Located in the private community of Benway Landing on the Chain, our lake front French country cottage was designed by national award winning home designer, Robert Martignoni of Building Science Associates.

Nestled in the woods on a private road, the house is built on a slope and offers views of the lake from the large great room, the master bedroom, the screened porch and the sprawling deck. The floor to ceiling windows in the great room provide plenty of light and add to the spacious feel. The stone (wood burning) fireplace is the focal point in the great room and not only warms the room but provides a romantic ambience on those cold winter nights.

The home features natural pine floors throughout with tile in bathrooms and carpet in upstairs loft. The gourmet kitchen has Jenn-Air appliances, including a gas stove with convection oven and French door style refrigerator with ice maker. The painted custom cabinets contrast the beautiful granite counter tops. There is plenty of storage and all kitchen essentials are provided including a Cuisinart blender, Kitchen Aid mixer, dishes, glasses, serving trays and cookware. The eating area seats six, with an adjoining enclosed screened porch that seats six to eight more guests.

The great room has just been updated with a 50' flat Plasma (HD) TV, a Blue Ray DVD player and a new receiver with surround sound. Direct TV satellite was just installed in January 2013.

The master bedroom has a queen size iron bed and a closet with drawers and hanging space. The adjoining master bathroom includes a granite vanity, Jacuzzi corner tub, shower and linen closet.

The guest bedroom has a full size iron bed and is right around the corner from the main bathroom which has a granite vanity and shower.

The loft upstairs has a trundle bed which consists of two twin mattresses. The mattresses can be separate or can be pushed together to form a king size bed if desired. There is a wonderful view of the lake from the loft.

The expansive outdoor deck is approximately 10' x 30'. Enjoy the quiet and serene setting gazing at the lake and surrounding wooded areas. There is a gas grill, Adirondack chairs, and a large table with umbrella which seats six to eight. Guests thoroughly enjoy drinking their morning coffee as the sun comes up on this wonderful deck.
The walk out (unfinished) basement provides additional beds (great for kids) and game area. There are two full size beds, one twin bed and a roll-a-way bed in the basement along with a pool table and foosball table.

Attention wildlife enthusiasts! The cottage is located on Benway Lake, which is among the 'Upper Chain of Lakes'. The lakes are perfect for kayaking and canoeing. Paddle through all six lakes on one trip or break this fabulous landscape into day trips. Either way, you are in for a unique kayaking or canoeing experience. We have two one-person kayaks and a canoe for your use, as well as life jackets. Enjoy wildlife such as loons, swans, ducks and turtles. Fish for bass, pike, walleye, and even trout and muskie!
There is not a sandy beach at this property, but both Lake Michigan and Torch Lake beaches are just ten minutes away.

The best northern Michigan golf courses are all a short drive: Bay Harbor, Shanty Creek, The Chief, Hawks Eye, Boyne Mountain, Boyne Highlands, A-Ga-Ming, Antrim Dells and Dunmaglas. The cottage is a great base location for golfer's who enjoy playing a different course each day. Excellent local restaurants include The Blue Pelican in Central Lake, Lulu's in Bellaire and The Rowe in Ellsworth. Classic Pizza in downtown Central Lake has great pizza and subs. And, believe it or not, the Central Lake BP gas station also has great pizza, smoked chicken and smoked ribs!

I want to thank you so very much for sharing your beloved home with our family. Your home was amazing. Every detail was so artfully done!!! And every possible kitchen tool was available for our Parisian foodies! We ate most meals on the deck over-looking the lake. The perfect blue sky and warm weather were an added bonus. We hope we left everything in the same pristine condition as we found it. My family used the canoe and 2 kayaks several times. Our 7 and 10-year old kids spent most of their free time collecting rocks and catching frogs, toads, caterpillars plus creating a natural habitat for them. Each night they let them go, and started over the next day. Also each night we had a bonfire and made marshmallow smores. Other activities included going hiking at Grass River Natural Area, raspberry picking at King's Orchard, going to an art festival in Alden, and swimming in Lake Michigan and Torch Lake. What fun!!!! If you want a quality restaurant with a French-trained chef, we recommend LuLu's in Bellaire. Thanks again for giving our family reunion a perfect setting.

This was a great house for my family of four, my 82 yo mother, and my sister and her daughter. Daily trips to Torch Lake beaches and short drives to Charlevoix. When the day was over, it was comforting coming back to such a beautiful house. Cooking dinners was easy with such a well-stocked kitchen that included plenty of counter space. The deck overlooks the lake and is very private with tall trees where my mother spent most of her time. Wasn't easy getting her off the deck and into the car at the end of the trip! Thanks again.

We had an excellent stay at your property. Very relaxing and very private. The lake was very peaceful and quite even on memorial weekend. While kayaking through the lake without a single house in sight, taking in all that nature had to offer made me feel grateful to be alive. 1st time Kayaking and it was surprisingly simple and we had a blast. You were an excellent host. The home was overstocked with virtually everything!! WE definitely put your beautiful kitchen to work and it was up to the task. We also did some 1st class BBQing! My 7 year old spent an entire day literally 12 hours fishing at the end of the dock catching tons of small perch and blue gill. The guitar by the campfire while all the stars kept watch was a wonderful touch. We went into to Charlevoix twice as it is an inviting, charming little town with lots to do and just a short drive away. We absolutely made family memories that will last a lifetime. Thank You Margaret for sharing your paradise with us. I am GRATEFUL!!!!!!

I "lucked out" securing this beautiful cottage last minute as I frantically searched for a place for my family to stay up north for a wedding. Being a nature lover and a visitor of Northern Michigan since childhood, a condo or hotel room was to only be a last resort. Although we were short on time, I managed to make good use of the available canoe. We were blessed with incredibly warm weather for the second week of October, making the color tour via canoe a much-needed gift. The owner is an absolute joy to work with. Neighbor kind and friendly. Impeccable property. "If I had a million dollars..." My only complaint is that I had to leave.

We had a wonderful stay here. The house is tastefully decorated, well-maintained and very well equiped. It is very peaceful with lovely views of the lake from the house but suitable for families with teenagers too, with the pool table in the cellar. It is great to be be able to explore with the boats in both directions on the chain of lakes. I would recommend this rental as a very pleasant place to stay.

My husband and I with our grown children enjoyed a wonderful quiet week at this cottage. However, I would hardly call it a cottage. The home is beautiful, sparkling clean and new with everything you could imagine. I loved cooking meals each night and we enjoyed eating on the cool screened porch. A real treat was the canoe and kayaks which we used daily. We also golfed almost daily on the numerous "up north" courses that are very close. I enjoyed no TV, however, our 20 something kids were dissappointed but we were able to rent and view several movies. We will definitely return.

Owner response: We are sorry we are unable to provide TV service (which is indicated in the listing). Because of the heavily wooded property, neither Dish or Direct could get a signal and there are no cable providers yet in this area. We DO have internet service and there are over fifty DVD's from which to choose for movie watching.

We rented this beautiful property as a last minute family getaway for a long weekend and our only regret was that we couldn't have stayed longer! The home was very welcoming and comfortable and literally had every amenity that you could possibly need. The owner's have thought of everything including a large selection of dvds, cds, and board games for a rainy day or evening activity. Our three children enjoyed fishing off the dock, searching for turtles and critters on the beautiful wooded property and campfires and shooting stars at night. We made good use of the kayaks and canoe and had fabulous dinners on the expansive deck overlooking the lake. Super location for day trips - close to Torch Lake, Charlevoix, and Petoskey! We are very much looking forward to returning next summer for a whole week of fun and sun!

My wife and family were looking for a comfortable home for our vacation, with waterfront access and close to many of the "Up North" villages and activities. Wow did we get more than we expected. The home was gorgeous, clean and very comfortable. I felt at home from moment I arrived. The lake is very representative of the beauty of this part of the state - the canoes and kayaks were used daily by my kids and I, as was the fire pit on the lake front (I've gained 5-10 lbs from the evening smores for 7 straight nights). Also, we were within an hour of Charleviox, Petosky, Traverse City and the Sleeping Bear Dunes, and about 2 hours from Macinaw City/Macinac Island. This was my first, and definietly not last time I'll visit Northern MI, and their cottage will be the first on our list!

The home was beautiful, perfectly amended, and EXCEPTIONALLY clean. You were so gracious and welcoming leading up to our arrival, we felt we were actually at home as soon as we arrived. The location is great, away from the crowds, peaceful, quiet, and yet close to all Northwest Michigan has to offer. Our family vacation would not have been the same without your lovely home. Thank you!

                      Owner info

                      Year Purchased: 2005

About the owner: We built our cottage in 2005 as a family retreat and future retirement home. Since our careers moved us out of state, we are unable to visit as often and decided to share it with others. We hope you love it as much as we do!

Why the Owner Chose Central Lake:
After spending many years visiting friends 'up north', we too began to fall in love with the areas natural beauty. We never thought we would find property that was on a lake (my requirement) AND had acreage (Tom's requirement). We purchased ten acres on Benway Lake in 2002 and began to build in 2003. We love the location as we feel the west side of Michigan is the most beautiful with its rolling hills, country roads, cherry and apple orchards, winery's and road side markets. We love the location and we love the house! We only wish we lived closer so we could enjoy it more. Our loss is your gain!

The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
Golf in the summer and ski in the winter! What a great location near the best golf courses and ski slopes. Agaming and Shanty Creek are just 30 minutes away; Boyne Highlands, Boyne Mountain and Bay Harbor are just 40 minutes away. Stay home and walk the woods and country roads, sit on the deck with morning coffee, cook to your hearts desire in the wonderful kitchen. You may never want to leave the relaxation of the cottage. If you do venture out, don't miss going up to the picturesque town of Charlevoix on beautiful Lake Michigan, a lovely twenty minute drive northwest. Enjoy great shopping and food including American Spoon, fudge (of course), and ice cream! Another twenty minutes from Charlevoix is beautiful Petoskey, with Harbor Springs just a bit further up along Lake Michigan into Little Traverse Bay. Heading south of Central Lake, Bellaire is just twenty minutes. You will find my favorite restaurant, Lulu's, as well as Short's Brewery for some local flavor and entertainment. Just five minutes from our place will take you right into Central Lake, situated on beautiful Intermediate Lake, where you can buy groceries, have pizza or enjoy a nice dinner at the Blue Pelican. Want to go to the beach? A short drive due west (ten minutes) takes you to Torch Lake and Grand Traverse Bay beyond (Barnes Park), where you can lay on the public beach for hours (remember, we do not have a sandy beach at our property). Do you have a special occasion in which a fine dining experience is worthy? Drive no further than Ellsworth (ten minutes) to The Rowe Inn and enjoy their unique menu. Obviously, there are plenty of places to go and things to do. Even a day trip to Mackinac Island is possible!
