We stayed in the Malapua home and it was amazing, only 5min walk to the surf beach. With beautiful mountains seen from the back deck and a hot tub that was amazing after a surf, this place was perfect. The home was newly renovated and had a great feel to it. Everything was clean and new. The pool table was also great to have. We would definitely stay here again in the future. The agents that we dealt with were also very helpful and friendly.Recommended for: Girls getaway, adventure seekers, sightseeing, families with teenagers, tourists without a car, families with young children.
Owner response: Thank you for being such wonderful guests. The new owner of this home spent lots of time and energy to make it perfectly comfortable for the guests. We are so happy you enjoyed your time at Malapua. We look forward to your return visit to Hanalei!

We loved this place.Location is great and it is well equipped, and the view is lovely...would have preferred a larger deck but that did not stop us from spending many evenings on it. Only problem was the internet connection which was sporadic at best. It obviously needs new wiring. I would strongly recommend this lovely place.Did you find this review helpful? Our family of 17 stayed at the Hanalei Retreat from July 31 to August 2, 2010 to celebrate our parents (grandparents/in-laws) 60th wedding anniversary. It was a spectacular place to stay in a perfect location and offered the most wonderful setting for this once in a lifetime celebration. Working with the owner ahead of time to plan this event was a joy. The property managers were awesome hosts, offering assistance and checking on us and our hot tubs every few days. The location is perfect – the beautiful Hanalei Bay and beach is an easy 5 minute stroll, and the town center with unique shops, dining, an awesome Saturday morning market, and the most beautiful little church are an easy 5 minute stroll in the opposite direction of the beach. There was something to keep everyone busy from our 80+ year old parents to our 8 year old niece. The décor in the homes is very beautiful and captures the Hawaiian “Aloha”. The almost constant breeze and the abundance of windows and ceiling fans made the stay extremely enjoyable and comfortable. There were even a couple of nights we had to pull out our long sleeves as the evening breeze over the ocean was cool. We had expected to eat all of our dinners outside in the shared yard of the two homes, but found that the lanai in the upstairs of Malapua had plenty of room – tables and chairs -which made for more than enough space for our crew of 17 to feast. This lanai overlooks the mountains, and each meal gathering offered a variety of birds, storms, rainbows, and waterfalls for us to enjoy. The yard is filled with orchids, ginger, a banana tree, and many other lush plants, and we enjoyed our time lounging on the yard furniture. The beds in the units were all comfortable and all other amenities were in great shape and very clean! We were provided with enough beach towels for everyone, boogie boards, beach chairs, snorkeling gear and sand toys. Each of the four units had a great book on Kauai filled with information on things to do while on the island. The washer, drier and clothes line were a bonus. This is a great rental for anyone looking to get in to the Aloha spirit and enjoy this part of Kauai, which is a bit more lay back than other parts of the island. Ahh…we look forward to when we can return to paradise. Mahalo for sharing your incredible homes!Recommended for: Girls getaway, adventure seekers, sightseeing, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, tourists without a car, families with young children, age 55+.

Was here April/May 2010 for my brother-in-law's 50th birthday surprise trip. We were a party of about 30 people and my sister rented these 2 houses plus 2 other houses in the area to accommodate us all. This house was by far my FAVORITE! Next time I am in Kauai, I'm staying here again. The houses are super clean/neat and the decor is adorable. Loved the surfboard attached to the wall in the front house as the "bar". Also, even though it's a "rental by owner" there are no personal owner items there, so it feels like you are in a cute hotel and not like you are in a strange person's house. The jacuzzi was perfect each day to relax after stand-up-paddleboarding in Hanalei Bay. It was also great to have a washer/dryer there for our use plus beach chairs, snorkel gear, boogie boards and an ice chest. The house has pretty much everything you need. Just bring sunscreen and food! :) Location of house is perfect. It's a few blocks and an easy walk to town for shopping and restaurants and across the street from the beach. The beach access path is just a few houses away too. Also, if you are there on Sat. from 9am-12noon there is a Farmer's Market right around the corner near the green church w/ great local produce, goat cheese, and arts/crafts. Also, about a mile down Weke Rd there are surfboard/paddleboard/kayak rentals right near Hanalei Pier. We rented our boards for a week and the rental place stored them there for us so we didn't have to lug them back and forth to the house. The property managers were amazing - very professional and accommodating. I dealt with Brooke usually and she was always cheery, easily accessible via her cell and just plain nice! One of the keys broke off in the lock to the laundry room and they had someone there in probably less than an hour to fix it. Talk about fast! Wow! I would highly recommend this property to ANYONE, it was absolutely perfect! Other recommendations for you in town -- go see Karlos at Hanalei Pizza for some yummy salads and pizzas (you shoudl try the wild pig pizza...it's amazing), Bouchon's for sushi, Yellow Fish Trading, Divine Planet and On the Road to Hanalei for souveniers and cute gift items, Tropical Taco for breakfast burritos and tacos, the surf rental place by Hanalei Pier, Papaya's Market for organic produce, etc. (it's like a mini Whole Foods Market), Tahiti Nui for cocktails/live music and Java Kai for great coffees and smoothies. Enjoy your stay!!! I sure did! :)Recommended for: Girls getaway, adventure seekers, sightseeing, romantic getaway, families with teenagers.
