The chalet was as described in the description, nestled in a quiet peacefull setting. Our family enjoyed our stay, and would highly recommend this property.

This was our second stay in what we have deemed our "home away from home"!! We arrived on 10/12/12 and stayed through 10/21/12. What an amazing 9 days. As always such a beautiful place to stay!! Feels so much like home that we really did not want to leave. The weather was absolutely beautiful and the trees were at prefection. We had some beautiful wildlife visitors while we were there - a white squirrel, raccoons and about 8 beautiful deer!! Cannot say enough about the awesome hostess Karen and her family. Always so quick to make everything perfect!! Thank you Karen and family for sharing this beautiful home with us. Hope to see you again this year!!

Words cannot describe how amazingly charming and perfect this home is as well as its owner. Karen was a great host and took care of every detail you can imagine. My family spent thanksgiving week at the chalet and it was outstanding. The convenience of having all the shops/stores less than 10 minutes away and cooking all our meals in the kitchen was great. Every item one can think of is in her home. The fireplace was just soo cozy and all the rooms are perfectly decorated. I was facinated by all the books and wonderful record collection. My husband and two dogs loved being out on the beautiful deck. Upon our arrival date, Karen was kind enough to have dinner delivered to the home as well as the heat & lights on....She is great!! There are easy rules to follow and great details about the house. We did some outstanding antique shopping to the Landrum, SC area as recommended by Karen and we were not disappointed. Thank you Karen for welcoming us into your chalet and looking forward to our next trip. Happy Holidays,

We were at this property from 8/19-24/2012 and thoroughly enjoyed it's peacefulness in the woods. Everything was there that was mentioned in the listing and all furniture was quite comfortable. (We were tempted to bring the king size bed home it was so comfortable!) Layout of home was very well thought out, allowing the guests to enjoy the mountain air and woods off of the deck. We enjoyed a few meals on the deck which was very relaxing! The property was clean and well-maintained. Karen is very easy to work with and responded to emailed questions usually within the hour or less. We visited Chimney Rock (amazing view!), Hendersonville, Carl Sandbergs home ( enjoyed this more than we thought we would! Highly recommend it to others), and we also did a nature walk at a place right there in Columbus. It was a bit overgrown and both of us got biten by mosquitos so wear some repellants if you go. Saw some interesting flowers, mushrooms, and wildlife. Would highly recommend this listing as it is central to touristy locations which you then return to your "home away from home". Thanks Karen!! We'll be back!

Karen was so kind and thoughtful before our trip even got started. She emailed complete details about how to get to the chalet, how to get in and helpful information about places to eat and shop as well as a Farmer's Market to check out. The property is just beautiful and while there is another home on the same road, it truly feels like you are all alone on a mountain. The location is great. It's in the middle of a very quaint town and centrally located to a highway entrance. The home is very comfortable and tidy. It feels very much like you are in a home which I found to be a nice change from condos that we have stayed in. The deck has great seating so that you can enjoy looking out into the trees or having a peaceful cup of coffee. There are TONS of great books to read. The kitchen is a tad small but did have all that I needed to cook (and more!). My father and his wife joined the 6 of us for a few days and there was ample space for everyone. The loft is more of a suite but is still without a door to close, so privacy should not be assumed. All beds were very comfortable. Karen checked in via email a couple of times to make sure that all was going well and that we had what we needed. I aqppreciated her follow-up very much. I highly recommend this area if you choose to check out Ashville, North Carolina and/or waterfalls. Columbus is just close enough and just far away enough - if that makes sense! More than that though, I highly recommend staying at the Pine Shadows Chalet. It truly has all the comforts of home with the hospitality of a real person. This home is beautiful and my children had such a great time exploring the grounds and wildlife - my daughter delighted in a large lizzard and we got to see a white squirrel! When we get back to North Carolina, we hope the timing works out just right to revisit our home away - Pine Shadows Chalet.

My month-long stay at Pine Shadows late last summer was one of the best experiences of my life. The house has a spacious, open plan; a splendid long deck overlooking the wooded hillside; and a kitchen that is easy to use and enjoy. My intended writing retreat turned into a combination of reading, writing, and exploring the foothills, mountains, and charming small towns of the Western Carolinas. Convenient to interstate highways yet tucked away in a river valley between small mountains, the house was exactly right for a relaxing long stay. My sister and her husband in far-away Ohio could sense my enjoyment, and decided to join me for a mini-reunion weekend. We went to Asheville for some sightseeing and dining, and they went on to Tennessee for a music tour. Other favorite places nearby include Tryon (charming streets, great dining treats), Saluda via the old road which makes it a lovely drive to the higher elevation, and the Carl Sandburg estate and goat farm near Hendersonville. Confirmed outdoor types will like the many opportunities for hikes, great scenery, and other rugged adventures available in the area, too. Owners of this home are helpful and friendly.

Pine Shadows is a well maintained home situated in a peaceful and tranquil location offering solitude, yet only a few minutes from the local amenities - supermarkets, restaurants, gas station etc. The home was clean and comfortably furnished, with everything you could need to make this a home from home. The relaxing atmosphere of just sitting out on the deck, overlooking the wooded area made it difficult to actually want to go out for the day. The location of the home means that it is possible to make several sightseeing trips without having to drive the same route to and from it every day. It is an area that provides numerous opportunities to explore the nature in all its splendor. Karen was very patient and responded to our numerous questions with prompt and informative replies, and helping us with useful tips for our journey from Orlando. Being on holiday from the UK and having only limited knowledge of the area this was very much appreciated and proved most useful to us.

Our one month spring in the mountains was everything described, and more. We brought our Golden Retriever for a lengthy visit to the Chalet while we looked for a retirement home in this area. The location is ideal for easy access to the many attractions of Asheville, as well as to the solitude of hiking trails , private wineries and antique shops of the Columbus/Tryon/Saluda areas. Even so, we chose to just sit on the deck and admire the amazing views of spring awakening on several of our days. The property was very clean and well maintained. I had more spices and herbs to cook with than in my own kitchen back home. This kitchen makes home cooking fun! The king bed is very comfortable, as are the couches and chairs. We had two bedrooms we did not even use. Very spacious. The huge fireplace and vast music selection made even the rainy days an adventure. I have already recommended this property to my sisters, and friends back home in Iowa. I would recommend buying a Waterfalls Map, and taking in just as many as you possibly can. Karen has boxes of information on most all other attractions and restaurants in the area.

Gateway to heaven. The Chalet is a peaceful and tranquil home that is secluded, yet only a few miles away is a small town with all the amenities that you would need. The location is close to historic settings, shopping and scenic tours. The photos on the listing only display a fraction of the beauty of the well-appointed home and grounds. We watched the sunset from the deck and a great view of the woods and the mountains. Our little dog loved taking in the sun through the patio doors. The attached garage was definitely a plus. We had some rain during our stay and it made loading and unloading uneventful. Karen, our hostess, was accommodating and attentive. She promptly responded to any inquiry or concern. We didn't see any deer, but we saw a white (albino) squirrel. You will not be disappointed with this rental.

                                      Year Purchased: 2003

About: Our family rented a variety of homes in the mountains of western NC over the years. We loved staying in vacation rentals, so when we found Pine Shadows Chalet and fell in love with it in 2003, we took the plunge into second home ownership. After a year we decided to share our wonderful vacation home with other families. It has worked out fabulously, and the people who have stayed have been top-notch! For twenty years, I was professor of fine arts and humanities at Florida State College in Jacksonville, FL. My spouse is a retired journalist of The Associated Press and has recently published his first novel. So the chalet has a full library of books and music and is decorated with an artist's touch. Come enjoy our wonderful place.

                                      Why Asheville:
We keep our beautiful home well-maintained, updated, and guest-friendly. Your great experience visiting Pine Shadows Chalet is our top concern. Our guests -- some of whom return year after year -- say it best in their reviews. Please view them.

The Unique Benefits at this Cabin:
We instantly loved Pine Shadows Chalet because of its surrounding pastoral beauty. We liked that the home was at the top of a private road and off the beaten track yet in close proximity to the attractions and shopping in Hendersonville and Asheville. The house was custom-built in 1981 with a 25' apex in the living room at the top of the 5000-brick fireplace. We loved the many angles of the walls and roof lines, the interior brick walls, the natural oak doors, and the many upgrades too numerous to list. We were instantly drawn to the gorgeous westerly view from the living room-dining room, all the natural light, and the 'good karma' of the chalet. The owner/builders lived at Pine Shadows Chalet from 1981 - 2003. We are the home's lucky second owners.
