Log Home on 150 Acres with Stream - Historic Elkhorn House
- Minimum stay:2 nights
- Internet:No
- Pets allowed:Yes
- Wheel chair accessible:No
Beautiful secluded mountain property located in private valley. 7300 feet elevation. Property has large grass hay meadow and Elkhorn stream running through property. Beavers, deer, elk, mountain lions, bears, lynx, etc can be viewed. (Don't worry the mountain lion and bear are very rare to see and will run away from you) You will have a very private access to over 800 acres. Fully equipped kitchen, wrap around deck for relaxing, go for a hike, read a book, ect.
You can drive about 20 minutes to Red Feather Lakes for fishing, antiques, restaurants. 30 minute drive down to Poudre River with access to more fishing, restaurants, rafting and more. Remains of Historic 1870 Elkhorn House Hotel, stage station, post office on property.
The Poudre river is about 12 miles away. The rafting companies operate out of north Fort Collins, which is about 35-40 minutes from the cabin. You can look at coloradodirectory dot com/rafting to find the different rafting companies.
Mishawaka is about 1 hour away.
There are 2 ways to get there, drive down the mtn and back up Poudre canyon, or go down to the Poudre and drive down to Mish.
Driving Directions: (Google maps is closest, but all the map sites are not reliable so here are the real directions to get there)
Go North from Fort Collins on Hwy 287, turn West on Hwy 74E towards Red Feather. Go 16 miles. You will go past Glacier View Meadows on the way. Watch for their entrance gates signs as you go, there will be numbers on them. You will see 'gate' 8, 9, 10, ect.
After 'gate' 12, slow down and you will see a fairly large sign on the south side of the road that says 'North Rim Road'. It is just at the mile post 16 sign. If you miss this and go too far, you will be at the 'Boy Scout road' just a 1/4 mile past it.
Turn on North Rim Road, which will head mostly south for 1 mile and then make a large turn to the West. Go another 1 mile. You will see that the main road turns South at a T intersection. There is a locked gate at this point. Don't go that way, instead continue west on Elkhorn House Rd. Just 1/8 mile the road will make a turn North and go up a large hill (Deep Cut Rd). At the point that the road turns you will see the entrance on your left to our property (155 Elkhorn House Rd). Continue down our road/driveway down alongside the meadow, and as you go past the loafing shed, look uphill to your right and you will the the house. Just follow the road and you are there!
Horse riding is about 3 miles away.
This is one of the finest mountain properties in the area. It is closer to Fort Collins than Red Feather. Only 2 miles off paved highway.

Staying here has become an annual tradition for us, and we hope to continue it. The quiet solitude and expansive views renew our spirits and get the new year started off perfectly. After a long hike or just a slow stroll in the meadow, coming home to the warm cabin is the perfect ending to the day. Thanks for having us again.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, families with teenagers, girls getaway, families with young children, pet owners, age 55+.

Six gal pals since elementary thru high school Class of 84, thought this cabin was awesome. Just as expected from pictures and description on VRBO. This cabin has so much character you must see it to appreciate it. The property was beautiful. Sitting out on the deck with the humming birds, the views, and fresh mountain air was very relaxing. The walk around the old hotel area was worth getting to the hammock waiting for us! The kitchen was big enough for all the cooks. Plenty of room for games around the table. Movie nights were a real treat as the new flatscreen, blue ray dvd set up was perfect! (closed caption for those like me who need them). Plenty of beds for everyone. Easy drive into Red Feathers for fishing and hiking. Owner Robert was very informative and helpful. Definately take his warning regarding the steep road and low clearance up to the cabin seriously (glad I didn't drive my car which is AWD but low clearance). Great set up for families, all girls, all guys weekend. We all six agreed that we would recommend to our friends and family that enjoy the outdoors, but want to sleep indoors to come stay at the Historic Elkhorn House.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, families with teenagers, girls getaway, adventure seekers, families with young children, pet owners, age 55+.

A Great Retreat

Our daughter-in-law graduated from Colorado State University in Fort Collins. Both families attended the event so we needed to secure accomodations besides their home. We planned on visiting for several days so had time to see something of Colorado other than the plains around the airport and the inside of a hotel room. The Elkhorn House was 45-60 minutes away from town but with mid-day and evening events, the distance was not an issue. Besides, waking up with a mountain / valley/ water view is worth the miles. The facility was very clean, well supplied with essentials if you forgot an item, clean dishes, fresh beds, large rooms, well heated, wood stove, good water. The cabin is accessible from the front w/o steps or the side with steps, or the lower level with more steps. Four doors, exited to a balcony or porch, the front and lower doors did not. The beds and furniture were very comfortable. The kitchen area was well planned. The hot water was hot. A washer and dryer were available if needed. Lots of books and board games were in various locations. There is a TV for movies only. Satellites are on the grounds but not activated. If you are in the place, don't waste your time on TV - get outside. Since this cabin is frequently vacant, a list of directions to follow upon arrival are provided. They were simple and easily understood - how to turn on the well water, how to turn on the hot water, how to operate the wood stove, what to do with your trash, what to do when you leave, etc. The roads are in good shape. I drove to the parking area with a rental car. Take your time going over the two humps by the cabin. There is no bathroom on the main level, 1 up and 1 down, so that may be an issue for a handicapped person. You can see 4 other cabins from the house, but that was not an issue for us. The Elkhorn is the last house on the road so you should not have anyone driving by - private. Be sure to read the history of the Elkhorn House. It will answer lots of your questions. We met the owner about the time we were departing. he was there to prepare the facilit for the next guest - sheets, towels, etc. We visited for awhile. He was freindly, courteous and professional. Our family will definitely consider the Elkhorn House for our next gathering in the Fort Collins area.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, families with young children, age 55+.

This is the second time we've stayed at the Elkhorn House and hope it won't be our last! What a great and secluded and quiet place to escape and re-generate for the New Year! Views from the deck, long hikes on the property and surrounding National Forest, and cozy nights by the fire are just a few of the basic amenities you'll find at the Elkhorn House. It's a great place for a family reunion or just a romantic getaway. You'll love it!Recommended for: Romantic getaway, families with teenagers, girls getaway, adventure seekers, sightseeing, families with young children, pet owners, age 55+.

We were wanting seclusion and that's exactly what we got!! We loved the privacy, the views, the hiking and the wildlife!! We enjoyed so much getting to sit out on the deck and enjoy the spectacular views of God's creation and to get to hear the stream rolling through the property!! We unfortunately had to cut our time there short due to a family emergency; however, Robert was extremely understandable and generous about our quick leave. Would love to come back again!!Recommended for: Romantic getaway, adventure seekers, pet owners, age 55+.

Hi Guys, The cabin went for $750.00 at the Auction Sunday. It was purchased by Marilyn , our church bookkeeper. She is beyond excited. Thank you so much for your support. The high school youth are going to New Orleans to work on homes damaged by the floods. This is a new location for the group. They are working with a Presbyterian church that has organized volunteer work crews. A tax letter will soon follow. Love you guys, SharonDid you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

Robert, I wanted to thank you for the use of your cabin last weekend. I really enjoyed learning about the Elkhorn Cabin from your print out. We saw a large eagle near your home and of course lots of deer. Thank you for the experience I can see that you have put a lot of work into your home.Did you find this review helpful? We had the pleasure of spending 3 nights at the Unfug cabin. It was truly beautiful and relaxing, a private paradise. Especially liked the porch overlooking the valley. Don't miss reading the owners research into the history of the property, fascinating. Would definitely recommend!Recommended for: Romantic getaway, families with teenagers, adventure seekers.

My husband and I recently spent a week at this cabn. It is a beautiful log home with all the modern amenities (including dishwasher and washer & dryer). The porch is a great place to sip coffee in the morning or a glass of cabernet in the evening. During our stay, we saw deer, elk, and several types of birds. It has wonderful hiking opportunites. The remains of a historiIc hotel are just across the creek and worth exploring for anyone interested in the history of this area. The community of Red Feather is about a 10 minute drive away and has a grocery store and restaurant. I highly recommend this property if you are looking for a "get away" vacation. We enjoyed our stay and look forward to visiting again soon.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, families with teenagers, girls getaway, adventure seekers, sightseeing.

Why the Owner Chose Livermore:
This is a working mountain ranch property with grass hay fields. It is a close get away for my family on weekends. It truly is one of the finest mountain properties in the area with stream, meadow, mountains, and complete privacy.
The Unique Benefits at this Lodge:
Very private with access to over 800 acres. Beautiful setting, closer to Fort Collins than most properties in the area. Very relaxing.
Property is 2 miles off paved highway on well maintained road. Driveway is kind of steep but ok for higher clearance 2 wheel drive vehicles. Low clearance vehicles not recommended. 4 wheel drive highly recommended in winter time if snow is present.
