Sandisfield farmhouse description
When people drive down the charming, winding country road -- past horse farms and working farms with meadow of grazing cows -- to our stately Colonial, embraced by six acres of rolling grounds with bountiful large trees...they say what we first said when we saw it: Wow! It's in a rustic-pastoral setting, but the minute you walk into the commodious house -- stylishly and cheerfully decorated with bright colors and pastels, lovingly appointed and stenciled, full of dried flowers and books -- you know you're in Martha Stewart, not Cotton Mather, territory. It's all light and style -- nothing dark or dowdy.
You enter through a porch into a bright, window-filled modern eat-in kitchen, beyond which is a sunroom with tables, chairs and chaise and flowers, totally ringed by windows looking out on the meadows. Beyond that, the deck for barbequing with the glorious tree.
Next to the kitchen, a dining room with a long handsome dining table -- and one of the house's two computers (this one with Broadband), and printer's discreetly at the end. Next to the dining room, the lovely cozy single bedroom. Across from that, a tumble-marble-floored, elegant sink-and-clawfoot tubbed bathroom...we call it the "ladies bath," because it's perfect for sinking into bath salts and lighting candles. Still downstairs, TWO living rooms -- see the photos: both cozy and fetching, one all pastel and cheery, the other full of antiques and more stately, with a piano. Great for conversation and curling up to read. (Books -- and good, recent ones! -- are, for your pleasure, positioned on tables and bookshelves and nooks all over this house.) A charmingly appointed center hall (hence: center-hall Colonial), with Shaker stairs, joins the two living rooms.
The main route upstairs are the stairs leading up from the kitchen. Upstairs: A two-room bathroom. A master suite -- TV room (Direct TV -- every station known to man) / library (with futon for one or two guests) gives off to a large, light-filled, lovely master bedroom. Look out the huge picture window onto the meadow and flowering maple tree. Across that landing: a second full bedroom, also with great views of lawn and trees and ITS own all-station TV. This bedroom has two single beds that can be pushed together for a couple or separated for siblings or friends. Across a small landing is a cozy office -- another computer (with dial-up) and another futon. All in all, the house sleeps 5 in beds, 8 in beds + futons, and 10 in beds, futons + comfy couches.
This house and its setting has the best of all worlds -- elegant airy furnishings, totally modern convenience, grand lawns, a sense of history you can FEEL (it was built in 1772! It was on the Underground Railroad!) but everything runs smoothly --and nothing feels or looks "old."
As for the setting: You feel secluded from the world...but there are (nice!) neighbors nearby. And -- see below -- fine food stores and skiing and beaching and culture and restaurants and shopping are minutes away.
The Berkshires is a hub of culture -- and the house is right near Jacob's Pillow (unparalleled dance), near Tanglewood (summer home of the Boston Philharmonic), the Norman Rockwell Museum, and the galleries and fine stores and gourmet restaurants of Lenox, Great Barrington, and Stockbridge (the latter town, which Norman Rockwell-- and Arlo Guthrie -- made famous), glorious rolling hills, and the swim-able lakes. There are day spas, yoga classes, miniature (and regular) golf. And during October foliage season -- nothing is more beautiful than the profusion of amazing colors. This is an America that is as charming and quaint Old New England as a picture postcard...yet forward-thinking: churning with high culture, chic stores, and happy vacation activities.. and genuinely NICE people.
Whether you're coming from across the ocean or across the continent, or nearby, you will say what so many of our guests say: "I LOVE this house!"

About the owner: We are both authors (20 books in all) who have written widely and successfully on everything from medieval history to the peak era of popular music. Our home is a haven for creative thinking, writing, and relaxation... while staying connected to the modern world. We are part of the local community, comprised of a warm group of writers, musicians, entrepreneurs, academics, regular people and famous clothing designers (full-timers and weekenders both) who have created a vibrant community arts center (you'll enjoy the film festivals and musical performances!) and who host friendly holiday gatherings -- guests of the house are invited.
Why the Owner Chose Sandisfield:
We looked at the house and its wonderful trees, and fell in love with it before we even walked in. It is located on an idyllic winding dirt country road near horse farms, hiking trails, real farms, and the historic Knox Trail. The house was built in 1772 when America belonged to England, and we are proud to have learned it was a station on the underground railroad. Its elegant history is reflected inside and out, and it inspires and soothes us. It has been great fun for our family, whether our then teenage son or our four- and nine-year-old grand children.
The Unique Benefits at this Farmhouse:
You're in nature - the glorious woods! -- but inside the house, you pamper yourself with its bright, comfy furnishings and modern amenities. Around you there are working farms - great for kids to see horses, cows, pigs and chickens - but THE HOUSE IS five minutes away from an excellent full service country store and ALSO fine fish store (and a laundromat and a bank and a hardware store). And it's ten minutes away from the best, kid-filled sand beach in the Berkshires -- Monterey Beach, in the charming town of the same name. The property is also close to Jacob's Pillow, Tanglewood, Lenox, Stockbridge and - our favorite - Great Barrington. Culture, cuisine, people watching, theater- and movie- and concert-going, and shopping galore! Plus: You're five minutes away from the big, rollicking Otis Reservoir where you can rent motor boats and eat hot dogs. In winter, you're five minutes away from Otis Ridge skiing. and, year-round, YOU'RE twenty minutes from the huge mini-city OF designer outlet shops (great bargains!) in Lee!
