you will). My only criticism is that all the stuff in the kitchen is literally the cheapest one could possibly buy. I think the price is high enough to warrant some decent knives, chopping boards, pots and pans. It is a minor gripe, but it would have improved our stay to have access to pots that had handles that hadnt fallen off (we cooked every day for ourselves as there isnt much vegetarian food available)! The place is nice, but could probably do with a bit of a freshen up. Thus my 'good' rating rather than 'excellent'.

Owner response: Thanks so much for the review. It has been hard to buy quality kitchen supplies locally (everything is from China) Thus we have instructed our property manager to use a service that will re-supply our kitchen with Items purchased in David. Thank you for your input.

We couldn't have been happier with our stay at Casa Roca. It was everything and more than we hoped for. We were looking for a place to rent for two weeks in Panama so meet up with our Daughter and Son in law who are backpacking thoughout Central America. Casa Roca was perfect. Every morning we would get up and open the place up and drink coffee and plan what we would do that day! Some days were perfect just hanging out at the house. We enjoyed the walk to Old Bank, although you have to be in good physical shape to do this. There are no cars or bikes on the entire island. The people in Old Bank were lovely. Never did we have someone trying to hustle us for anything. So refreshing!!!! Boat taxis were very easy to get we paid $3.00 pp to Bocas Town. Our favorite place to go was Red Frog Beach, The price varried to go there as the boat taxi would arrange for our return as well. It is the prettiest Beach and it has a lovely little bar & grill that we made full use of! We met a family of brothers that live in Old Bank and they were very helpful. One brother Carl, and his boat "Shaunice" took us out for a day of fishing. We caught over 80lbs. of Spanish Mackrel! He and his brother taught us how to handline fish as they do down there. We all decided to keep using poles! Casa Roca was so great to come back to every afternoon. We were very secluded and we never felt uncomfortable with that, We were looking for a great place to have quality time with our kids. We would sit out at night and enjoy the lovely sunsets and stars then we would close up the house and we had two bedrooms that were air conditioned so sleeping was great. Felix the grounds keeper was great to have around, most helpful. By far the best vacation we ever had! We were in Paradise for those two weeks!

This was my second time staying at Casa Roca. Hopefully, it will not be my last. I took a different group of friends and decided that we needed to stay an extra couple of days. After last year, I needed to have a full week at the house. My friends were in love by the end of the trip....with Bastimentos. The people, food, and just how beautiful it is. It is so peaceful at the house. Nothing like beginning and ending a day, sitting on the porch, listening to the waves crash. Again, Tyson, the property manager was very helpful as well as Felix the caretaker. It was amazing to see most of the same people working on the island. We once again had Ricardo (Ricky) as our water taxi driver...love him! The house was just as beautiful and it was nice to have a little beach out front to sit on. Next time, maybe it will have to be a 2 week stay!

We had a fabulous time! We swam and snorkled right out in front of the beach house. There was good surfing just a short water taxi ride away. Carlito was a wonderful guide (just ask anyone in Basimentos how to find him). He took us to great places to snorkle and fish. He is great to talk to about getting fresh lobster to cook. Ask Carlito about the thatched beach bars and lunch places that you can get to by water taxi. They are lots of fun with great views. The beach house has a great deck to sit on and enjoy sunsets and toast to relaxing days. It was the just what we needed to get away from it all.

Hey guys Thanks for the opportunity to stay at Casa Roca. We loved the house...the location was beautiful. Tyson (property manager) was very helpful and friendly. We want to let you know also that Felix (neighborring security) was an outstanding security guard too !!! We had a couple taxi guys help carry groceries up to the house and as soon as they made it up the stairs Felix appeared out of no where and waited for them to leave and walked them down the stairs and off the property ...we though it was funny, and my wife felt very good about safety after that. The location was a 5-10 minute walk from Bastimentos town where we were able to have taxis drop us off. The walk to th house was worth it and part of the experience. Lots of small and very large crabs and hemit crabs. My advice to visitors...if you go grocery shopping and have lots of bags just offer the taxi drivers a few bucks to help carry stuff to the house. Scenery was great, all i had to do was lean over the patio hand rail to get 'red frogs' on video...view of lots of fruits and strange trees and birds... perfect view of the ocean. We had a great time and will reccomend your house to people we meet or know. We bought a house on San Cristobal island so we will start spending the winters down there as of next year. ok thanks again... John and Brenna... and Keltan

Previous to our arrival we had several conversations with the owner of the property. He assured us we would have a truly enjoyable experience and that could not be more true. The home was better than we could imagine. Everything was exactly as described. When we arrived we were met at the airport by the property manager, who took us to the local store. After which we took a water taxi (ask for Ricky) to the property. As we approached the property we were greeted by the caretaker, who truly took his title literally. He took great care of the property and addressed our needs. When we opened the door, the first thing I noticed was all the homey touches and the island feel. The first day we went into town, we knew that it would be an experience of a lifetime. The locals welcomed us from the first moment they saw us. We ate at the local restaurants (Roots), the best catch of the day, you would ever eat. We snorkeled everyday, most days from the ocean in front of the house. We enjoyed a catamaran tour to Dolphin Bay and found the Captain Marcell very knowlagable about the area. Make sure you don't miss Red Frog Beach, they really are red frogs. Spend your time on Bastementos, and appreciate the true culture of these wonderful people. I would like to share a story about the people of Bastementos, My son, Jesse, who is 16 years old and, has Down Syndrome. One, morning at about 6 AM, I woke and took my coffee onto the deck to enjoy the beautiful sunrise. A few minutes later one of the local women approached from town and in tow was my son Jesse. Jesse deceided he wanted to go home and be with his dog. This could have been a tragic story if not for the kindness of the local people of Bastementos. Someone asked, if I would go back. 1000 times yes and I would stay in the same house.

My wife and five year old son stayed here in May and had an excellent time. My son busied himself catching frogs and lizards outside from the moment we arrived until the moment we left. It was the perfect vacation for a curious five year old boy. You will not be disappointed by this house, it is charming, comfortable, bended to the surroundings and a great value. It is tucked away in the jungle, on a rock beach and has an impressive view with has all the amenities of home. We used to live on Ambergris Caye, Belize and found this to be a wonderful contrast to our experience there. Basimentos has a more authentic island feel as it is still off the beaten path and very unspoiled. We found the locals respectfully friendly and not the least bit aggressive. Absent were the constant nuisances such as time share salesmen, crack dealers, the fear of petty theft and out of control development that is found in more heavily tourist-ed vacation destinations such as Ambergris Caye. We felt very safe. A local caretaker that lived next door kept an eye on us from afar and was very helpful lining up outings such as fishing, cave exploring and a visit to a local cocoa farm. Had the care taker not of been there we would of felt safe. He provided added peace of mind and was very helpful. It was the perfect vacation for myself my wife and my five year old boy. We are planing to return in a few months. I pray that any development that occurs on the island is carefully controlled so that this island does not go the way of Ambergris Caye. If your looking for a laid back vacation, off the beaten path, authentically Caribbean I recommend Casa Roca.

Myself and 3 friends stayed here the end or March beginning of April of 2011. As mentioned in other reviews..the house was just as great as the photos, if not better. The views from the front porch made it very easy to just want to stay there in a rocking chair all day and night. There was ac in the rooms which was perfect for sleeping considering the weather was beautifully hot....we had just come from chicago where the weather left more to be desired...so this was the perfect get away. Overall, we loved Bastimentos over the other islands and the location of the house was perfect...close enough to walk to different places to eat and drink and a little store where you could pick up essentials. We also felt like the food was better on Bastimentos (side note). The owner of the property was extremely helpful and tried to accomadate us the best he could and was very knowledgeable about the area. Jenica was also extremely helpful and willing to help us in any situation. It was very nice to have her pick us up from the airport and show us the ins and outs of the Bocas area. It was also very nice to have Dimitry, the caretaker, around the property. He was a very nice guy, very willing to answer any questions or run to the store...whatever we needed... we ended up using his knowledge of the area quite a bit. My friends and I both agree we would come back and stay in a heart beat. Loved it! Thanks to everyone that helped to make our trip so easy and relaxing....

I spent a week at this house and it was the best. I will be returning next summer. It was very economical and near everything. The owner has a caretaker for the house that is very helpful, even picked us up at the airport! The owners of the home were very helpful in everyway; from having the hgome stocked with food, to suggesting places to visit. This house is great for the adventurous type. Explore behind the house and find 3 color salamanders, red frogs, birds of all types...the snorkeling/scuba diving, biking, cave exploration, Starfish beach (pick up dozens of them!). Rent the house and enjoy Bocas del Toro. I went from July 10 to July 17, 2010. It was great!!

We stayed at Casa Roca from Feb 20 - Mar 2, 2010 and loved every minute of it. The location was ideal- Bastimentos was by far our favorite island in Bocas del Toro due to the presence of the local culture and food, and the house is in the perfect spot on Bastimentos. Just far enough away from town to mean we heard only the surf and birds, yet close enough to walk there easily for a meal or water taxi ride to Bocas or elsewhere, and plenty of breeze, unlike on the leeward side of the island. Bastimentos is fairly primitive, which is what we were looking for, but the house has all the comforts of home. The perfect combination! Things were spotlessly clean and fully provisioned for us when we arrived, and having the caretaker next door made it easy when we needed more supplies. We spent many, many hours just relaxing on the front porch, enjoying the view, and can't wait to do it again. Great place!

Recommended for: Adventure seekers, tourists without a car, sightseeing.
