Monterey cabin description
Located in beautiful Highland County, Virginia nestled in a grove of sugar maples between Back Creek and Little Mountain. Wake up to valley views which are likely to include deer grazing in the meadow, hummingbirds at the feeder, or a Bald eagle or great blue heron fishing along the creek. This 28 acre property includes a sunny meadow with beautiful mountain views, picnic table by the creek and a mountain to climb!
The tastefully decorated cabin includes a master bedroom with queen bed, a second bedroom with two twin beds, one bathroom with laundry, a fully equipped kitchen, open living/dining area with cozy wood stove, a covered porch and a deck with hot tub and outdoor dining area with a gas grill. At the Cabin on Back Creek, you can enjoy the stars which light up the night sky, bird-watching, walking, or just relaxing with a book in the hammock, on the porch, or on the deck. In the early spring, we make maple syrup at the sugar house located adjacent to the Cabin. You are invited to watch (and smell!) the process of turning 40 gallons of sugar water into a gallon of pure maple syrup - or you can help us if you would like!
There are a variety of hunting and fishing opportunities nearby, and access to the George Washington National Forest is just two miles down the road.
The Cabin is located 16 miles from the quaint town of Monterey. Walking tours, galleries and shops, restaurants, beautiful mountain views, and friendly people make Highland County special all year round. Throughout the year, Monterey hosts numerous special events, the largest of which is the Highland County Maple Festival in March.
Located about 30 miles from Snowshoe Ski Resort, skiing, snowboard and tubing are available in season. Also nearby is the narrow-gauge railroad at Cass, West Virginia and the National Radio Observatory at Green Bank, WV.
Twenty miles south of the Cabin on Back Creek in neighboring Bath County are the towns of Warm Springs and Hot Springs, home to the historic Homestead resort and the Jefferson Pools mineral baths. These neighboring towns offer fine dining, golf, skiing/snowboarding, shopping, antiquing, chamber music at Garth Newel and a variety of art galleries.
The Cabin on Back Creek offers a peaceful retreat, surrounded by a variety of recreational opportunities.

We'll be back!
We'll be back!
We enjoyed our anniversary stay at backcreek cabin this October. Pat and Valerie are wonderful owners. Valerie gave us a maple syrup sampling, very enjoyable learning how the syrup is made and the different grades. Deer feeding of the morning in the meadow will be a memorable experience. We drove our Honda, so the roads are very good.

R&R at it's BEST!
R&R at it's BEST!
"Perfect" is a word that seems to sell "The Cabin" short in many ways. This was our 4th visit to Back Creek and it was outstanding. Comfortable, quiet and relaxing -the sound of the creek and a slight breeze as we sat by the fire pit each evening. Sun rising over the mountain and setting across the field -what a picture. Pat and Valerie have made certain that you have all the comforts of home. Bolar, The Homestead, and the town are great places to visit but we were always happy to get back to the cabin. There are times when I just stared at the old "Sugar House" and imagined the fires burning back in the day, and then moved to the new version for an updated feel. This property is top notch and it is one of our favorite places to spend time together. You can fish, hike etc, but for us it is a chance to recharge our batteries and just chill. Thanks to the Lowry's for keeping "The Cabin" in such great shape and for adding new surprises each year. We will return!

Leaving Is the Hard Part
Leaving Is the Hard Part
This was our second visit and it won't be our last. It's impossible to get too much of this good thing. The scenery is breathtaking, the folks are friendly and hidden treasures abound. Pat and Valerie are superb hosts, with much knowledge to share about the area. Their cabin is located right on a creek where fossils are plentiful. Deer are seen in the adjacent field. We think we heard a bear crashing through the trees on the mountainside that forms the backdrop to this property. We'll be back in late February when Pat and Valerie make syrup from the maple trees right outside the cabin. (We'll try to stay out of the way, although we make no promises.) We think well-rounded people should see first-hand how this is done. There are many things to be thankful for in life and the Cabin on Back Creek is one of them. We are grateful for this experience and we look forward to our next.

About the owner: Pat has lived on Back Creek his entire life and has been making maple syrup since he was eight years old. Living in Highland County has taught him to literally 'live off the land'. Pat built the Cabin himself, his wife, Valerie did the decorating.
Why the Owner Chose Monterey:
After purchasing 'the sugarbush' to make maple syrup from the trees located there, we decided to share this little piece of heaven with other people.
