This is truly a mountain getaway. The road turns to gravel on the way there and you are really up in the mountains with privacy, beautiful mountain views, and fresh air. The meadow right outside the house is pretty and provides a relaxing place to walk/hike. It was not that far from Boulder and perfect for the mountain vacation we were looking for. It is also close to Nederland, a neat little town, and only about an hour from Estes Park. Bill is a very nice guy and worked hard to make our stay enjoyable. The house itself has a nice layout and was clean upon arrival. The pictures online of the inside of the house are a bit dated, but the outdoor pictures accurately reflect the scenery. The views are incredible and you can see tons of stars at night. Very relaxing place to sit outside, although the temperature swings a lot throughout the day, The master bedroom is a loft and therefore has no door. The other bedrooms have double beds and are on the main level. The decor is a bit dated, but personal to the owner, which is fine. It is a full time residence that is only rented out a few times a year. I probably would not call the house contemporary as I think of how the word is normally used, with the exception of the master bathroom shower and the remote controlled skylights, which were cool. It is more of a mountain house. We did not use the hot tub or sauna. We had a unique situation in that we had toddlers who were just starting to walk/run everywhere. While the owner is kid friendly, the house is not the best for young mobile children. There is a stone fireplace, open staircases, lots of books/bookshelves, and of course other personal furnishings. We had to watch our kids very closely. That said, we did not have any problems at all. If you are looking for a relaxing house in the mountains, this is it. If you are looking for a new, sheek vacation house, this may not be it. Overall, we enjoyed our stay and had a good time reconnecting with great friends.

Sugarloaf Retreat was just right for our family get-together, celebrating our mother’s 82nd birthday. Not everyone stayed each night (we have family in town), but each of us stayed at least one night. The “musical pallets” were comfortable & worked well. On long walks through the lovely forest meadow, we enjoyed observing Colorado’s alpine plants, and on long evenings we enjoyed identifying stars in the Colorado skies. Thanks also for making us as comfortable and welcome in your well appointed kitchen. We had a wonderful stay!! Best wishes from the Lindsays, the Stoffels, the Perrys, the Standifers, and Cherilyn.

We came for graduation at CU and thought we were "settling" as we were too late to stay closer to town. It turned out to be the perfect compliment to a busy and crowded downtown and campus. What a treat to come back to the peaceful mountain and watch the weather change. So hot we burned our posteriors at graduation on Thursday and then we hot-tubbed in the snow on Friday with peeks at the high mountains when the clouds allowed. Glorious! One caution, don't try to use GPS with the address, we had a scenic detour trying to find it. The printed directions get you there just fine. Also, ask for the extra pots and pans if you like to cook (our family includes several cooks and a professional chef so we like to cook for ourselves with local ingredients). It worked out just fine. The meadow is lovely and we think we saw a juvenile bald eagle one morning. The only thing we looked for and didn't find at the house: a bird guide. Now we have to figure out an excuse to come back......

Spending an August weekend at Sugarloaf Retreat in the Rocky Mountains above Boulder was one of the highlights of our family’s wonderful western vacation during which our family (Diane, Steve and our 5-year-old daughter, Cassandra) motored from San Francisco throughout the western states and back to the Bay. Sugarloaf Retreat is a gorgeous private home in a perfect, secluded location, so comfortable, with a magnificent view of the mountains (including a view of THE Continental Divide!), hot tub, fantastic kitchen (where we spent a great deal of time), many well-placed skylights, private forest trail (!) and only a short and beautiful drive to Boulder. The photos can't even do it justice. We especially enjoyed 70° temperatures with balmy breezes and pleasant sleeping 50° nights on Sugarloaf Mountain, 8,200+ feet above sea level, while everywhere else in the west was sweltering. We did not want to leave. The Peak-to-Peak highway was a spectacular drive. 40 miles north, Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National Park proved to be great hiking spots. Our daughter, Cassandra, most enjoyed the Carousel of Happiness Merry-Go-Round in the one-traffic light town of Nederland, just a few miles away -- we were persuaded to visit more than once! We thank the owner, Bill, for providing the opportunity for us to stay at Sugarloaf Retreat. He went out of his way to accommodate our limited itinerary and was so considerate and concerned for our happiness during our visit. We'll be back! Diane, Steve and Cassandra San Francisco

Thank you for allowing me to stay in your lovely Rocky Mountain home. This is a wonderful place. I had the whole house all to myself, at less cost than a hotel suite. For more than 30 years, ever since I was a 14-year-old kid, I dreamed of sleeping under the stars in the night sky of the Rocky Mountains. I was finally able to do so, if only for a long weekend. But I will be back! The three big skylights in the master bedroom did the trick. I saw so many stars, and even airplanes, that I could hardly sleep. You gave a long-awaited gift to a 44-year-old kid. Thanks for helping this little boy live his dream.

We loved staying at Sugarloaf Retreat. The house is beautifully situated and exactly as described in terms of amenities and space (although photos of kitchen & bedroom could perhaps be updated, to reflect the improvements that have been made; they look even better in person). We made good use of the decks, hot tub, charcoal grill, cable/internet, fitness equipment, washer/dryer, dishwasher. The great room was fantastic for lounging, the master bed/bath was very comfortable - loved the skylights over the bed and the walk in shower. The scenery is breathtaking -- the mountain views from the house and decks, the huge gorgeous meadow, the drive up Sugarloaf Mtn Rd and along the Peak to Peak Hway were all highlights. We visited during a heatwave, but it felt about 20 degrees cooler in the mountains than in downtown Boulder. Bill was an extremely gracious host, helpful and accommodating. He provided lots of information before and during our visit, and quickly addressed the one problem that arose (which was strictly weather related - a thunderstorm knocked out internet access for a day). The only thing wrong with the trip was that it lasted for just a week!

Magnificant Mountain and Meadow Views and Pleasant Owner. Our family enjoyed staying in this lovely private residence -- Sugarloaf Retreat on Sugarloaf Mountain above Boulder, Colorado -- viewing the Continental Divide out the two-story front windows. The views of the snow-capped mountains in the early morn from the master bed were magnificent! We all took many photo-memories from both cedar decks. Bill is a very accommodating host, making sure that we had everything we needed for a perfect visit. Our family loved exploring the private meadow paths - a do-not-miss experience - sadly, we are about to take our last walk back to the beautiful and secluded meadow just out the back door. We want to thank the owner for going out of his way to make this a memorable family vacation

The stay was better then advertised. Unbelieveable meadow and hiking yards from the back door, seeing herds of elk, and deer. The front of house has wonderful views of the Continental Divide with its snow peak mountains. The location is perfect allowing for a short drive to get into town, or drive to the Rocky Mountain National Park. Fishing, horseback riding, along with sightseeing all within 30 minutes of the house. House is secluded with great privacy and a cozy feeling of a friends home.. Was better then advertised, and higly recommended. Our family will be looking forward to a return visit.
