WHERE WE ARE:
Our quaint, real log cabin is on a paved road on beautiful 2900 acre Gateway Mountain (see link below for Gateway Mt. pictures and info)which is conveniently located 25 miles east of Asheville and the Biltmore Estate, 7 miles off I-40 in a pristine, residential mountain preserve in Old Fort, NC.
VIEWS:
From the ridge summit there are breathtaking views of Mount Mitchell & the Black Mt. Range to the north, Lake Lure to the south, and the Piedmont to the southeast. A drive around the property on our private roads will reveal a new view at each turn --as good or better than any around, including the Blue Ridge Parkway. From the cabin decks, loft and sun porch the long range views include, to the southeast, mountains and Rutherfordton all year round, and in the winter Lake Lure to the south.
PRIVATE MOUNTAIN AMENITIES:
This exclusive private gated community has many miles of paved and unpaved roads for hiking, a small lake with large floating gazebo/dock and covered picnic area where you may swim or canoe, two smaller ponds, and a magnificent 50 ft. high natural waterfall with a nature path along the stream for easy walking and a lovely covered picnic area with grills.
CRITTERS YOU MAY SEE:
Birds and other wildlife are abundant so don't forget the binoculars and camera. Wild turkey, quail, fox, deer, bobcats, ground hogs, squirrels, raccoons, and the occasional bear can be spotted. Some of the birds that can be seen on the mountain are Cardinal, Oriole, Scarlet Tanager, Mockingbirds, Warblers, Bluebirds, Carolina wrens, Pileated Woodpeckers (aka Woody Woodpecker), Downy Woodpeckers, Hairy Woodpeckers, Indigo Bunting, Goldfinch, Pine Siskin, Cedar Waxwing, Red Crossbill, Ruby Breasted Grosbeak, Redtail Hawk, smaller hawks, Yellow bellied Sapsucker, Towhee, Thrasher, Chickadee, Titmouse, both black and brown nuthatches and ofcourse, the numerous warm weather Ruby Throated Hummingbirds, which come right up to the feeders for a closer look.
WHAT ABOUT THOSE STARS:
If you are a stargazer, be sure to bring your telescope. The viewing is spectacular on clear nights, especially in the winter -- this is as good as it gets for amateur astronomers. A 4 wheel drive vehicle is suggested in the winter.
ROMANCE ON YOUR MIND?
We have had honeymooners, many anniversaries without the kids, TWO proposals and several thoughtful souls who swept up their significant others for a surprise weekend at our mountain cabin. How about sipping cocoa while watching the sunrise on the porch, viewing the sunset from the ridge summit, falling asleep in front of the fire on the sofabed, or relaxing in our "Jacuzzi with a view". Both queen size beds have pillow top/plush type mattresses, thick quilts, and electric mattress pads in winter. In warm weather sleep with the windows open and listen to the night sounds of the forest, or you could turn on the A/C.
WHAT DOES THE CABIN HAVE:
The 2 BR 2 Bath cabin is located on a quiet and very private two acre lot which is barely visible from the road and closest neighbor. It has A/C and heat, full kitchen with dishwasher, utility room with washer and dryer and satellite TV. There are 2 decks, one of them covered. The sun porch is heated with gas logs and has floor to ceiling windows on three sides.
The Scandinavian style wood-burning fireplace is located in the living/dining/kitchen area and we provide the firewood. The master bedroom in the loft has the same lovely view and has a two person Jacuzzi with a small balcony.
The second bedroom is downstairs. One bathroom has a shower and the other has a shower/tub.
We provide coffee, tea, spices, creamer.
WHAT YOU WON'T FIND:
NOISE -- If you are seeking a quiet retreat, you've come to the right place. This is truly a relaxing and beautiful getaway. The smell of pine greets you when you enter the log cabin and follows you outdoors into the pine and hardwood forest which surrounds the entire mountain. There is practically NO TRAFFIC or other NOISE or car radios to disturb the almost total quiet. In fact, there isn't much traffic at all on the mountain. Usually the only sounds are the wind and the birds outdoors, and a crackling fire inside. How great is that!
4 WHEEL DRIVE?
We recommend a 4 wheel drive vehicle in winter. Although we have a community snowplow, the driveway is steep and sometimes doesn't melt off for a day or two when it snows.
