Unaka Cabin is a historic log cabin constructed in the mid 1800's from logs cut on the property. It has been renovated with all customary comforts but with a style that preserves its historic charm and character. It offers privacy while being only 1 mile from the town of Monteagle, police and fire. Unaka Cabin is located on the property formerly known as Camp Unaka, a girls camp which ran from 1911 until 1936. Unaka means 'falling waters' in Cherokee and undoubtedly refers to the two large waterfalls that are clearly visible from the rear of the cabin in the fall and spring but lulls you to sleep all year long. Unaka Cabin was for years the summer home of the noted Methodist Bishop of Tennessee, Vanderbilt Trustee and friend of President Teddy Roosevelt, E.E. Hoss.
The large log living room with vaulted ceiling boasts hard wood floors, hand crafted glass windows with transoms above. It has a original wood burning stone fireplace, a bear skin rug on one wall and a beautiful trophy deer on the other. Both bedrooms have private baths and are air-conditioned but rarely needed even on the hottest summer days due to the ever-present cool mountain breezes. The master bedroom has a fabulous valley view from two sides of the king-size bed and has glass doors leading to a large screened porch with bluff views on three sides. The entire log living room is fronted by a large covered front porch with a panoramic view of beautiful sunsets and the valley below all famed by mountains on three sides. The view is considered the finest on the mountain and is almost as spectacular at night as the farms in the valley light up. Unaka Cabin is free from highway noise and the rustling of waterfalls, rushing streams, gentle breeze and frequent song birds are all you hear.
There are wonderful paths down the mountain when your looking for a bit of adventure and it is a short easy walk to the Assembly and all the summer activities for every age. Sewannee, the home of the University of the South is just 6 miles from Monteagle and offers a vast array of activities including uniques eateries, antique and quaint shops filled with works by local artists, the recreational and intellectual offerings of the university and a small stone movie theatre with first run movies for $3.00. Monteagle is close to interesting areas such as Bersheba Springs, Coike Ovens of Tracy City, Jack Daniels Brewery and the many attractions of Nashville, Chattanooga and Atlanta.

About the owner: I am from New Orleans and met my wife in Memphis where we were both teaching. We have two wonderful grown sons and I have been an independent school President and Headmaster for the last 32 years. We have been blessed abundantly by God and are living our dream in Monteagle. I now travel the nation helping schools protect their students from illegal drugs with hair testing. We loved designing and building our new home on the bluff. We enjoy collecting antiques, Broadway theatre, tennis and taking naps and reading on the porches over looking the bluff.
Why the Owner Chose Monteagle: I have not missed a summer in the Assembly in Monteagle in 60 years and it has been a life long dream to have a log cabin on the bluff close by. As a child, I played in this old log cabin on the bluff and my wife and two sons and I have now enjoyed 27 years of 'heaven on earth'. Combine the wonderful activities of the Assembly (one of the last true Chataquas in America) with the privacy and majesty of the cabin on the bluff and it just doesn't get any better than this. We have built a permanent home on the bluff and now are happy to share our 'heaven on earth' with some new friends.
