We have a child's gate on the deck and fencing and gates on the property to keep small children from getting to the river. However, no fence or gate is as adequate as keeping a close watch on your children. On the river is a natural rock slab with pockets of sand and water that children love to play in. A plastic bucket and shovel are a nice thing to bring with you....moreless

We loved the Riverside Retreat!
We loved the Riverside Retreat!
The Riverside Retreat was exactly what we needed for a relaxing and uplifting vacation. Being so close to the river was such a treat; the sound of the water is very therapeutic! The Riverside Retreat is "rustic" but extremely comfortable. One feels very close to nature. We loved exploring the Lakes Basin, and be sure to take the short walk to the waterfall! We definitely would recommend this property to our friends - and we hope to return in the future.

Great, helpful owners
Great, helpful owners
Our family of 4 stayed at Riverside Retreat for 10 days for a mountain biking vacation. It is a comfortable house that is well equipped and nicely furnished. Anything needed is quickly provided by the owners, who also happen to be the best local trail and fishing advisers. Downieville is a small town with limited dining options so, we enjoyed barbequeing on the deck every night with the scenic river adjacent. It is a very private spot in a charming former mining town, just a stroll away from the village grocery and bike shop. Not a problem for us but a long outdoor staircase leads to the house from the parking place, something that could challenge those with bad knees. I would recommend this house to outdoor enthusiasts or those seeking a retreat. Don't miss a hike up the Sierra Buttes.

We had a too-short 3-night stay in mid July. We loved it that my 15-yr-old son and his friend were able to fish right in front of the deck on the Downie or could walk upstream to Pauley Creek and downstream to the Yuba. We also enjoyed the convenience of the stores and swimming holes within walking distance but treasured the serenity of this house. The deck was a nice place to start the day with a cup of coffee and end it with a glass of your favorite beverage. Our annual visit to the Sierras wouldn't be complete without a trip to the Lakes Basin to take in one or more of many beautiful lakes to swim, hike or fish, then ending the day with a stop at Basset's for an ice cream. My 18-yr-old daughter just blurted out last night that she wished we were still there!

Awesome location :)
Awesome location :)
We stayed for 3 nights over Memorial Day weekend and had an absolutely wonderful time. We arrived after dark Friday and met our charming host Scott who had kindly turned on the gas heater before we arrived which meant the house was nice and toasty. The floor plan worked out perfectly for our party. The grandmother and her companion slept in the downstairs room and the four of us (2 adults, 1 two year old and 1 four year old) slept in the upstairs room. Downstairs there is the couch area in front of the gas fireplace, a dining area with large table that literally overlooks the river, a big open space with a rug that was the default hang-out area for the kids and a large little-kid-safe deck next to the river. The electrical was modern, the floor looked new, the house was clean, we all took showers and *never* ran out of hot water, and the kitchen was well stocked with usable equipment. Although I tend to travel with what I consider important cooking equipment, I did make great use of the wisk, lemon juice maker and tea kettle. When we mentioned there were champagne glasses but not wine glasses, Scott left some wine glasses on the porch (and some more kid games!). Downieville itself is absolutely worth a trip and the house itself is in a perfect location- about four minutes walk from the 'town center'. We spent at least a day and a half walking about, throwing stones in the river, visiting the water falls, eating at the pizzeria and chatting with people about town. We also also took a day trip that included the Kentucky Mine tour (very highly recommended), Sierra City and the Sierraville hot springs- and on the way home stopped in Nevada City for some coffee and window shopping. Next time we hope to take some longer hikes and bike rides- according to people we met, there are some awesome bike trails and hiking trails starting about 10 minutes walk from the house. Oh, and we're not into fishing but apparently the fishing up there is excellent.

Year Purchased: 2009
About the owner: Carol and Scott have spent the last decade working with the Batwa pygmies of SW Uganda. In the 1970s we worked in Kathmandu, Nepal where our youngest son was born. We live next door and Scott is a doc in town. We both love to fly-fish and hike. Life is good!
Why the Owner Chose Downieville:
We have been coming up to this area for years from the time our children were small and when Scott got a job in the area we decided we wanted to buy a place. The property we purchased had two houses on it and we thought why not rent one and let other people enjoy the beauty of this area.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
This a true mountain retreat, close to town but private. If you enjoy nature this is the place to be!
