Lovely Stay at Tipi
Hi Bill. We had a lovely stay at your Tipi last Friday. If we were to be interested in booking another stay for Aug 2014, when might you be accepting 2014 bookings? The highlight for our kids was your cat. They have done nothing but talk about “Camping Kitty” since the stay. It was hard to get them to take a short walk to the river in case Camping Kitty went missing in their brief absence. Thanks

Recent stay at the tipi
Recent stay at the tipi
We recently spent a night in the tipi. We expected a fairly rustic experience, and that is what we had. We enjoyed the bathhouse, it was well designed and nicely maintained. The kitchen area was functional. We expected mosquitoes, but we didn't expect 15 bites each in one night even with a mosquito coil, citronella candle, and mosquito repellant. We also didn't expect the quarter-sized wolf spider under the pillow. We were excited to hear there was wifi, but we could not find a signal during our stay. We walked around the property looking for a signal while trying to stay out of the cabin private areas but could not find one. One thing we didn't know, and wasn't included in the listing, was that the nearest cell signal for AT&T and carriers other than Verizon was 24 miles away. We also didn't know that the tipi came with its own resident cat. Kitty was friendly and generally well behaved, but I have bad allergies, so it was a huge problem for us since the bed covers and pillows were covered in orange cat hair. It was also a problem when kitty jumped up on the bed, startling us awake at 4 am, 5 am, 6 am, and 7:15 am. Without cell service, it was impossible to contact the owners, so we did not stay the second night. I notified the owners via e-mail the evening of 7/14 and have not heard back from them.

Owner response: Staying in our beautiful Tipi is indeed a unique experience. It is called GLAMPING (short for glorified camping). Anyone camping, whether it is in a tent, tipi, yurt, etc. has to be realistic and expect mosquitoes, bugs, etc. God put them on this earth, and, as much as I wish I could, I cannot make them go away. That is why we recommended to you that you put on mosquito repellent, not just bring it. As far as a “wolf spider” found in your bed, really? I had to look it up online just to see what you were talking about. You certainly pulled out a name that sounds scary. I must say, that I have lived in this area for 18 years, and never have I seen a “wolf spider.” Hmm? Yes, wifi can be an issue out in the woods. We have a satellite system here and sometimes the signal is strong and sometimes it is weak, depending on the weather. Yes, we do have a cabin cat. Her name is Pita and she loves people. We took her away for a while thinking she might be a pest, but we had so many requests from our repeat customers that we bring her back as they missed her. Sadly enough, because of your complaint, we will likely take her away again. I am sorry your experience was not entirely a pleasant one for you. I would strongly recommend that the next time you want to come to the mountains for a get-a-way, you look to stay in a traditional cabin and not a “glamping” experience.
Memorable Weekend Getaway
Memorable Weekend Getaway
Our family just returned from a great weekend stay in the tipi and are already talking about returning next year. The tipi is quite spacious and nicely/simply appointed (the pictures capture it well). It has a very comfortable bed with down comforter and our two kids (ages 2 and 6) slept on the cots with sleeping bags (provided). The kitchen area was equipped with all we needed, including a new gas stovetop and small fridge (we brought plates, utensils, etc, though much of that was already in the kitchen as well). And the bath house was very clean and pleasant to use with plenty of clean, white towels. We hung out around the fire pit every night and were pleased to find no mosquitos! We are used to tent camping, so this was a fun, less rustic alternative for us. Bill came by a couple times and was very kind and helpful, giving us good advise on hiking options. We went on some great hikes in the area, including to Packwood Lake, Mt Saint Helens (Windy Ridge) and -- our favorite -- Mount Rainier's Skyline Trail Loop at Paradise Inn. The drive to Paradise Inn was about 1 hour, but it was beautiful taking route Route 12 past Packwood and then 123/Steven's Canyon Road. Fields of wildflowers and stunning views of Rainier and the snow-capped Goat Rocks made for an amazing day of hiking. It is crowded (I would certainly avoid going on a weekend) but the views along the entire trail are fantastic. There is so much more we want to explore in the area - we can't wait to return next summer. Even our 2 year old is missing it -- so far every night since we've been back she tells us "i want tipi, i want tipi!")

Wonderful stay at Tatoosh Tipi
Wonderful stay at Tatoosh Tipi
My husband and I just stayed at the tipi with out 8 month old son. We enjoyed the experience very much. The tipi was just beautiful and so impressive. The bathhouse facilities were nice with fresh towels and soap. We really enjoyed the use of the new looking barbeque and had a great time sitting on the little deck watching the stars. Overall the amenities are great. You feel like you are roughing it, but it's not too "rough." I would highly recommend the tipi adventure of a couple or small famly. We brought our own crib for our son and there was PLENTY of room alongside the bed in the tipi. I was concerned about the tipi getting too hot since it was a very warm summer day. This was no issue though. A very fun experience!

About the owner: Our names are Bill & Tricia Meier and we are the proud owners of these beautiful Cowlitz River Cabins & Tipi. Each is named appropriately, starting with the RAINIER LOG HOUSE, THE ADAMS CHALET, THE ST HELEN’S COTTAGE. And last but not least is our beautiful TATOOSH TIPI. As far back as our dating years, we had dreamed of moving out of the city of Olympia and building a log house somewhere high in a mountainous area. About 10 years ago, we got serious and started our search throughout Washington and Oregon for land that would be just the right fit for us. Within a year we stumbled onto this piece of ground and it was love at first site. Finding these 8 acres of land was the beginning of making our dreams come true. Within 2-years of our purchase, we packed up our belongings and moved out to our 8 acre piece of Packwood Heaven.
Why the Owner Chose Packwood:
The first of our cabins to be built was the Rainier Log House. Our plan had always been to purchase a log house kit, but Bill decided he desired an AUTHENTIC log house and he wanted to master the construction himself from top to bottom. So after purchasing a used boom truck and enough logs from a neighbor logging who was logging his property, Bill was on his way. The Rainier Log House was his first masterpiece. Next came THE ST. HELENS COTTAGE and THE MT. ADAMS CHALET soon followed. Then about a year ago, we decided to offer our guest another unique experience by erecting an authentic 22' Tipi complete with all the comforts of home. It has all been an adventurous labor of love. We hope, whichever of our beauties you choose, you will make memories to last forever.
