Cataumet house description
If this isn't the most perfect spot on Cape Cod, it's close. Classic summer Cape house built in 1910 on the crest of a 50 ft bluff facing southwest in exclusive Cataumet. Overlooking its own broad, private white sand beach with warm Buzzards Bay water, sandbars and steady breeze. 40 steps down the kid-safe stairway leads directly from the house to our own private beach (not shared) with no public access. Ideal for swimming and boating. Mooring is avaiable. Cocktails on the bluff at sunset anyone? The view is stunning (with or without the cocktails). The house is a very comfortable, large, original summer cottage, rustic and a bit funky. The kitchen is very functional with new appliances and fully equipped. An attached 'boat house' has ping pong and pool tables and beach equipment. Living room with fireplace, and dining area are lovely and informal. Sorry, no wedding or similar big parties allowed. And no pets allowed, please. Ideal private, family Cape in spectacular location.
Cataumet has all the delights that the upper Cape has to offer including the warmer waters of Buzzards Bay and the convenience of being just ten minutes beyond the Bourne Bridge (about 70 minutes from Boston). The Bourne area (Cataumet is a village of Bourne) has all the beauty of the outer Cape without all the traffic, tourist traps and congestion.
If you'd like to get an idea about Cataumet and neighboring towns, read 'The Big House' by Georger Colt (my father is mentioned in the book as the man who beat his father in the local tennis tournament). The book will give you an idea about the stately old homes in the area which have been owned by generations of old yankee families as well as the kind of ambiance which permeates our community. Private, quiet, beautiful large Cape 'cottages' at the end of long winding driveways. A sophisticated, friendly community of unpretentious, but well-heeled New Englanders. We're talking about 'old Cape' here.
A fabulous family spot on the beach is what it is with one caveat- there are about 40 stairs down to the beach and there is a retaining wall at the top of the stairs along the edge of the bluff. If you plan to visit with toddlers, vigilance will be needed. When our youngsters were litle, we put a folding gate (we have one there) across the top of the stairs and kept our eyes on them when they were outside and at the beach. Three generations of the owner's family have somehow survived it with the worst injury being a splinter or two.But if you are nervous about your toddler(s), there may be other properties better suited to you.
Sorry, No pets allowed means no pets allowed.
Sorry, no large parties allowed- like wedding parties.
We offer full week only Sunday to Sunday rentals during the summer.
Let's be completely clear. This is an old house, very exposed to the elements, in a spectacular place. It ain't the Ritz. If the house was in perfect condition, the rent would be way far higher. The house is closed and empty most of the year (it's not winterized). Every spring and summer painting, repairs and upgrades need to be done which the owners do mostly themselves on a tight budget (that's why we rent it!). Things get old, Things stop working well. We do our best to keep it as good as possible. We respond as quickly as possible when things need to be done. We have the house professionally cleaned. If you are fussy and demand perfection, please don't visit 'Holiday House'. If you are easy-going and want a comfortable and relaxed family vacation in a spectacular, private beachfront spot for a good relative price, now you're talking.
John Asten (Gomez of 'The Addams Family' ), Patty Duke and Lynn Redgrave have rented Holiday House in the past, and loved it. We love it as it is.

We had been looking for a place on Cape Cod to accommodate our family, two daughters with husbands (although one husband was unable to come due to work commitments) and six grandchildren ranging in age from 9 to 3 1/2. Even though the weather on the Cape can be a problem early in the season, mid June was the only time that could fit into everyone's schedule. We had some less than perfect beach days, but Holiday House is quite handy to several activities that are both attractive and educational for our age groups. Plymouth hosts several historic attractions as well as whale watching tours, Falmouth offers souvenir shopping and restaurants, and Woods Hole is home to the famous Oceanographic Institute. Holiday House, too, provided things to keep everyone happy and busy. The views from the bluff were always spectacular, regardless of the weather. The beach was just right for the children during high or low tides. It was not difficult to supervise them while they were on the beach. Holiday House exceeded our expectations. It has great rustic charm and comfortably accommodated all of us. It is well equipped and furnished (we brought way too much "stuff" with us, not knowing what to expect). We were very pleased with our experience and hope we might be able to visit there again on vacation.

Owner response: There were some sunny days during the week, but also a bit of bad luck with the weather. Mid-June is usually pretty nice, but the lower rental rates reflect that it's not always as hot as during the summer. Fortunately, there's plenty to do even when it's not sunny and hot.

My family and I have spent two wonderful summer vacations at this house. I have been renting summer homes in this area for 25 years and this is one of my favorites. The beach and view are spectacular. It would be hard to find a better beach on Buzzards Bay. Lots of sand, few rocks and very little seaweed. You will never need to leave the house. I love the feeling when you are on vacation and everything you need is right there. The house although old is extremely well cared for and very clean upon arrival. I am picky about towels, sheets and blankets and they pass the test (for a casual summer house). The neighborhood is great and you are near restaurants and my favorite fish store Cataumet fish. The kitchen is very well stocked and I love the old china cabinet with all the old plates and bowls used by the family for generations. The owners are very involved and care about your vacation running smoothly. If there is a problem they attend to it ASAP. The house is very comfortable and the boat house with the pool table and ping pong is great for all ages. The outdoor shower is amazing the view is a 10! My only warnings about the house is that because it is old there is no insulation and you can hear sounds throughout the house if people in your group get up earlier or stay up later. I fixed this by running a fan in my room and had no problem. The other warning is the beach is reached by walking down a set of stairs. It is a big set of stairs. I happen to like it because you get your exercise. This house has a lot of value for the price.Enjoy!

One of our best vacations ever. Do you remember Thompson's Clam Bar and the Patsy Cline song? This house was that and more. Well appointed, friendly neighbors, gorgeous sunsets and all of Cataumet Bay to swim in. We especially loved taking an outdoor shower in brisk wind conditions. We're going back!

My family (sisters, husbands and kid) have a little family reunion every Memorial Day Weekend. We have been to Holiday House 3 times now, but not 3 years in a row. We decided it would be good to try different places but this last year we went back to the Holiday House and decided we should go every year. It is our favorite place, without a doubt. The house has great character and and we love that it's so comfortable and unfussy. The beds are comfortable. The pool table and ping pong table keep kids busy. The kitchen is well stocked with whatever cookware you may need to make a few meals. The view is gorgeous and one of our favorite things is to just sit outside in the Adirondack chairs and have a drink by the water. There is plenty to do in the area but if you just want to relax with a good book, you can do that too. I hope to be revisiting the Holiday House for many years to come.
