A charming house in old Hawaii
A charming house in old Hawaii
We chose the Hilo (east) side of Hawaii Island for our first trip to the islands, and were fortunate to have rented Hale Hamakua for our stay. ** From Hale Hamakua, we made numerous trips into Hilo and the surrounding area to visit the Farmers' Market, swim, dine, visit the Japanese and botanical gardens; and see the waterfalls. Highlights were an Arnott's tour to the ~14,000 foot Mauna Kea summit at dusk; and a trip to Volcano National Park and dinner at Volcano House. On the Kona coast, under a crystalline blue sky, barren black lava-fields dissolve into sandy beaches populated by weathered palm and bonsai-like trees. We much preferred the lush tropical landscape of the east to the arid beauty of this, the heavily touristified western shore. ** At Hale Hamakua, orchids grow from the trunks of palm trees lining the entrance path; colorful flowers bloom everywhere. The ocean view is magnificent. We were fortunate during our stay that it rained only at night, however heavy clouds remained on the horizon, providing visual tension in the early-dawn sky. It was so easy after a day of exploring the island, to fall asleep at nightfall on the couch on the back porch! ** On more utilitarian matters: The house was spacious, light and cheerful, well-maintained, and very comfortably furnished. Ample linens and high-quality bath-towels were provided. The kitchen was well-stocked with pots and pans. The WiFi was very weak – possibly a blessing for those seeking escape from stresses of the outside world? I will highly recommend a stay at Hale Hamakua to my friends and family, and look forward to a return to this exceptional property.

Fantastic Vacation Home
Fantastic Vacation Home
The pictures and the descritption don't do the property justice. What a spectacular place. It was much larger than we expected. When you arrive, you feel like you're at home. The kitchen is very well stocked from silverware to glassware. There are plenty of linens, and the bedrooms are very roomy and comfortable, as are the beds. The views are endless. You look out any window facing the ocean and all you see is the beautiful water. We even saw whales! The grounds are perfectly manicured and you feel like you're in your own little corner of the world where no one can see you. It's 20 miles north of the city, so there is nothing immediately around you. That was exactly what we were looking for. A relatively short drive away is everything you could want, from Walmart to the Farmer's Market in the middle of Hilo (don't miss that!). It's less than an hour from the volcano and Akaka Falls is only 12 miles away. We found our little slice of paradise in Hawaii. We visited from southern California and discovered that this lovely home is reasonably priced and very welcoming. I would highly recommend it. The guest services team that takes care of the property were very helpful and made everything easy. If you're going to the Big Island, there is nowhere else I'd stay.

Very nice house
Very nice house
We had a relaxing and peaceful week in this home on the Hamakua Coast. It is an older house, but well kept. I give it four stars because nothing is perfect. But it was pretty perfect for our family and I would whole-heartedly recommend the house to others because we would absolutely stay there again. Pluses - Comfortable beds, well-stocked kitchen, wonderful view, inside open and airy with comfortable and pleasant decor, all clean and ready for our arrival, a rental agency very easy to work with, very private, great vegetation in the yard with fresh bananas and avocados, wi-fi, reasonable rates. Minuses - Dull knives and no way to sharpen them, some road noise from trucks up on the highway, a screen door in the living room that won't stay on the track, wi-fi signal pretty much limited to tv room and kitchen - otherwise gets weak by the dining table and beyond. The parking is right next to the entry door and is level. There is a step up from the tv room to the kitchen, otherwise the interior is all one level. This is something I looked for since we had my elderly mother with us. It takes about a half hour to drive into Hilo. (Don't miss the farmer's market!) I will say again that the property management company did a great job for us. This is in contrast to the company that handled our rental over in Kona where we had a 25 page rental agreement and a non-working shower among other things to contend with. For Hale Hamakua, the rental agreement is only three pages. Plus they give you vacation ideas and information to help plan your stay. And they were wonderful on the phone.

Wonderful 8 night stay.
Wonderful 8 night stay.
This was a fabulous home to stay in for our 8 night stay. We had 2 couples and 1 adult daughter with plenty of room to spread out and relax. The kitchen met our needs with all of our cooking. It was so nice to have a seperate room with the TV in it so the rest of the house could be used by other people. The house was very clean and very inviting when we arrived; and "a very Hawaii feel" with the decor. The views were fantastic, the yard very nice, quiet and private. This gave us the Hawaii experience we wanted with HIlo 20 miles away, the 50's cafe just down the road and lots of other things to keep us busy. Thanks to the owners for renting their house so others can enjoy it.
